Tiverton Tweed by Classic Elite Yarns, 1 3/4oz/50g hanks, each approx 98yd/89m (alpaca/wool/viscose)

12 (12, 13, 14, 16, 17) hanks in #2036 lion's mane

One pair each sizes 4 and 7 (3.5 and 4.5mm) needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

One size 4 (3.5mm) circular needle, 24"/60cm long

One set (4) size 7 (4.5mm) double-pointed needles (dpn)

FISHERMAN'S RIB PATTERN

(over an even number of sts)

Row 1 (WS) Purl.

Row 2 (RS) *P1, k1B (k1 st in the row below the next st on needle); rep from *, end p2.

Rep row 2 for fisherman's rib pattern.

NOTE

The front pockets are worked as patch pockets from the ribbed top edge to the lower edge, then left on hold on the dpn. They are then joined to the body front edge above the rib as described in the instructions to "lock in" their placement.

BACK

With smaller needles, cast on 78 (84, 90, 96, 102, 108) sts.

Row 1 (WS) Purl.

Then rep row 2 of the fisherman's rib pat until piece measures 3"/7.5cm from beg. Change to larger needles.

Next inc row (RS) Knit, inc'ing 16 sts evenly spaced - 94 (100, 106, 112, 118, 124) sts.

Next row (WS) Knit.**

Then, beg with a knit row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 10 1/2"/26.5cm from beg.

Inc row (RS) K1, kfb, k to last 3 sts, kfb, k2.

Rep inc row every 16th row 3 times more—102 (108, 114, 120, 126, 132) sts.

Work even until piece measures 16"/40.5cm from beg.

Shape raglan armhole

Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec row 1 (RS) [K1, p1] 3 times, k2tog, k to the last 8 sts, SKP, [p1, k1] 3 times.

Dec row 2 (WS) [P1, k1) 3 times, p2tog tbl, p to the last 8 sts, p2tog, [k1, p1] 3 times.

Rep the last 2 dec rows twice more—80 (86, 92, 98, 104, 110) sts. Then working the WS rows even, rep dec row 1 on the next 20 (20, 22, 24, 26, 28) RS rows—40 (46, 48, 50, 52, 54) sts. Then, work dec rows 1 and 2 on the next 10 (12, 12, 12, 14, 14)rows. Sl 20 (22, 24, 26, 24, 26) sts to a st holder.

FRONT

Work same as for back up to **. Leave the 94 (100, 106, 112, 118, 124) sts on hold.

POCKETS (make 2)

Beg at the top edge, with smaller needles cast on 28 sts. Beg with a WS purl row, work in fisherman's rib pat for 2"/5cm.

Next row (RS) Knit, inc 1 st each side of row - 30 sts. Change to larger dpn and knit 1 row on the WS for the ridge. Then, beg with a k row, work in St st for 30 rows more. Cut yarn and leave the sts on hold on the dpn. Work a 2nd pocket in same way. Return to the sts on hold for the body front.

Next row (RS) Knit.

Then to "lock in" the pockets in place, work as foll:

Next joining row (WS) P3 (5, 8, 8, 11, 11), *with sts from one pocket held behind the working front sts so that the knit side of the pocket is held against the RS of the working front (that is, when the pocket is joined, the knit side will flip up and be shown on top of the knit side of the front), p1 st from the dpn pocket sts tog with 1 st from the working needle*; rep between *'s 29 times more, then p the center 28 (30, 30, 36, 36, 42) sts; rep between *'s 30 times to join the 2nd pocket, p3 (5, 8, 8, 11, 11).

The pockets are now joined at the base and will hang in place on the front until the front is completed. Then, the side edges of the pockets will be seamed to the front. Cont to work front as for back, working inc row at 10 1/2"/26.5cm from beg, then every 16th row 3 times more—102 (108, 114, 120, 126, 132)sts. Work even until piece measures 16"/40.5cm from beg.

Shape raglan armhole

Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Work dec rows 1 and 2 as on back on the next 6 rows—80 (86, 92, 98, 104, 110) sts. Then, working the WS row even, rep dec row 1 on the next 10 (11, 13, 15, 17, 19) RS rows.

