Measurements

Approximately 15cm/6in long, without button loop.

Materials

1 x 100g (400m) ball of DMC Petra 5 (100% cotton) in each of Turquoise 53845 (A) and Orange 5922 (B) for Zigzag Braid, Lilac 5211 (A), Purple 53837 (B) and Bright Pink 53805 (C) for Woven Braid*.

Size 2.00 crochet hook.

One button and short length of ribbon for each.

Abbreviations

Ch, chain; chsp, chain space; dc, double crochet; htr, half treble; tr, treble; slst, slip stitch.

Zigzag braid

This is the simpler of the two designs. Treble groups are pulled in by the edging so that they appear to zigzag.

With 2.00 hook and A, make 5ch.

1st row: 3tr in 3rd ch from hook, 1ch, miss 1ch, 1tr in last ch.

2nd row: 2ch, 3tr in chsp, 1ch, 1tr in 2nd of 2ch.

Repeat 2nd row, 16 times more. Fasten off.

Edging

Right side facing and using 2.00 hook, join B in centre of last row. Make 8ch for loop, then 6dc in chsp, [5dc in next chsp along side] 8 times, 6dc around tr group at end, 6dc in next chsp, [5dc in next chsp along side] 8 times, 6dc around tr group, lOdc in ch loop. Fasten off.

To make up

Pin out and press. Attach a small button at the opposite end to the loop and tie ribbon around it.

Woven braid

Two lengths of chevrons are crossed and then held in place with an edging.

First chevron band

With 2.00 hook and A, make 52ch (if counting these is difficult make a few extra and undo these afterwards), 1htr in 3rd ch from hook (counts as 2htr), 1htr in each of next 4ch, * 1ch, 1htr in each of next 6ch, miss lch, 1htr in each of next 6ch; repeat from * twice more, 1ch, 1htr in each of last 6ch. Fasten off.

Second chevron band

With 2.00 hook and B, make 52ch.

1htr in 3rd ch from hook (counts as 2htr), 1htr in each of next 5ch, * miss 1ch, 1htr in each of next 6ch, 1ch, 1htr in each of next 6ch; repeat from * twice more, miss lch, 1htr in each of last 5ch. Fasten off.

Edging

Pinning out the points of each chevron (a point is the 1-chsp or 1 missed ch at 6-dc intervals), press both chevron bands. Cross the bands by taking first band over and under second band along their length, tacking them together, if necessary.

1st round: Right side facing and using 2.00 hook, join C yarn with a slst in centre of end of 2nd band at back, [4ch, slst in 1-ch point of 1st band, 4ch, slst in 1-ch point of 2nd band] 3 times, 4ch, slst in 1-ch point of 1st band, 4ch, slst in centre of end of 2nd band, 4ch, along 2nd side slst in centre of end of 1st band, [4ch, slst in 1-ch point of 2nd band, 4ch, slst in 1-ch point of 1st band] 3 times, 4ch, slst in 1-ch point of 2nd band, 4ch, slst in end of 1st band, 4ch, slst in first slst.

2nd round: 6dc in each chsp, slst in first dc, turn, slst in first 3dc, make 8ch for loop (this loop can be covered with dc if required). Fasten off.

To make up

Press, then attach button at opposite end to the loop and tie ribbon around it.
