Knitted scarf with fringe pattern

Scarf knitting pattern

One size: 18 cm/7" widex 165 cm/65" long including fringe

Yarn: Augustbird Bowerbird (DK/light worsted weight; 100% ethical superfine merino; 236 m/258 yds per 100 g skein)

Shade: Beyond the Teapot; 2 skeins

Gauge: 18 sts &20 rows = 10 cm/4" over cross-stitch pattern after blocking

Needles: 5.5 mm/US 9 knitting needles

Always use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

Notes: Worked end-to-end, scarf is knitted fiat with a neat slipped-stitch edging and garter borders. The plush tassels are added after blocking, using a very simple looping technique.

Working the Cross-stitch pattern: after returning stitches to the left-hand needle, it is possible simply to knit stitch 3, then stitch 4, then stitches 1 and 2, without previously lifting and changing the order of the stitches.

Stitch Glossary

w2p (wrap 2 purl): Purl next stitch, wrapping yarn twice around needle.

R4C (Right 4 Cross): Slip 4 stitches purlwise, allowing the extra loops to drop. Return stitches to left-hand needle. Lift stitches 3 and 4 over stitches 1 and 2, bringing to front of left-hand needle. K4 (knitting stitches 3 and 4 first).

PATTERN BEGINS

Using the long-tail method, cast on 36 sts.

Row 1 (RS): Sl 1 pwise wyif, k to end.

Row 2 (WS): Sl 1 pwise wyif, k to end.

Rows 3-7: Rep rows 1-2 twice more, then rep row 1 only once more.

Commence Cross-stitch pattern:

Row 9 (RS): Sl 1 pwise wyif, k3, [R4C] to last 4 sts, k4.

Rep rows 8-9 until piece measures approx. 150 cm/59" from cast-on edge, ending with a RS Row.

Next row: Sll pwise wyif, k to end.

Rep last row a further 3 times.

Cast off using the following stretchy method: *K2tog tbl, return st to LH needle; rep from * until all sts are cast off.

FINISHING

Weave in ends and block to measurements.

For the fringe:

Note: Tassels will use approx. 130 m (143 yds) of yarn. Cut lengths of yarn 41 cm (16") long, in groups of 16 strands and make a total of 16 groups. Loop a bundle of 15 strands through the openings at each end of the scarf immediately after the garter stitch edgings and use the 16th strand to tie off the tassel in place on theWS of the scarf. Add eight tassels to each end of the scarf, and then trim edges neatly.
