The perfect foldover knitted clutch, worked in a sturdy plant-based fiber, sports an interior pocket and magnetic snaps.

12" wide and 7" tall, closed Yarn Universal

Yarn

Nettle Lana (70% organic wool, 30% nettle; 98 yd [90 m]/50 g):

• #105 alloy, 3 skeins

Gauge 25 sts and 48 rows = 4" in Stamen patt on larger needles 

Tools

• Size 7 (4.5 mm) needles

• Size 5 (3.75 mm): two double-pointed needles (dpn)

• Tapestry needle

• Two size 4 snaps

Notes

This clutch is worked flat, blocked, and then the side seams are sewn. An applied I-cord edging is worked around the opening and flap. The pocket is worked separately and sewn on.

Stitches

Stamen Pattern: (odd number of sts)

Row 1 (RS) Knit.

Row 2 (WS) *K1, sl 1 pwise wyb; rep from * to last st, k1.

Row 3 Knit.

Row 4 K2, *sl 1 pwise wyb, k1; rep from * to last st, k1.

Rep Rows 1-4 for patt.

Clutch

With larger needles and using the backward-loop method, CO 75 sts. Work in Stamen patt (see Stitches) until piece measures 12" from CO, ending with a WS row.

Shape flap:

Dec row (RS) K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1—2 sts dec'd. Cont in patt, rep Dec row every 4th row 12 more times — 49 sts rem. With WS facing, BO all sts kwise.

Pocket

With larger needles and using the backward-loop method, CO 27 sts. Work in Stamen patt until piece measures 1 1/2" from CO, ending with a WS row.

Dec row (RS) K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1-2 sts dec'd. Cont in patt, rep Dec row every 4th row once more, then every RS row 3 times — 17 sts rem. With WS facing, BO all sts kwise.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block clutch to 12" wide, 13" tall to flap shaping, and 4" tall flap. Fold clutch with WS tog so that CO edge is 6" from fold. Sew side seams. With dpn and RS of clutch front facing, beg at top of clutch front, 1" in from right corner, work applied I-cord along top of clutch and perimeter of flap as foll: CO 3 sts. ** *Pick up and knit 1 st from edge, slide sts to opposite end of needle, k2, k2tog tbl; rep from * to corner, work applied I-cord into corner st 3 times; rep from ** around clutch opening. Graft ends of I-cord tog. With dpn and RS facing, work applied I-cord along CO edge of pocket. BO all sts. Sew pocket to center of clutch front, 1/2" below CO edge. Sew male halves of snaps to WS of flap at corners of BO edge. Sew female halves of snaps to front of clutch opposite male halves.
