Cardigan in herringbone stitch



Inspired by the Norfolk Blazer: This long cardigan with a lapel collar, and a belt worked in a slip stitch herringbone stitch.

Size: Small/Medium

Materials:

Lana Grossa "Alta Moda Alpaca" (90% Baby Alpaca, 5% Merino Wool, 5% Polyamide, yardage = 140 m/50 g) 450 g black (#6) and 350 g off white (#14).

Knitting needles, one pair each sizes US 10 and 10 1/2 (6 and 7mm), one circular needle size US 10 (6 mm), crochet hook size US G-6 (4mm).

Rib Pat: K2, P2 Rib.

Garter st: Knit every row.

Stockinette st (St st): Knit on RS rows, purl on WS rows.

Herringbone St: multiple of 8 sts + 1 + 2 selvage sts. 1 raised k st = insert LH needle into strand between st 3 rows below and k this strand tog with st on LH needle through the back loops.

Rows 1, 2, 6 and 10: With black, knit.

Rows 3, 4 and 8: With off white, knit.

Row 5: With black: K3, 1 raised k st, *k3, 1 raised k st; rep from *, end k3.

Row 7: With off white: K2, *1 raised k st, k2, 1 raised k st, k2, 1 raised k st, k1; rep from *, end k1.

Row 9: With black: K4, *1 raised k st, k1, 1 raised k st, k2, 1 raised k st, k2; rep from *, end 1 raised k st, k1, 1 raised k st, k4. Rep rows 5-10 for Herringbone st.

Pocket Linings (Make 2): With black and size US 10 (6mm) needles cast on 22 sts and work in St st for 4"/10 cm, place sts on a holder.

Gauge:

Herringbone St with US 10 1/2 (7mm) needles: 16 sts and 17 rows = 4 x 4"/10 x 10 cm.

Back: With US 10 1/2 (7mm) needles and black, cast on 91 sts and work in Herringbone st, beg with Row 3, until piece measures 19 1/2"/50 cm from beg. Work armhole shaping as foll: Bind off 8 sts at beg of next 2 rows = 75 sts. Work even until armhole measures 7"/18 cm. Bind off 27 sts at beg of next 2 rows for shoulder, place center 21 sts on a holder.

Left Front: With black and US 10 (6mm) needles cast on 35 sts and knit 3 rows. Change to US 10 1/2 (7 mm) needles and work in Herringbone st, beg with Row 3, until piece measures approx 5 3/4"/14.5 cm from beg, end with a RS row.

Next row (WS): Work 9 sts, place next 18 sts on a holder, then p 22 sts of pocket lining, work to end of row. On next RS row, cont Herringbone st over all sts, and over the pocket lining sts, dec 4 sts evenly. Work even until piece measures 19 1/2"/50 cm from beg. Work armhole shaping as foll: Bind off 8 sts at beg of next RS row = 27 sts. Work even until armhole measures 7"/18 cm. Bind off all sts. 

Right Front: Work to correspond to left front, reversing shaping.

Sleeves: With black and size US 10 (6mm) needles cast on 43 sts and knit 3 rows. Change to US 10 1/2 (7mm) needles and work in Herringbone st, beg with row 3. Work even until piece measures 7"/18 cm from beg. Inc 1 st each side on next row, then every 16th row 5 times = 55 sts, and work inc sts into garter st and alternating 2 rows black and 2 rows off white. Work even until sleeve measures 21"/53 cm from beg. Bind off sts.

Belt: With black and size US 10 (6mm) needles, cast on 12 sts and work in Rib Pat for approx 59"/150 cm from beg. Bind off. 

Finishing: Sew shoulder seams. For the front borders, with RS facing, circular needle and black, pick up and k 131 sts evenly along right front edge, 24 sts along back neck and 131 sts along left front edge = 286 sts. Work in Rib Pat for 1 1/2"/4 cm. Place first and last 102 sts on holder and cont in Rib Pat over center 82 sts for collar for another 4"/10 cm, then bind off. Work separately over the 102 sts each side in Rib Pat for another 1 1/2"/4 cm, then bind off.

For the pocket borders, sl sts from pocket holders to size US 10 (6mm) needles and with black, knit 2 rows, then bind off sts purlwise on next row. Sew short sides of border to front, then sew pocket linings in place to WS. With center of bound-off sts of sleeves at shoulder seam, sew top of sleeve to front and back armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams. For the belt loop, with crochet hook join a double strand of black at approx 12 1/2"/32 cm from lower edge, chain 10, then sl st into side seam at approx 2"/5 cm above where yarn was joined.
