Size: 34/36, 38/40, and 42/44. Figures for sizes 38/40 and 42/44 are given in parentheses, in ascending order, separated by a dash. If only one figure is given, it applies for all three sizes.

Materials: Austermann Wolle “Natura” (46% wool, 28% viscose/rayon, 12% cotton, 7% alpaca, 7% mohair, approx. 100 m/111 yds/50 g) 300 (350-400)g of natural, col 01, and 50 g of Teal, col 11; Prym knitting needles, size 8 mm (US 11) and 1 circular needle, size 8 mm, 40 cm/16'' long.

Rib pattern: k 1, p 1 alternately.

Stocking stitch: k RS rows, p WS rows

Intarsia pattern: Work in rows, foll chart. Read RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right. All rows are shown. 1 square of the chart represents 1 st and 1 row. Arrange pattern from centre = arrow in chart. For colour placement, see legend. Colour areas are outlined. The number inside each outlined area indicates colour to be used. When changing colour, twist the 2 yarns tog on back of the work so that no holes are formed. When working larger colour areas, use several balls of each colour or twist the colours tog occasionally so that stretched yarns on the back of the work are not too long.

Full-fashioned decreases: Right edge: selvage st, k 1, skp = slip 1 st kwise, k the foll st, psso. Left edge: Work up to 4 sts before end of row, then k 2 tog, k 1, selvage st.

Full-fashioned increases: On right edge: selvage st, k 1, pick up horizontal thread and k 1 tbl. On left edge: Work up to 2 sts before end of row, then pick up horizontal thread and k 1 tbl, k 1, selvage st.

Tension gauge: 13.5 sts and 19 rows of basic pattern = 10x10 cm/4" x 4".

Back: With natural, cast on 64 (70-76) sts. Work rib pattern, beginning with 1 WS row. After 5 cm/2" = 9 rows of rib pattern, change to stocking stitch. When work measures 41 cm/161/4'' = 78 rows from end of rib pattern, bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows, to begin armholes and shape armholes as foll: on each side of every 2nd row, work 1 full-fashioned dec, 4 (5-6) times = 50 (54-58) sts. When work measures 15 (16- 17) cm/6" (63/8"/63/4") = 28 (30-32) rows from beginning of armholes, cast off centre 12 (14-16) sts, for neck edge, and complete each half separately, shaping neck as foll: at neck edge, in every 2nd row, cast off 5 sts once and 2 sts once = 12 (13-14) shoulder sts. In the foll RS row, cast off remaining shoulder sts. Complete 2nd half in same manner, reversing shaping.

Front: Begin as for the back. After 5 cm/2" = 9 rows of rib pattern, change to stocking stitch. Work 5 rows of stocking stitch with natural then mark the centre of the front. Begin the charted pattern here - the marked centre corresponds to the arrow on the chart. The 6th row of stocking stitch = WS row is the 1 st row of the chart. Work armholes as for back. For the lower neck, cast off the centre 8 (10-12) sts when the work measures 10 (11-12) cm/4" (43/8''-43/4'') = 18 (20-22) rows from beginning of armholes and complete each half separately, shaping neck as foil: at neck edge, in every 2nd row, cast off 3 sts once and 2 sts once, then work full-fashioned dec 4 times = 12 (13-14) shoulder sts. Cast off the 12 (13-14) shoulder sts at same level as for the back. Complete 2nd half in same manner, reversing shaping.

Slveee: With natural, cast on 28 (30-32) sts. Work rib pattern, beginning with 1 WS row. After 5 cm/2" = 9 rows of rib pattern, change to stocking stitch. In 6th row from end of rib pattern, inc 1 st on each side, to begin sleeve shaping, then work 1 full-fashioned inc on each side of every 6th row 9 (9-10) times = 48 (50-54) sts. When sleeve measures 37 cm/141/2" = 70 rows from end of rib pattern, cast off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows, to begin sleeve cap and shape sleeve cap as foll: work 1 full-fashioned dec on each side of every 2nd row 10 (11-13) times, bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then in the foll RS row cast off remaining 16 sts. Make 2nd sleeve identically.

Finishing: Block pieces, dampen, and let dry. Sew side, sleeve, and shoulder seams. Sew sleeves in place. With circular needle and natural, pick up 50 (54-58) sts from neck edge and work rib pattern. When rib pattern meausres 6 cm/ 21/2'' = 11 rnds, cast off all sts loosely. Fold this neck band half to inside and sew edge in place.
