YOU WILL NEED

Sirdar Harrap Tweed DK 40% nylon, 30% wool, 24% acrylic, 6% viscose (approx 170m per 50g)

9[10:10:10:11:11]x 50g balls 103 Hepworth 

1 pair each 3.25mm and 4mm needles

1 set of four 3.25mm needles

1 stitch holder

Note: Yarn amounts given are based on average requirements and are approximate.

TENSION

26 sts and 28 rows to 10cm over patt using 4mm needles.

Use larger or smaller needles if necessary to obtain correct tension.

ABBREVIATIONS

tw3 = slip next 2 sts purlways, k1, pass second st on right needle over first st and k into back of it, now slip third st on right needle over first 2 sts and k into back of it.  

FRONT

Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 110[117:124:131:138:145] sts.

Row 1 (RS): P2, k1, p2, (k2, p2, k1, p2) to end.

Row 2: K2, p1, k2, (p2, k2, p1, k2) to end.

Rep these 2 rib rows for 7cm (2.75in), ending after Row 2.

Next row: P7[6:6:5:5:4], (inc purlways in next st, p7) 12[13:14:15:16:17] times, inc in nextst, p to end. 123[131:139:147:155:163] sts.

Change to 4mm needles and patt:

Row 1 (RS): P2, (tw3, p1) to last st, p1.

Row 2: K2, (p3, k1) to last st, k1.

Row 3: P2, (k3, p1) to last st, p1.

Rows 4 to 5: As Rows 2 to 3.

Row 6: Purl.

Row 7: P4, (tw3, p1) to last 3 sts, p3.

Row 8: K4, (p3, kl) to last 3 sts, k3.

Row 9: P4, (k3, p1) to last 3 sts, p3.

Rows 10 to 11: As Rows 8 to 9.

Row 12: Purl.

These 12 rows set patt.

Cont in patt until work meas 41cm (16in) from cast-on edge, measured through centre of work, ending after a WS row.

Shape raglan

Rows 1 to 2: Cast off 4[5:5:6:6:7] sts, work to end. 115[121:129:135:143:149] sts.

Row 3: K1, skpo, patt to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.

Row 4: P1, p2tog, patt to last 3 sts, p2tog tbl, p1.

Row 5: K1, skpo, patt to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. 109 [115:123:129:137:143] sts. 

Row 6: P2, patt to last 2 sts, p2.

Rep last 4 rows 5[5:6:7:9:9] times more. 79(85:87:87:83:89] sts **

Now rep Rows 5 to 6 only until 61[63:67:69:73:75] sts rem, ending after Row 6.

Shape neck

Next row (RS): K1, skpo, patt 15[15:16:16:17:17], turn. Cont on this group of sts for left half of neck. Work 5 rows, dec 1 st at neck edge on every row and dec on RS rows as before at raglan edge. 10[10:11:11:12:12] sts.

Cont dec at raglan edge only on every RS row until 2 sts rem. Work 1 row. Cast off.

With RS facing, sl next 25[27:29:31:33:35] sts on a holder and leave. Neatly rejoin yarn to rem sts and patt to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Complete to match left half of neck.

BACK

Work as Front to **.

Now rep Rows 5-6 only until 39(41:43:45:47:49] sts rem, ending after Row 6. Cast off loosely.

SLEEVES

Using 3.25mm needles, cast on 47[47:47:54:54:54] sts.

Work in rib as on Front for 7cm (2.75in), ending after Row 1.

Next row: Purl inc 4[4:8:1:5:5] sts evenly across. 51(51:55:55:59:59] sts.

Change to 4mm needles and work 2 rows in patt as on Back.

Cont in patt to match Front and Back, shaping Sleeve by inc 1 st at each end of next row, then on every foll 4th[4th:4th:alt:alt:alt] row until there are 81 [93:97:61:65:73] sts, then on every foll 6th[6th:6th:4th:4th:4th] row until there are 95[99:103:109:113:117] sts, taking extra sts into patt.

Cont straight until Sleeve meas approx 47[47:47:48:48:48]cm (18.5[18.5:18.5:19:19:19]in) from beg, ending after same row of patt as on Front and Back before shaping raglan.

Shape raglan

Rows 1 to 6: As on Front.

Rep last 4 rows 7[6:6:7:8:7] times more. 39[47:51:49:47:55] sts.

Now rep Rows 5 to 6 only until 7 sts rem, ending after a Row 6. Cast off loosely.

NECKBAND

First join raglans using mattress stitch or a fine backstitch.

Using 3.25mm dpns, with RS facing, pick up and k31[33:35:37:39:41] sts evenly from Back of neck, 5 sts from Left Sleeve, 16[16:18:18:19:19] sts evenly down left side of neck, k across 25[27:29:31:33:35] sts on holder dec 4 sts evenly, pick up and k16[16:18:18:19:19] sts evenly up right side of neck, and 5 sts from right Sleeve. 94[98:106:110:116:120] sts.

Cont in rnds:

Rnds 1 to 5: Knit.

Rnd 6: Purl, (thus forming a ridge for hem).

Rnds 7 to 10: Knit.

Cast off loosely using a 4mm needle.

TO FINISH OFF

Fold neckband in half to WS and hem in place. Join side and Sleeve seams. Darn in loose ends.
