Short and boxy: The 80's look is celebrating a comeback. Here is an elegant variation - made with a soft alpaca mix and a spectacular oversized turtleneck.
Sizes: Medium (Large)
Instructions are for size Medium. Changes for size Large are in parentheses. If there is only one number it applies to both sizes.
Materials:
Lana Grossa "Alta Moda Superbaby Fine" (63% Merino Wool, 27% Baby Alpaca, 10% Polyamide, yardage = 105 m/25 g) 400 (450) g off white/light gray heather (#7).
Knitting needles, one pair each sizes US 6 and 7 (4 and 4.5mm), one circular needle size US 6 (4mm).
Rib Pat: K1, P1 Rib
Half Brioche Rib in rows:
Row 1 (RS): K1 (selvage st), p1, *with yarn in front of work sl 1 st purlwise, bring yarn to back around needle to make a yo (called sl 1 st with yo), p1; rep from *, end k1 (selvage st).
Row 2 (WS): K1 (selvage st), k1, *p the next st tog with yo, k1; rep from *, end k1 (selvage st). Rep rows 1 and 2.
Cable-Brioche Pattern: Follow the Chart.
Gauge:
Half Brioche Rib with US 7 (4.5mm) needles: 19 sts and 34 rows = 4 x 4"/10 x 10 cm.
38 sts Cable-Brioche Pat: approx 6"/15 cm wide.
Back: With size US 6 (4mm) needles cast on 111 (119) sts and work in Rib Pat for 3/4"/2 cm. Change to US 7 (4.5mm) needles and cont in pat as foll: K1 (selvage st), 35 (39) sts Half Brioche Rib, 38 sts Cable-Brioche Pat following chart, 36 (40) sts Half Brioche Rib, k1 (selvage st). Cont in pats as established until piece measures 12 1/2"/32 cm from beg. For the armhole shaping bind off 7 sts at beg of next 2 rows = 97 (105) sts. Work even until armhole measures 7 (8)"/18 (20) cm. Bind off.
Front: Work same as Back until piece measures 17 (17 3/4)"/43 (45) cm from beg. For the neck shaping bind off the center 17 sts and working both sides at once, bind off from each neck edge 2 sts twice and dec 1 st every 2nd row 8 times. When same length as back, bind off rem 28 (32) sts each side for shoulders.
Sleeves: With size US 6 (4mm) needles cast on 41 (49) sts and work in Rib Pat for 3/4"/2 cm. Change to US 7 (4.5mm) needles and work in Half Brioche Rib and inc 1 st each side every 12th row 4 times and every 10th row 10 times, working inc sts into rib = 69 (77) sts. Work even until piece measures 20"/50.5 cm from beg. Bind off.
Finishing: Sew shoulder seams. For the collar, with WS facing and circular needle, pick up and k 102 sts evenly around neck edge. Join and work in rnds in K1, P1 Rib for 3/4"/2 cm. Cont in Half Brioche Rib as foll: Rnd 1: *p the purl sts, work the k sts as sl 1 with yo; rep from * around. Rnd 2: P the purl sts and k the k st and yo tog. Rep rnds 1 and 2 until collar measures approx 9"/23 cm. Bind off sts loosely. Set in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.
