MATERIALS

Jamieson & Smith 2 ply jumper yarn 100% Shetland wool (118m/129yds per 25g ball)

13 (14, 16, 18) balls shade FC24

1 pair 3mm (US #2-3) needles

1 pair 3.25mm (US #3) needles

2 buttons

Small press stud

TENSION

24 sts & 34 rows = 10cm (4in) using 3.25mm needles over 2 row pattern and after blocking

Standard Yarn Tension

30 sts & 32 rows = 10cm (4in) using 3.25mm needles over stocking stitch

PATTERN NOTES

The lower part of the main body of this garment is worked from side to side in two pieces.

The ribbed welt stitches are picked up along the bottom edge of the work and worked downwards, then the upper yoke stitches are then picked up from the top of the work and worked vertically upwards. Please see the schematic to see how the pieces fit together.

LOWER FRONT

Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 64 (68, 72, 76) sts and work in patt as folls:

Row 1 (RS): * K2, P2, rep from * to end of row.

Row 2: P.

At same time, commence shaping of left armhole by inc 1 st at beg of every P row 10 times, taking increased sts into pattern (74, 78, 82, 86 sts). Place a marker or waste yarn at the beg of the last inc row.

Continue on these sts for a further 35 1/2 (40 1/2, 45 1/2, 50 1/2) cm (14, 16, 18, 20 in), ending with a RS row. Place a marker at the end of the last row worked.

Commence shaping of right armhole by dec 1 st at the beg of the foll 10 purl rows (64 sts).

Cast off on WS.

With RS of work facing, and using 3mm needles, pick up 128 (144, 160, 180) sts along the unshaped lower edge of lower front (marked A on the diagram) and work in rib as folls:

Next row: * K2, P2, rep from * to end of row.

Rep this row until rib measures 9cm (3 1/2in). Cast off loosely in rib.

LOWER BACK

Work exactly as for lower front.

BACK YOKE

Using 3.25mm needles and with RS facing, pick up and K 104 (116, 128, 140) sts along the uppermost edge of lower back between markers.

First row (WS): P.

Work in pattern as for lower back until work measures 13 (15, 16, 17) cm (5, 5 1/2, 6, 6 1/2 in) ending with a WS row.

Shape Shoulders

Cast off 8 (9, 10, 11) sts at beg of foll 8 rows (40, 44, 48, 52 sts).

Cast off rem sts.

RIGHT FRONT YOKE

Taking front lower body, measure 25 (27, 30, 32 1/2) cm (10, 10 1/2, 12, 13 in) along upper edge starting at right armhole edge (at marker) and place pin to mark this point.

Using 3.25mm needles, pick up and K 60 (64, 72, 78) sts along RS upper edge of lower front, starting at pin and working to armhole edge.

Next row (WS): P.

Next row: * P2, K2, rep from * to end of row.

Work a further 7 (9, 11, 13) rows in patt ending with a WS row.

Next row (Buttonhole): Patt 8 sts, cast off 4, patt to end.

Next row: P to cast off sts, turn, cast on 4, turn, P8.

Work 14 (16, 16, 20) more rows, then on two following rows make another buttonhole.

Work 4 (4, 6, 6) more rows ending with a WS row.

Neck Shaping

Cast off 10 (10, 12, 13) sts at beg of next (RS) row and foll alt row (40, 44, 48, 52 sts) then dec 1 st at neck edge on foll 8 rows (32, 36, 40, 44 sts).

Shape Shoulder

Cast off 8 (9, 10, 11) sts at beg of next WS and foll 3 alt rows.

LEFT FRONT YOKE

With RS of lower front facing, and using 3.25mm needles pick up and K 54 (60, 68, 72) sts evenly across upper edge of lower front. The picked up stitches will extend past the centre front and approx 8 stitches will need to be picked up from BEHIND the right front yoke.

Next row (WS): P.

Next row: * K2, P2, rep from * to end of row.

Continue working these 2 rows as set until work measures same as right front to beginning of neck shaping ending with a RS row.

Shape Neck

Cast off 7 (8, 10, 10) sts at beg of next 2 foll WS rows (40, 44, 48, 52 sts), then dec 1 st at neck edge on foll 8 rows (32, 36, 40, 44 sts).

Shape Shoulder

Cast off 8 (9, 10, 11) sts at beg of next and foll 3 RS rows. 

SLEEVES

Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 48 (52, 56, 60) sts.

Row 1 (RS): * K2, P2, rep from * to end.

Row 2: P.

Rep patt as set above, inc 1 st at each end of 6th and every foll 8th row until 88 (92, 96, 100) sts. Continue without further shaping until work measures 47 (47, 48, 49 1/2) cm (18 1/2, 18.5, 19, 19 1/2 in).

Shape Sleeve Head

Dec 1 st at each end of every row until 36 (40, 44, 48) sts rem, then dec 1 st at beg of every row until 16 sts rem. Cast off.

NECK FRILL

Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 12 sts.

Row 1: K.

Row 2: P.

Row 3: K8, turn.

Row 4: P8.

Row 5: P.

Row 6: K.

Row 7: P8, turn.

Row 8: K8.

Rep these 8 rows until shorter side of work measures 61 (62 1/2, 64, 66) cm (24, 24 1/2, 25, 26 in). Leave sts on spare needle.

SLEEVE FRILLS (Make two)

Work exactly as for neck frill until shorter side of work measures 21 1/2 (23, 25, 27 1/2) cm (8 1/2, 9, 10, 10 3/4 in). Cast off.

MAKING UP

Press work lightly on wrong side, using a warm iron over a damp cloth, but do not press frills.

Sew up shoulder seams, join side and sleeve seams then set in sleeves, matching centre top of sleeve head to shoulder seam and ensuring side seams line up.

Sew the neck frill round neck, commencing at bottom of right front opening and ending at top of opening on left side, using a flat slip stitch. Take care to match centre point of frill to centre back of neck. Adjust length of frill as required and cast off.

Sew sleeve frills in place commencing at centre of cast on, attaching around cast on edge and then up centre of sleeve for approx 10cm (4in). Sew buttons in place and attach press stud to underside of right front frill at top of neck opening to hold frill in place. Darn in all ends.
