MATERIALS

Excelana 4 Ply Luxury Wool 100% pure new British wool (159m/174yds per 50g ball)

7 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 12) balls shade Cornflower Blue - MC

5 (6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9) balls shade Alabaster - CC

1 pair 3.25mm (US #3) needles

3 buttons

Stitch holders

TENSION

24 sts & 46 rows = 10cm (4in) using 3.25mm needles over slip stitch pattern

Standard Yarn Tension

28 sts and 36 rows = 10cm (4in) over stocking stitch using 3mm needles

LOWER POCKET LININGS (Make two)

Using 3.25mm needles and MC, cast on 24 sts and commencing with a K row work in stocking stitch until work measures 6 1/2cm (2 1/2in) ending with a WS row. Leave sts on a spare needle or holder.

UPPER POCKET LINING (Make one)

Using 3.25mm needles and MC, cast on 20 sts and commencing with a K row work in stocking stitch until work measures 6 1/2cm (2 1/2in) ending with a WS row. Leave sts on spare needle or holder as before.

FRONT

** Using 3.25mm needles and MC, cast on 102 (108, 114, 120, 126, 132, 138) sts loosely and commencing with a K row, work in stocking stitch until work measures 4cm (1 1/2in) ending with a WS row. Work in pattern as folls:

Row 1 (RS): Using CC, K2, * knit into loop only below next st and drop st off needle, K1, repeat from * to end.

Row 2: Using CC, K to end. Do not break off yarn.

Row 3: Using MC, K2, * K1, knit into loop only below next st and drop st off needle, repeat from * to last 2 sts, K2.

Row 4: Using MC, K to end. Do not break off yarn.

These 4 rows form patt. Continue in pattern until work measures 10cm (4in) from start of main patt, ending with a WS row **

Join Pockets

Next row (RS): Patt 6 (9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24), slip next 24 sts onto spare needle and in their place patt across 24 sts of one of the pocket linings, patt 42, slip next 24 sts onto a spare needle and in their place patt across 24 sts of 2nd pocket lining, patt to end.

Maintaining pattern, work straight in patt over all sts until front measures 18cm (7in) from start of main patt, ending with a WS row.

Next row (RS): Patt 76 (79, 82, 85, 88, 91, 94), slip 20 sts onto spare needle and in their place patt across 20 sts of top pocket lining, patt to end.

Maintaining pattern, work straight until front measures 20 1/2cm (8in) from start of main patt, ending with a WS row. *** With RS facing, cont in patt, shaping sides by inc 1 st at each end of next and every foll 12th row until there are 114 (120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 130) sts, taking inc sts into patt. Work straight until front measures 39 1/2 (40 1/2, 42, 43, 44 1/2, 46, 47) cm (15 1/2, 16, 16 1/2, 17, 17 1/2, 18, 18 1/2 in) from start of main patt ending with a WS row.

Shape Armholes

Maintaining patt, cast off 4 (5, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) sts at beg of next 2 rows (106, 110, 116, 120, 124, 128, 132 sts), then K2tog at each end of next and every foll alt row until 98 (102, 106, 110, 114, 118, 122) sts rem.

Work without further shaping until armhole measures 20 1/2 (21 1/2, 23, 24, 25 1/2, 26 1/2, 28) cm (8, 8 1/2, 9, 9 1/2, 10, 10 1/2, 11 in) from start of main patt ending with a WS row ***

Shape Shoulders

Next row (RS): Cast off 10 (10, 11, 11, 12, 12, 13), patt to end.

Next row (buttonhole): Cast off 10 (10, 11, 11, 12, 12, 13), patt 4, cast off 2, patt to end.

Next row: Cast off 10 (10, 11, 11, 12, 12, 13), patt to cast off sts, cast on 2, patt to end.

Next row: Cast off 10 (10, 11, 11, 12, 12, 13), patt 4, cast off 2, patt to end.

Next row: Cast off 10 (10, 10, 11, 11, 12, 12), patt to cast off sts, cast on 2, patt to end.

Next row: Cast off 10 (10, 10, 11, 11, 12, 12), patt to end.

Leave rem 38 (42, 42, 44, 44, 46, 46) sts on stitch holder, making a note of last row worked.

