Ribbed pullover with raglan sleeves

Ladies Pullover. The knit ribbing creates diagonal lines, emphasizing the shoulders (Hint: for an even stronger accent, add shoulder pads!). The geometric pattern of the shorts repeats the lines of the pullover. Marlene pants or a flared skirt would also go well with this beauty.

Size: 34/36, 38/40 and 42/44.

Instructions are given for first size. Figures in parentheses refer to larger sizes. When only one figure is given, it applies to all sizes.

Materials: Schoppel-Wolle "In Silk" (75% pure wool, 25% silk, approx. 200 m/100 g): 350 (400-450) g in Natural, col 980; size 4.5 and 5 mm Addi needles; size 4.5 mm circular needle, 40 cm/16" long; two white shoulder pads.

Rib pattern: K2, p2.

Stockinette: K on RS, p on WS Reverse Stockinette: P on RS, k on WS.

Ridge pattern: * Work 3 rows in Stockinette, 3 rows in rev Stockinette; rep from * throughout.

Short rows with 'double st': Turn work after having worked the number of sts indicated in pattern. Sl 1 st as if to purl, with yarn in front of work, bring yarn to back of work over top of the needle and pull it very tightly; this will rotate the st to the back of the needle so that both 'legs' of the st from the row below are now on the needle. On foll rows, work to 'double st' [= 2 loops on needle], insert needle into both loops and knit or purl as you would normally.

Tension: 18 sts and 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm/4" x 4" in rib pat on size 4.5 mm needles, measured slightly stretched; 16 sts and 30 rows = 10 x 10 cm/4" x 4" in ridge pat on size 5 mm needles.

Back: With size 4.5 mm needles, cast on 74 (82-90) sts. Next WS row: Selvedge st, p1, * k2, p2; rep from * to last 4 sts, k2, p1, selvedge st. Work in rib pat as established until back measures 10 cm/4" = 25 rows from cast-on. Next RS row: Work to last 4 sts, turn work, work 'double st', work to last 4 sts, turn work, work 'double st'; work to 4 sts before 'double st' = 8 sts on LH needle, turn work, work 'double st', work to 4 sts before 'double st', turn work, work 'double st'.

For size 38/40 only, leave 4 additional sts unworked at end of next 4 rows.

For size 42/44 only, leave 4 additional sts unworked at end of next 8 rows.

For all sizes, leave 2 additional sts unworked at end of every foll row until 2 center sts remain and 32 (34-36) short-rows have been worked.

Cut yarn. Rejoin yarn at right edge and with size 5 mm needles, work in ridge pat, working the 2 loops of each 'double st' as instructed and increasing (M1R = pick up horizontal thread and k1tbl) 12 (14-16) times on first row = 86 (96-106) sts. Mark center 2 sts. Cont in ridge pat and in the 3rd row and every following 3rd row, work selvedge st, k2tog or p2tog, keeping in pat; work to marker, slip marker (sm), work [M1R or M1L = pick up horizontal thread and p1tbl, keeping in pat] twice, sm, work to last 3 sts, k2tog or p2tog, keeping in pat, selvedge st. Since all decreases and increases are paired and are only worked to offset the pat, stitch count does not vary. When back measures 30 cm/12 at side edge = 74 rows in ridge pat, bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Shape raglan armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 2 sts at beg of next 14 (16-19) rows, and 1 st at beg of next 16 (18-20) rows. While working raglan shaping, cont to work decs and incs every 3rd row as established. When back measures 60 (61.5-63) cm/23 3/4" (24 1/4"-24 3/4") from cast-on, measured along center of back, and 24 (28-32) raglan shaping rows have been worked, divide work in half at center. Working each side separately, cont to work raglan shaping as established, but stop working decs and incs every 3rd row and at same time, bind off 5 (5-6) sts at each neck edge every other row 2 (4-2) times and 4 (4-5) sts every other row 2 (0-2) times. No sts remain.

Front: Work same as for back to raglan shaping.

Shape raglan armhole: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 2 sts at beg of next 8 (16-20) rows and 4 sts at beg of next 8 (6-6) rows. While working raglan shaping, cont to work decs and incs every 3rd row as established. When front measures 55 (56.5-58) cm/21 3/4" (22 1/4"-23") from cast-on, measured along center of front, and 12 (16-20) raglan shaping rows have been worked, bind off center 10 (12-14) sts. Working each side separately, cont to work raglan shaping as established, but stop working decs and incs every 3rd row and at same time, bind off 3 sts at each neck edge once and 4 sts every other row twice. No sts remain.

Sleeves: With size 4.5 mm needles, cast on 42 (44-46) sts. Next WS row: Selvedge st, p1, * k2, p2; rep from * to last 4 sts, k2, p1, selvedge st. Work in rib pat as established until sleeve measures 8 cm/3 1/4" = 21 rows from cast-on. Change to size 5 mm needles, work in ridge pat and inc 6 sts evenly across first row = 48 (50-52) sts. Cont in ridge pat and shape sleeve as foll: Inc 1 st at beg and end of 11th row from rib pat, then every foll 12th row 9 times (every alternating 10th and 12th row 10 times - every foll 10th row 11 times) = 68 (72-76) sts. Cont in ridge pat until sleeve measures 43 cm/17" = 130 rows from rib pat.

Shape raglan sleeve cap: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows and 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows. * Work 1 row even. Bind off 1 st at beg of next 2 rows. Repeat from * 13 (14-15) times = 30 (32-34) sts. Bind off 1 st at right edge every other row 8 times and at same time, bind off 3 (3-4) sts at left edge every other row 6 (8-5) times and 2 sts every other row 2 (0-3) times. No sts remain.

Finishing: Pin pieces to measurements and block with damp towels. Sew raglan, sleeve and side seams. With size 4 mm circular needle, pick up and k 84 (90-96) sts around neck edge. Join for working in rnds and work rib pat in rnds for 8 cm/3 1/4" = 21 rnds. Bind off all sts loosely. Sew on shoulder pads.
