Inspired by a bag from the 1940s, this little purse is quick to make and uses only a single skein of sparkly yarn for a hint of drama. Want to change the size? It's easy to increase the diameter of the base, then work the sides as high as you desire.

• 1 skein Boutique Midnight by Red Heart, 65% acrylic, 23% wool, 6% metallic polyester, 6% nylon in color 1936 Misty

• U.S. size I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook, or size required for gauge

• Yarn needle

• 1 1/4" buttons, 2 total

Gauge

Rnds 1-3 = 2" (5cm) in sc

BAG

Base

Ch 4. Join with sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 12 sc in ring, join with a sl st in first st. (12 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, *2 sc in same st; rep from * around, join. (24 sc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc around, join.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, *2 sc in same st, sc in next st; rep from * around, join. (36 sc)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc around, join.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, *2 sc in same st, sc 1 in next 2 sts; rep from * around, join. (48 sc)

Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc around, join.

Note: If a larger base is desired, continue in pattern, working 1 more st between increases every other round.

Next (turning) rnd: Ch 1, sc 1 in blo of each st around, join.

Sides

Rnd 1: Ch 2, hdc 1 in each sc around, join.

Rep last rnd until piece measures 6" from turning rnd or desired height.

Next (buttonhole) rnd: Hdc 24, ch 6, hdc 1 in next st and each rem st around, join. Fasten off. Cut yarn.

Handle

Lay bag flat with buttonhole at right edge. Join yarn 8 sts from buttonhole (strap is worked over center 8 sts on this side).

Next row: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc 1 in next 7 sts, turn. (8 hdc)

Rep last row until handle measures 12" or desired length.

Next (buttonhole) row: Ch 2, hdc 1 in next 3 sts, ch 6, hdc 1 in next st and each rem st to end. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Weave in ends. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes; one to close bag and other to fasten end of strap in place.