BACK

Work exactly as for the front from ** to **

Maintaining patt, work straight until back measures 20 1/2cm (8in) from start of main patt then work as for front from *** to *** (98, 102, 106, 110, 114, 118, 122 sts).

Shape Shoulders

Cast off 10 (10, 11, 11, 12, 12, 13) sts at beg of next 6 (6, 4, 6, 4, 6, 4) rows, then 0 (0, 10, 0, 11, 0, 12) at beg of next 0 (0, 2, 0, 2, 0, 2) rows then leave rem 38 (42, 42, 44, 44, 46, 46) sts on a stitch holder.

SLEEVES

Using 3.25mm needles and MC, cast on 48 (54, 60, 66, 72, 78, 84) sts loosely and commencing with a K row, work in stocking stitch until work measures 4cm (1 1/2in) from cast on, ending with a WS row. Commencing with row 1, work in main patt as for front until main patt measures 4cm (1 1/2in). Cont in patt, inc 1 st at each end of next and every foll 10th row until there are 80 (86, 92, 98, 104, 110, 116) sts, working inc sts into patt. Work without further shaping until sleeve measures 43 1/2 (44 1/2, 47, 47, 48, 48, 49 1/2) cm (17, 17 1/2, 18 1/2, 18 1/2, 19, 19, 19 1/2 in) from start of main patt, ending with a WS row.

Shape Sleeve Head

Cast off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows (74, 80, 86, 92, 98, 104, 110 sts), then K2tog at beg of every foll row until 20 sts rem. Cast off rem sts.

NECKBAND

Join left shoulder seam. Using 3.25mm needles, MC and with RS facing, patt 38 (42, 42, 44, 44, 46, 46) sts on holder at back of neck and patt across 38 (42, 42, 44, 44, 46, 46) sts on holder at front, continuing in patt from last row worked on front (76, 84, 84, 88, 88, 92, 92 sts).

Work 2 rows straight in patt, commencing with appropriate row of pattern.

Next row: Patt 36 (40, 40, 42, 42, 44, 44), [K2tog] twice, patt to end.

Work 3 rows straight.

Next row: Patt 35 (39, 39, 41, 41, 43, 43), [K2tog] twice, patt to end.

Next row (buttonhole): Patt to last 6 sts, cast off 2, patt to end.

Next row: Patt to cast off sts, cast on 2, patt to end.

Work 1 row straight.

Next row: Patt 34 (38, 38, 40, 40, 42, 42), [K2tog] twice, patt to end (70, 78, 78, 82, 82, 86, 86 sts). 

Work 2 rows straight.

Using MC only, and commencing with a K row, work in stocking stitch for 2 rows.

Next row: K34 (38, 38, 40, 40, 42, 42), [Kfb] twice, K to end.

Work 3 rows straight.

Next row (buttonhole): K35 (39, 39, 41, 41, 43, 43), [Kfb] twice, K to last 6 sts, cast off 2, K4.

Next row: P to cast off sts, cast on 2, P to end.

Work 2 rows straight.

Next row: K36 (40, 40, 42, 42, 44, 44), [Kfb] twice, K to end (76, 84, 84, 88, 88, 92, 92 sts).

Work 1 row straight.

Cast off loosely.

MAKING UP

Press hems only through a damp cloth. 

Pocket Tops

Using 3.25mm needles and MC, K across sts on holder of each pocket. Work in stocking stitch for 2 1/2cm (1in) ending with a WS row. Cast off. Rep for each pocket.

Join first 10 sts of right shoulder, side and sleeve seams. Inset sleeves, carefully matching centre of sleeve head and shoulder seam and matching side seams. Turn under all bar 3 rows of stocking stitch hem to WS of lower edge of body and very loosely slip stitch into place. Repeat for cuffs. Turn under stocking stitch edging round neck, again slip stitching into place very loosely. Turn over half of pocket top edging and slip stitch into place. Sew pocket linings into position.

Right Back Neckband

Using 3.25mm needles, MC and with RS facing pick up 30 (30, 32, 33, 35, 36, 38) sts across right shoulder and neck opening. Work 16 rows in garter st, inc 1 st at neck edge on next and every foll alt row until 38 (38, 40, 41, 43, 44, 46) sts. Cast off loosely.

Catch down edge of neckband at shoulder edge to underside of main body. Sew on buttons. Darn in all ends.
