Pullover in bird tracks pattern



Pullover with bird pattern and fluffy collar. Knitting techniques from the 50's are back in fashion. The fluffy collar adds a feminine touch. Here, it's classically combined with a sheath skirt but it will also look wonderful with jeans and pumps.

Size: 34/36 and 40/42.

Instructions are given for first size. Figure in parentheses refer to larger size. When only one figure is given, it applies to both sizes.

Materials: Debbie Bliss "BFL Aran" (100% wool, approx. 75 m/50 g): 400 (450) g in Duck Egg, col 14, and Louisa Harding "Luzia" (80% viscose, 20% nylon, approx. 40 m/50 g): 100 g in Silver, col 09; size 4 mm Addi needles; size 4 mm circular needles, 40 and 80 cm/16" and 32" long; cable needle (cn).

Stockinette in rnds: K every rnd.

Cable pattern: Work back and forth in rows according to chart A. Work RS rows from right to left. On all WS rows not shown on chart, work sts as they appear. Beg chart pat with selvedge st, work 12-st pat rep between arrows throughout, and end with selvedge st. Repeat rows 1 - 4 throughout.

Bird tracks pattern in rows: Work according to chart B, back and forth in rows. Work RS rows from right to left. On all WS rows not shown on chart, work sts as they appear or according to chart key. Beg chart pat with 4 sts before first arrow, work 14 sts between arrows for pat repeat, and end with 4 sts after 2nd arrow. Repeat rows 1 - 12 throughout.

Bird tracks pattern in rnds: Work according to chart B. Work odd-numbered rnds from right to left. On all even-numbered rnds not shown on chart, work sts as they appear or according to chart key. Position sts same as for bird tracks pat in rows.

Full-fashion decreases: K2tog before marker, SKP (sl1 kwise, k1, psso) after marker.

Tension: 21 sts and 29 rows = 10 x 10 cm/4" x 4" in cable pat; 19 sts and 28 rows = 10 x 10 cm/4" x 4" in bird tracks pat.

Back: With Duck Egg, cast on 74 (86) sts.

Next WS row: Selvedge st, k1, * p3, k3; rep from * to last 6 sts, p3, k2, selvedge st. Next, work in cable pat according to chart A until back measures 11 cm/4 1/2" = 33 rows from cast-on.

Next, work in bird tracks pat according to chart B and inc 4 (6) sts evenly across first row = 78 (92) sts. Work pat rep 5 (6) times across row. When back measures 25 cm/10" = 70 rows in bird tracks pat, sl sts to holder. 

Front: Work same as for back.

Sleeves: With Duck Egg, cast on 38 sts and work first WS row same as for back.

Next, work in cable pat according to chart A until sleeve measures 12 cm/4 3/4" = 37 rows from cast-on.

Next, work in bird tracks pat according to chart B and inc 4 (12) sts evenly across first row = 42 (50) sts. Work pat rep 3 times across row. For size 34/36, work selvedge st, work pat rep between arrows 3 times, selvedge st. Work in pat for 10 rows.

Shape sleeve: Inc 1 st at beg and end of next row, then every foll 10th row 6 (7) times = 56 (66) sts. Cont in pat until sleeve measures 37 cm/14 1/2" = 104 rows in bird tracks pat, then sl sts to holder.

Yoke: Sl 56 (66) left sleeve sts from holder to longer circular needle, place marker (pm), sl 78 (92) front sts from holder to needle, pm, sl 56 (66) right sleeve sts from holder to needle, pm, sl 78 (92) back sts from holder to needle, pm = 268 (316) sts. Join for working in rnds, work in bird tracks pat and on first rnd, ktog each selvedge st with its adjoining st = 260 (308) sts. Working full-fashion decs, dec 1 st before and after each marker, every other rnd 15 (18) times = 8 sts decreased per rnd.

Change to shorter circular needle as stitch count decreases. After having worked a total of 30 (36) rnds and yoke measures 11 (13) cm/4 1/2"(5 1/4") from beg, you will have 140 (164) sts on the needle. Change to Silver, work Stockinette in rnds for 10 cm/4" and dec 32 (38) sts evenly on first rnd = 108 (126) sts. Working full-fashion decs, dec 1 st before and after each marker, every 5th rnd twice, then every foll 3rd rnd 3 (4) times = 68 (78) sts. Bind off all sts loosely. 

Finishing: Pin piece to measurements and block with damp towels. Sew side and sleeve seams.
