TENSION
22 sts & 30 rows to 10cm (4in) over st st using 3.5mm needles.
Use larger or smaller needles if necessary to obtain correct tension.
BACK
Using 3mm needles cast on 102[110:118:126:138] sts.

Using 3mm needles cast on 54[54:58:58:62] sts. Work in 2/2 rib as for Back until work meas 7cm (2.75in) (24 rows), decreasing 1 st on the final row for sizes S[L:XXL] and increasing 1 st for sizes [M:XL]. 53[55:57:59:61] sts.
Change to 3.5mm needles and starting with a knit row cont in st st for 12[10:10:8:8] rows.
Next row (RS - inc): K2, inc 1, k to last 2 sts, inc 1, k2.
Rep the inc row on every foll 12th[10th:10th:8th:8th] row 3[10:6:13:4] times, then on every foll 10th[0-8th-0-6th] row 6[0-5-0-12] times. 73(77:81:87:95] sts.
Cont without shaping until work meas 47cm (18.5in) (144 rows) total.
Shape top of sleeve
Cast at beg of every row: 3 sts 2[2:2:2:4] times, 2 sts twice, 1 st 28(26:30:46:42] times, 2 sts 4[4:4:2:2] times, 3 sts 2[4:4:2:4] times. Cast off rem 21 sts.
NECK OPENING BORDERS
Border no. 1
Using 3mm needles cast on 32 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K3, *p2, k2*, rep from * to * ending with k3 instead of k2.
Row 2: P3, *k2, p2*, rep from * to * ending with p3 instead of p2.
Rep rows 1 and 2 until work meas 3.5cm (1.5in) (12 rows), leave sts on a spare needle.
Border no. 2
Using 3mm needles cast on 32 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K3, *p2, k2*; rep from * to * ending with k3 instead of k2.
Row 2: P3, *k2, p2*, rep from * to * ending with p3 instead of p2.
Rep rows 1 and 2 twice more.
Row 7 (buttonhole row): K3, p2, k2, castoff 2 sts, rib 16 sts, cast off 2 sts, rib to end.
Row 8: Work in rib patt as set casting on 2 sts over each set of 2 cast-off sts.
Work 4 more rows in rib, leave sts on a spare needle.
COLLAR
Using 3mm needles cast on 122[126:130:138:142] sts. Work in 2/2 rib as for Back until collar meas 16cm (6.25in) (54 rows) total, leave sts on a spare needle.
TO FINISH OFF
Join shoulder seams. Using back stitch graft the borders to each side of the neck opening. Graft the collar around neck edge and fold in half to the WS, stitch the end seams. Set sleeves into armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams of the sweater. Secure and weave in all ends.
Buttonhole loop
Using the 3.5mm crochet hook and 2 strands of yarn held together make an 8 st chain, fasten off. Sew the loop to the edge of the collar (see photo). Sew on the buttons to correspond with the buttonholes and loop.