Work 1 WS row even.

Then, work dec rows 1 and 2 on the next 15 (15, 15, 15, 17, 17) rows—30 (34, 36, 38, 36, 38) sts.

Shape neck

Next row (RS) Work 12 sts, join a 2nd ball of yarn and work center 6 (10, 12, 14, 12, 14) sts, and sl to a st holder, bind off 2 sts at work to end.

Working both sides at once, bind off 2 sts on next WS row from the other neck edge, then dec 1 st from each neck edge every row 4 times. Sl the 6 sts each side to st holders.

LEFT SLEEVE

With smaller needles, cast on 44 (46, 48, 52, 56, 60) sts.

Row 1 (WS) Purl.

Then, rep row 2 of the fisherman's rib pat until piece measures 3"/7.5cm from beg. Change to larger needles.

Next inc row (RS) Knit, inc'ing 2 (2, 4, 4, 6, 6) sts evenly spaced—46 (48, 52, 56, 62, 66) sts.

Next row (WS) Knit.

Then, beg with a knit row, work in St st for 6 rows.

Inc row (RS) K1, kfb, k to last 3 sts, kfb, k2.

Rep inc row every 6th row 13 times more—74 (76, 80, 84, 90, 94) sts. Work even until piece measures 18"/45.5cm from beg.

Shape raglan cap

Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec row 1 (RS) [K1, p1] 3 times, k2tog, k to the last 8 sts, SKP, [p1, k1] 3 times.

Dec row 2 (WS) [P1, k1] 3 times, p2tog tbl, p to the last 8 sts, p2tog, [k1, p1] 3 times.

Rep the last 2 dec rows once more—56 (58, 62, 66, 72, 76) sts. Then, working the WS rows even, rep dec row 1 on the next 11 (12, 14, 16, 19, 21) RS rows. Then work dec row 1 every 4th row 5 times—24 sts. Work 2 rows even.

Shape top of cap

Bind off 8 sts at beg of next WS row, bind off 4 sts at beg of next WS row, 2 sts at beg of next 2 WS rows AT THE SAME TIME, dec 1 st as for previous dec's once more - 7 sts.

Next row (RS) With the 7 sts on needle, rib 7 sts, then pick up and k 18 sts from the just shaped cap edge—25 sts. Leave sts on hold.

RIGHT SLEEVE

Work as for left sleeve to the top of cap shaping, only work 1 WS row even.

Shape top of cap

Bind off 8 sts at beg of next RS row, bind off 4 sts at beg of next RS row, 2 sts at beg of next 2 RS rows, AT THE SAME TIME, dec 1 st as for previous dec's once more—7 sts. Cut yarn.

Next row (RS) Rejoin yarn from the RS and pick up and k18 sts from the just shaped cap edge - 25 sts. Leave sts on hold.

FINISHING

Sew 3 of the raglan seams leaving one back raglan seam open.

Neckband

With circular needle, k20 (22, 24, 26, 24, 26) sts from the back neck, 25 sts from top of sleeve, 6 sts from the front holder, pick up and k 6 sts from shaped front neck edge, k6 (10, 12, 14, 12, 14) sts from the center front holder, 6 sts from the front holder, pick up and k6 sts from the shaped front neck edge, 25 sts from the top of sleeve - 100 (106, 110, 114, 110, 114) sts. Do not join, work back and forth in rows.

Row 1 (WS) P to the last st of sleeve, p this st tog with 1 st from the front, p to the last st of front, p this st tog with 1 st of sleeve, p to the last st of sleeve, p this st tog with 1 st of back, p to the last 2 sts, p2tog - 96 (102, 106, 110, 106, 110) sts.

Row 2 (RS) Knit, dec 2 (8, 8, 8, 4, 8) sts evenly spaced - 94 (94, 98, 102, 102, 102) sts.

Row 3 Knit.

Row 4 Purl.

Then, work row 2 of fisherman's rib for 1 1/2"/4cm. Then, work in plain k1, p1 rib for 1 row. Bind off in rib.

Sew last raglan seam. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew sides of pockets to front and reinforce for 1"/2.5cm at the top of each pocket. Block finished piece to measurements.
