Two-Tone Knit Dress

Knit Turtleneck Dress



Dress with yoke, turtleneck and knit-in pockets looks like it's two pieces, but it's not. The sleeveless dress has been knitted into the design. A complete look, which stands by itself but can also be stylishly combined with a full length slitted skirt.

Size: 34/36, 38/40 and 42/44.

Instructions are given for first size. Figures in parentheses refer to larger sizes. When only one figure is given, it applies to all sizes.

Materials: Junghans-Wolle "Uppland" (60% acrylic, 20% pure wool, 20% polyamide, approx. 165 m/100 g): 400 (400-450) g in White, col 102-828, and "Fluffetto" (70% alpaca, 30% polyamide, approx. 225 m/50 g): 100 g each in Grey, col 102-648, and Charcoal, col 102-646;

size 4, 4.5 and 5 mm Prym needles; size 4 and 5 mm circular needles, 40 cm/16" long.

Rib pattern: K1, p1 alternately.

Stockinette: K on RS, p on WS

Full-fashion decreases: At beg of RS row, selvedge st, k1, p1, SKP (sl1 kwise, k1, psso); at end of RS row, work to last 5 sts, k2tog, p1, k1, selvedge st.

Tension:

21 sts and 24 rows = 10 x 10 cm/4" x 4" in rib pat with Uppland and size 4 mm needles;

20 sts and 21 rows = 10 x 10 cm/4" x 4" in rib pat with Uppland and size 4.5 mm needles;

19 sts and 20 rows = 10 x 10 cm/4" x 4" in rib pat with Uppland and size 5 mm needles.

All rib pat gauges are measures slightly stretched.

17 sts and 20 rows = 10 x 10 cm/4" x 4" in Stockinette with Fluffetto and size 5 mm needles. 

Back: With Uppland and size 4 mm needles, cast on 96 (106-114) sts. Beg with a WS row, work in rib pat until back measures 15 cm/6" = 35 rows from cast-on. Change to size 5 mm needles and Fluffetto in Charcoal. Work in Stockinette and decrease (k2tog) 16 (20-22) sts evenly across first row = 80 (86-92) sts. When back measures 41 cm/16 1/4" = 82 rows in Stockinette, shape armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows and 1 st at beg of next 6 (8, 10) rows = 64 (68-72) sts. Cont in Stockinette until armhole measures 21 (22-23) cm/8 1/4" (8 3/4"-9") = 42 (44-46) rows from beg. Bind off all sts.

Front: Work same as for back, working with Fluffetto in Grey and at same time, when front measures 8 cm/3 1/4" from rib pat, place first set of markers at right and left edge for pockets and when front measures 22 cm/8 3/4" from rib pat, place 2nd set of markers at right and left edge. When front measures same length as back to armholes, shape armholes same as for back and when armhole measures 13 (14-15) cm/5 1/4" (5 1/2"-6") from beg, shape neck: Bind off center 14 (16-18) sts.

Working each side separately, bind off 3 sts at each neck edge every other row twice, 2 sts every other row twice and 1 st every other row 3 times -12 (13-14) sts remain for each shoulder. Cont in Stockinette until armhole measures 21 (22-23) cm/8 1/4" (8 3/4"-9")from beg. Bind off remaining 12 (13-14) sts for each shoulder. 

Sleeves: With Uppland and size 4.5 mm needles, cast on 72 (80-88) sts. Beg with a WS row, work in rib pat for 9 rows.

Shape sleeve: Inc 1 st at beg and end of next row, then every foll 6th row 3 times = 80 (88-96) sts. Cont in rib pat until sleeve measures 15 cm/6" = 31 rows from cast-on.

Shape sleeve cap: Bind off 4 (5-6) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Working full-fashion decs, dec 1 st at beg and end of foll 17 RS rows, then bind off 2 (2-3) sts at beg of next 2 rows and 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 28 (30-32) sts. 

Pockets (make 2): With size 5 mm needles and Fluffetto in Grey, cast on 20 sts and work in Stockinette until pocket measures 14 cm/5 1/2" from cast-on. Bind off all sts.

Collar: With size 5 mm circular needle and Uppland, loosely cast on 120 (124-128) sts. Join for working in rnds and work rib pat in rnds for 20 cm/ 8". Change to size 4 mm circular needle and cont in rib pat until collar measures 28 cm/11" from beg. Sl sts to holder.

Finishing: Pin pieces to measurements and block with damp towels. Sew each pocket to side seam, between markers. Sew remaining 2 pocket edges in place. Sew shoulder and side seams, sewing 4th edge of pocket and not edge of front to edge of back. Thread blunt tapestry needle with one strand of Uppland and backstitch live collar sts to neck edge, working from the right side, as foll: Insert tapestry needle from back to front in 2nd collar st, then insert tapestry needle into first st, out of 3rd st, and back into 2nd st. Cont in this manner until all collar sts have been joined to neck edge. Sew sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in place.
