Mohair coat



Mohair coat a real feel-good piece. Pleasantly fluffy, without being hairy. Incredibly wearable at home or on the go. Lady-like with a dress or casual with jeans.

Size: 36/38, 40/42 and 44/46.

Instructions are given for first size. Figures in parentheses refer to larger sizes. When only one figure is given, it applies to all sizes.

Materials: Lang Yarns "Merino 150" (100% Merino wool, approx. 150 m/50 g): 500 (550-600) g in Antique Pink, col 197.0148, and Lang Yarns "Mohair Luxe" (77% mohair, 23% silk, approx. 175 m/50 g): 300 (350-400) g in Pink, col 698.0148;

size 7 mm Prym circular needles, 40 and 100 cm/ 16" and 40" long; size 5 mm circular needle, 40 cm/16" long; 4 buttons in Pink, 25 mm/ 1" in diameter.

Stockinette: K on RS, p on WS.

Front band (worked over 8 sts):

At beg of row 1 (RS) on right front: * Sl 1 st as if to purl, with yarn in front of work, k1; rep from * 3 times. 

Row 2 (WS): * Sl 1 st as if to purl, with yarn in front of work, k1; rep from * 3 times. Repeat rows 1 + 2 throughout.

At end of row 1 on left front (RS): * K1, sl 1 st as if to purl, with yarn in front of work; rep from * 3 times.

Row 2 (WS): * K1, sl 1 st as if to purl, with yarn in front of work; rep from * 3 times. Repeat rows 1 + 2 throughout.

Brioche pattern:

Row 1 (RS): * K1, inserting needle through center of st in row below; k1; rep from *.

Rows 2 + 4 (WS): Knit all sts.

Row 3: * K1; k1, inserting needle through center of st in row below; rep from *. Repeat rows 1 - 4 throughout.

Shaker rib pattern:

Row 1 (RS): * K1, inserting needle through center of st in row below; p1; rep from *.

Row 2 (WS): Knit all sts. Repeat rows 1 + 2 throughout.

Buttonhole: On a RS row, work 6 sts in pat as established, turn work, work 6 sts, turn work, work 6 sts, yo, work to end of row. Work next WS row to yo, turn work, work to end of row, turn work, work to last 8 sts, sl next st as if to purl, with yarn in front of work, ktog next st and yo, work to end of row. Cont to work across all sts in pat as established.

Tension: 11 sts and 28 rows = 10 x 10 cm/ 4" x 4" in brioche pat on size 7 mm needle; 8 front band sts are 3 cm/ 1 1/4" wide.

Coat is worked in one piece to armholes. Work with 1 strand Merino 150 and 2 strands Mohair Luxe held tog throughout!

Right front, back, and left front: With 3 strands of yarn held tog and longer size 7 mm circular needle, cast on 127 (137-147) sts.

Next WS row: Work 8 front band sts (see WS row, left front), k 111 (121-131) sts, work 8 front band sts (see WS row, right front).

Next, position sts as foll: Work 8 front band sts (see RS row, right front), work 111 (121-131) sts in brioche pat, work 8 front band sts (see RS row, left front). Work in pat as established until body measures 17.5 (18.5-19.5) cm/ 6 7/8" (7 1/4"-7 3/4") from cast-on, ending with a WS row. Work first buttonhole at right front as instructed. Cont in pat and work 3 more buttonholes, spaced 17.5 cm/6 7/8" apart. When body measures 60 cm/23 3/4" = 167 rows from cast-on, divide for fronts and back: Sl 35 (38-41) right front sts and 35 (38-41) left front sts to separate holders = 57 (61-65) sts remain for back. 

Back: Work in brioche pat and inc 1 st (= selvedge st) at beg and end of next row = 59 (63-67) sts. Cont in brioche pat until back measures 20 (21-22) cm/8" (8 1/4"-8 3/4") = 56 (58-60) rows, then shape shoulders as foll: Bind off 7 sts at each shoulder edge once, then 7 sts twice (then 7 sts once and 8 sts once - then 8 sts twice). At same time, on first row of shoulder shaping, shape neck: Bind off center 9 (11-13) sts. Working each side separately, bind off 2 sts at each neck edge every other row twice.

Left Front: Sl 35 (38-41) left front sts from holder back to working needle. Work in brioche pat and inc 1 st (= selvedge st) at right edge = 36 (39-42) sts. Cont in brioche pat until left front measures 15 (16-16) cm/6" (6 1/4"-6 1/4") = 42 (44-46) rows.

Shape front neck: Sl 8 front band sts at left edge to holder, then bind off 2 sts at left edge every other row 2 (3-4) times, 1 st every other row twice, then 1 st every foll 4th row once. When same length as back to shoulder, shape shoulder at right edge same as for back.

Right Front: Work same as for left front, reversing all shaping. 

Sleeves: With 3 strands of yarn held tog and shorter size 7 mm circular needle, cast on 31 (33-35) sts.

Next WS row: Knit. Work in brioche pat until sleeve measures 10 cm/4" = 29 rows from cast-on.

Shape sleeve: Inc 1 st at beg and end of next row, then every foll 10th row 8 times = 49 (51-53) sts. When sleeve measures 49 (50-51) cm/19 1/4" (19 3/4"-20 1/4") = 137 (141-143) rows from cast-on, sl sts to holder. 

Pockets (make 2): With 3 strands of yarn held tog and size 7 mm circular needle, cast on 20 sts.

Next WS row: Knit. Work in brioche pat until pocket measures 14 cm/5 1/2" = 40 rows from cast-on. Bind off all sts on a WS row.

Finishing: Pin pieces to measurements and block with damp towels. Sew shoulder seams. Sl 8 right front band sts to size 7 mm circular needle; with 3 strands of yarn held tog, pick up and k 17 (19-21) sts along right front neck edge, 19 (21-23) sts along back neck edge, 17 (19-21) sts along left front neck edge, sl 8 left front band sts from holder to needle = 69 (75-81) sts. Work first and last 8 front band sts in pat as established and work remaining 53 (59-65) sts in shaker rib pat. Work in pat until collar measures 8 cm/3 1/4" from beg, ending with a WS row. 

Next RS row: K2tog while binding off 8 right front band sts.

Next WS row: P2tog while binding off 8 left front band sts. Cont in pat across remaining 53 (59-65) sts for 6 cm/2 1/2".

Next 2 rows: Work in k1, p1 rib. Change to size 5 mm circular needle, drop Merino 150 and work in Stockinette with 2 strands Mohair Luxe held tog for 2 cm/3/4". Fold collar in half to wrong side and graft live sts to neck edge. Sew short edges of collar to front bands. Sew pockets to fronts as shown on schematic. With size 7 mm circular needle and 3 strands of yarn held tog, pick up and k 49 (51-53) sts along left front and back armhole edge.

Next WS row: Knit. Graft sts to held left sleeve sts with Kitchener Stitch. Repeat for right sleeve. Sew sleeve seams. Sew on buttons.
