WE LOVE the homespun, 1930s look of this cabled cardigan by Martin Storey. Its chunky texture of diamond cables works perfectly in Rowan’s Pure Wool Aran yarn, and details such as the lined pockets and shallow set-in sleeves add to the vintage feel. The Pure Wool Aran yarn is arobust, machine-washable wool that’s ideal for winter garments which will get lots of wear. It’s available in 18 shades, both muted and bright.

TENSION

231/2 sts and 26 rows to 10cm measured over patt using 4.5mm needles

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS

Cr3R: Slip next st onto cable needle and hold at back of work, K2, then P1 from cable needle.

Cr3L: Slip next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work, P1, then K2 from cable needle.

BACK

Using 4mm needles cast on 122 (134:150: 162:178) sts.

Row 1 (RS): *K2, P2, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.

Row 2: *P2, K2, rep from * to last 2 sts, P2.

These 2 rows form rib.

Work in rib for a further 40 rows, inc 1 (1:0:1:1) st at each end of last of these rows, ending with RS facing for next row. 124 (136:150:164:180) sts.

Change to 4.5mm needles. Beg and ending rows as indicated and repeating the 20 row patt rep throughout, now work in patt from chart as follows:

Cont straight until Back meas 47 (48:49:50: 51) cm, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Keeping patt correct, cast off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 116 (128:142:156:172) sts. Dec 1 st at each end of next and foil 4 alt rows. 106 (118:132:146:162) sts. Cont straight until armhole meas 21 (22:23:24:25) cm, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE SHOULDERS AND BACK NECK

Next row (RS): Cast off 11 (13:15:17:20) sts, patt until there are 26 (30:34:39:43) sts on right needle and turn, leaving rem sts on a holder.

Work each side of neck separately. Dec 1 st at beg of next row. Cast off 11 (13:15:18:20) sts at beg and dec 1 st at end of next row, then dec 1 st at beg of foil row. Cast off rem 12 (14:16:18:20) sts. With RS facing, rejoin yarn to rem sts, cast off centre 32 (32:34:34:36) sts and patt to end. Complete to match first side, reversing shapings.

POCKET LINING (Make 2)

Using 4.5mm needles cast on 30 (30:30:34:34) sts. Beg with row 2 of rib as given for Back, work 39 rows in rib, ending with WS facing for next row. Leave rem sts on a holder.

LEFT FRONT

Using 4mm needles cast on 55 (63:71:75:83) sts.

Row 1 (RS): *K2, P2, rep from * to last 3 sts, K3.

Row2: P3, *K2, P2, rep from * to end. These 2 rows form rib. Work in rib for a further 36 rows, ending with RS facing for next row.

PLACE POCKET

Next row (RS): Rib 15 (23:31:31:39), cast off next 30 (30:30:34:34) sts, rib to end.

Next row: Rib 10, rib across 30 (30:30:34:34) sts left on a holder for first pocket lining, rib to end. Work in rib for a further 2 rows, inc 3 (1:0:3:3) sts evenly across last of these rows, ending with RS facing for next row. 58 (64:71:78:86) sts. Change to 4.5mm needles. Beg and ending rows as indicated and repeating the 20 row patt rep throughout, now work in patt from chart as follows:

Cont until 20 (16:16:14:14) rows less have been worked than on Back to beg of armhole shaping, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE FRONTSLOPE

Keeping patt correct, dec 1 st at end of next and 4 (3:3:3:3) foil 4th rows. 53(60:67:74:82) sts. Work 3 (3:3:1:1) rows more, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE ARMHOLE

Cast off 4 sts at beg and dec 1 (1:1:0:0) st at end of next row. 48 (55:62:70:78) sts. Work 1 row. Dec 1 st at armhole edge of next and 4 foil alt rows and AT SAME TIME dec 1 st at neck edge of 3rd (3rd:3rd:next:next) and 1 (1:1:2:2) foil 4th rows. 41 (48:55:62:70) sts. Dec 1 st at neck edge only on 2nd (2nd:2nd:4th:4th) and 1 (2:4:3:5) foil 4th rows, then on 5 (5:4:5:4) foil 6th rows. 34 (40:46:53:60) sts.

Cont straight until Left Front matches Back to beg of shoulder shaping, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE SHOULDER

Cast off 11 (13:15:17:20) sts at beg of next row and 11 (13:15:18:20) sts at beg of foil alt row. Work 1 row. Cast offrem 12 (14:16:18:20) sts.

RIGHT FRONT

Using 4mm needles cast on 55 (63:71:75:83) sts.

Row 1 (RS): K3, *P2, K2, rep from * to end.

Row 2: *P2, K2, rep from * to last 3 sts, P3. These 2 rows form rib. Work in rib for a further 36 rows, ending with RS facing for next row.

PLACE POCKET

Next row (RS): Rib 10, cast off next 30(30:30:34:34) sts, rib to end.

Next row: Rib 15 (23:31:31:39), rib across 30 (30:30:34:34) sts left on a holder for second pocket lining, rib to end. Work in rib for a further 2 rows, inc 3 (l:0:3:3) sts evenly across last ofthese rows, ending with RS facing for next row. 58 (64:71:75:86) sts. Complete to match Left Front, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES

Using 4mm needles cast on 54 (54:58:58: 62) sts. Work in rib as given for Back, shaping sides by inc 1 st at each end of 7th and foll 6th row, working inc sts in rib. 58(58:62:62:66) sts.

Work in rib for a further 7 rows, inc 0 (1:0:0:0) st at each end of last of these rows, ending with RS facing for next row. 58 (60:62:62:66) sts.

Change to 4.5mm needles. Beg and ending rows as indicated and repeating the 20 row patt rep throughout, now work in patt from chart as folls:

Inc 1 st at each end of 5th (5th:5th:3rd:3rd) and every foil 4th (4th:4th:alt:alt) row to 92 (102:108:70:78) sts, then on every foll 6th (6th: -:4th:4th) row until there are 98 (104:-:112:118) sts, working inc sts in patt. Cont straight until Sleeve meas 45 (46:47: 47:47) cm, ending with RS facing for next row.

SHAPE TOP

Keeping patt correct, cast off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 90(96:100:104:110) sts. Dec 1 st at each end of next and foll 4 alt rows, then on foll row. Cast off rem 78 (84:88:92:98) sts.

MAKING UP

Block pieces carefully, following any yarn care instructions on the ball band. Join both shoulder seams using back stitch, or mattress stitch if preferred.

BUTTON BAND

Using 4mm needles cast on 9 sts.

Row 1 (RS): (K1, P1) 4 times, K1.

Row 2: K2, (P1, K1) 3 times, K1. These 2 rows form rib. Cont in rib until button band, when slightly stretched, fits up entire front opening edge, up left front slope and across to centre back neck, ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off in rib. Slip stitch band in place. Mark positions for 5 buttons on this band - first button to come 21/2cm up from lower edge, last button to come just below beg of front slope shaping, and remaining 3 buttons evenly spaced between.

BUTTONHOLE BAND

Work to match button band, with the addition of 5 buttonholes worked to correspond with positions marked for buttons as folls:

Buttonhole row (RS): Rib 3, cast off 2 sts (to make a buttonhole - cast on 2 sts over these cast- off sts on next row), rib to end. Slip stitch this band in place, joining cast- off ends of bands at centre back neck.

Join side seams. Set in sleeves using the shallow set-in method method: place centre of cast-off edge of sleeve to shoulder seam. Match decreases at beg of armhole shaping to decreases at top of sleeve. Sew sleeve head into armhole, easing in shapings.
