Men's pullover: free knitting pattern



Racing pullover with bold stripes. This slim-fit pullover gets its look from the ribbed knit. A classic design with epaulet sleeves.

Size: 48/50, 52/54 and 56/58.

Instructions are for first size. Figures in parentheses refer to larger sizes. When only one figure is given, it applies to all sizes.

Materials: Schoppel Wolle "Reggae" (100% Merino wool, approx. 100 m/50 g): 550 (600-650) g in Amethyst, col 3683, 100 g in Marine, col 4201, and 50 g in Ivory, col 989; size 5 mm Prym needles; size 5 mm circular needle, 40 cm/16" long.

Rib pattern: K2, p2.

Full-fashion decreases: At beg of RS row, selvedge st, k1, SKP (sl1 kwise, k1, psso); at end of RS row, work to last 4 sts, k2tog, k1, selvedge st.

Tension: 20 sts and 23 rows = 10 x 10 cm/4" x 4" in rib pat.

Back: With Amethyst, cast on 108 (116-124) sts. Next WS row: Selvedge st, * k2, p2; rep from * to last 3 sts, k2, selvedge st. Work in rib pat as established until back measures 45 cm/17 3/4" = 103 rows from cast-on. Cont in rib pat and work stripes as foll: Work 20 rows with Marine, 12 rows with Amethyst, 8 rows with Ivory. Work remaining back with Amethyst.

At same time, when back measures 53 cm/21" = 121 rows from cast-on, shape armholes as foll: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of next 2 (4-6) rows. Working full-fashion decs, dec 1 st at beg and end of next 5 (7-9) RS rows = 88 sts. Cont in rib pat until armhole measures 16 (17-18) cm/6 1/4" (6 3/4"-7") = 36 (40-42) rows from beg. 

Shape shoulders: Bind off 10 sts at each shoulder edge 3 times = 28 sts remain for collar. Cont in rib pat across 28 collar sts for 7 cm/2 3/4", then sl sts to holder.

Front: Work as for back until armhole measures 15 (16-17) cm/6" (6 1/4"-6 3/4") = 34 (36-40) rows from beg. Shape neck: Sl center 20 sts to holder. Working each side separately, sl 4 sts at each neck edge to holder, then sl 2 sts every other row twice to holder = 26 sts remain for each shoulder.

At same time, when armhole measures 16 (17-18) cm/6 1/4" (6 3/4"-7")=36 (40-42) rows from beg, shape shoulders as foll: Bind off 8 sts at each shoulder edge once, then 9 sts twice. Sl held front neck sts back to working needle. Cont in rib pat across 36 front neck sts for 7 cm/2 3/4" and work shaping as foll: Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows. * Work 2 rows even. Bind off 1 st at beg of next 2 rows. Repeat from * 3 times = 24 sts. Sl sts to holder. 

Sleeves: With Amethyst, cast on 48 sts. Next WS row: Selvedge st, * k2, p2; rep from * to last 3 sts, k2, selvedge st. Work in rib pat as established and shape sleeve as foll: Inc 1 st at beg and end of 8th row from cast-on, then alternately every 8th and 10th row (then every foll 8th row - then alternately every 6th and 8th row) 11 (13-15) times = 72 (76-80) sts.

At same time, when sleeve measures 46 cm/ 18" = 105 rows from cast-on, work 20 rows with Marine, 12 rows with Amethyst, 8 rows with Ivory, then remainder of sleeve with Amethyst. At same time, when sleeve measures 54 cm/21 1/4" = 123 rows from cast-on, shape sleeve cap as foll: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of next 2 (4-6) rows. Working full-fashion decs, dec 1 st at beg and end of next 15 RS rows. Next, bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows = 20 sts remain for sleeve extension. Cont in rib pat across 20 sleeve extension sts for 21 cm/8 1/4", then sl sts to holder. 

Finishing: Block pieces, dampen, and let dry. Sew in sleeves, sewing sleeve extensions between back and front collar, with upper edges flush. Bind off all sts of collar and sleeves (from holders), in 1 rnd. Sew side and sleeve seams.
