Add some drama to your wardrobe with this patterned poncho, which accentuates the main mosaic pinstripe pattern with mosaic diamond motifs at the lower edges. Constructed from three rectangular panels, it features striped side borders that are picked up and knit in garter stitch.
MATERIALS
Deborah Norville Everyday Heathers by Premier Yarns, 3 1/2oz/100g skeins, each approx 180yd/164m (acrylic) (4)
• 5 skeins each in #0008 grey heather (A) and #0006 deep sea heather (B)
• One size 9 (5.5mm) circular needle, 24"/60cm long OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE
• Removable stitch markers

GAUGE 19 sts and 36 rows to 4"/10cm over chart pats and slip stitch stripe using size 9 (5.5mm) needles.

NOTES
1) One row of chart represents 2 rows of knitting, a RS row and a WS row. Read the RS rows from right to left and the WS rows from left to right. Only one color is worked over 2 rows, the sts in the other color are slipped puriwise.
2) Chart is worked in garter st (k every row). The letters at the right side of the chart represent the color used to knit the row, and also correspond to the first and last st of the row. The other color will be slipped on those 2 rows.
3) All sts are slipped with the yam at the WS of the work. Therefore, on RS rows sts are slipped wyib and on WS rows sts are slipped wyif.
4) Circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts. Do not join.
SLIP STITCH STRIPE (multiple of 4 sts plus 3)
Row 1 (RS) With A, k3, *sl 1 wyib, k3; rep from * to end.
Row 2 With A, *k3, sl 1 wyif; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.
Row 3 With B, k1, *sl 1 wyib, k3; rep from * to last 2 sts, sl 1, k1.
Row 4 With B, k1, *sl 1 wyif, k3; rep from * to last 2 sts, sl 1, k1.
Rep rows 1-4 for slip stitch stripe.
SIDE PANEL (make 2)
With B, cast on 63 sts. Knit 4 rows. Beg chart 1
Row 1 (RS) Work to rep line, work 16-st rep 3 times, work to end of chart.
Cont to work chart in this way through row 26, then work rows 3-30. [With B, knit 2 rows, with A, knit 2 rows] twice. Work in slip stitch stripe until piece measures 43"/109cm from beg, end with a WS row. [With A, knit 2 rows, with B, knit 2 rows] twice. Work rows 1-26 of chart 1, then rows 3-30 once more.
With B, knit 4 rows. Bind off with B.
CENTER BACK PANEL
With B, cast on 25 sts. Knit 4 rows.
Beg chart 2
Work rows 1-40 of chart 2 four times, then work rows 1-42 once more. With B, knit 4 rows. Bind off with B.
Side edging
With RS facing and B, pick up and k 1 st for every 2 rows along side edge of center panel. Knit 1 row. With A, knit 2 rows, with B, knit 2 rows.
Bind off with B. Rep for opposite side edge.
FINISHING
Sew center panel between side panels, lining up cast-on edges.
Lower back edging
With RS facing and A, pick up and k 1 st in every st along cast-on edges. Knit 3 rows. With B, knit 4 rows. Bind off with B. Front edging
With RS facing and B, pick up and k 1 st in every st along bound-off edge of side panel. Knit 3 rows. With B, knit 4 rows. Bind off with B. Rep for rem side panel.
Side edging
With RS facing and B, pick up and k 1 st for every 2 rows along side edge of side panel. Knit 3 rows. With A, knit 4 rows, with B, knit 4 rows. Bind off with B. Rep for rem side edge.
Neck edge
With RS facing and B, pick up and k 1 st for every 2 rows along inside edge of side panel to top of center panel, pm, pick up and k 1 st for every bound-off st along upper edge of center panel, pm, pick and k 1 st for every 2 rows along inside edge of opposite side panel. Knit 1 row.
Next row (RS) [K to 1 st before marker, place new marker, S2KP removing original marker] twice, k to end.
Next row Knit.
Change to A and rep last 2 rows twice, change to B and rep last 2 rows twice. Bind off with B.
FACT: Mosaic colorwork patterns are traditionally worked in garter stitch, meaning that no purling is required.
