Pattern Note

The shawl begins with a garter stitch tab; stitches are picked up along the left side and cast-on edges of this tab to create stitches for the shawl. When the shawl is complete, stitches are cast on for the border, and the border is attached to the shawl on wrong-side rows by knitting 1 border stitch together with 1 shawl stitch.

Pick-up row (RS): K3, rotate work a quarter turn to the right; pick up and knit 5 sts along left side edge (1 st in each space between garter ridges); rotate work a quarter turn to the right again; pick up and knit 3 sts across cast-on edge—11 sts.

Body

Set-up row (WS): K3, p5, k3.

Row 1: K3, pm, work Shawl pat to last 3 sts, pm, k3.

Continuing to work first and last 3 sts of every row in garter st as established, work Shawl pat [Rows 2-32] once, then rep [Rows 17-32] 4 times, then work [Rows 97-102] once.

Inc row (RS): K3, sm, [k52, yo] 5 times, sm, k3; using backward-loop cast-on, cast on 7 sts for edging—278 sts.
