Our winter-perfect cable knit in chestnut brown will be his wardrobe staple for chilly days.

Materials

17 (21) (21) (25) 50g of Yeoman Langatto Lapland DK (50% merino wool, 50% acrylic) in Brown. Other colours are available. Pair of 4 1/2mm (No. 7) knitting needles; cable needle.

Tension

19 stitches and 23 rows, to 10 x 10cm, over reverse stocking stitch (p on right side and k on wrong side), 12-stitch panel measures 6cm across, using 4 1/2mm needles.

Back

With 4 1/2mm needles, cast on 110 (122) (134) (146) sts.

2nd row: P2, k1, p1, k1, p2, [k6 (8) (10) (12), p2, k1, p1, k1, p2, k1, p1, k1, p2] 5 times, k6 (8) (10) (12), p2, k1, p1, k1, p2. These 2 rows form pattern. Pattern another 98 (100) (102) (104) rows.

Shape armholes: Keeping pattern correct, cast off 3 (4) (5) (6) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of next 5 rows and 3 (4) (5) (6) following alternate rows - 88 (96) (104) (112) sts. Pattern another 41 (43) (45) (47) rows.

Shape shoulders:

Next row: Cast off 25 (27) (29) (31) sts, pattern to last 25 (27) (29) (31) sts, cast off last 25 (27) (29) (31) sts. Leave centre 38 (42) (46) (50) sts on a st holder.

Front

With 4 1/2mm needles, cast on 110 (122) (134) (146) sts.

1st row: K3, p1, k3, [p6 (8) (10) (12), k3, p1, k4, p1, k3] 5 times, p6 (8) (10) (12), k3, p1, k3. 

2nd row: P2, k1, p1, k1, p2, [k6 (8) (10) (12), p2, k1, p1, k1, p2, k1, p1, k1, p2] 5 times, k6 (8) (10) (12), p2, k1, p1, k1, p2.

3rd to 12th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows, 5 times.

13th row: K3, p1, k3, * p6 (8) (10) (12), k3, p1, k4, p1, k3 *, repeat from * to * once, p6 (8) (10) (12), sl next 5 sts onto cable needle and leave at back, k3, p1, k3, then place the last 3 sts on cable needle back onto left needle, bring cable needle holding the 2k sts to front, k1, p1, k1 from left needle, then k2 from cable needle, work from * to * twice, p6 (8) (10) (12), k3, p1, k3.

14th row: As 2nd row.

15th to 20th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows, 3 times. These 20 rows form pattern. Pattern another 80 (82) (84) (86) rows.

Shape armholes: Keeping pattern correct, cast off 3 (4) (5) (6) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of next 5 rows and 3 (4) (5) (6) following alternate rows - 88 (96) (104) (112) sts. Pattern another 27 rows.

Shape neck:

Next row: Pattern 32 (34) (36) (38), turn and work on these sts only for left side neck.

Left side neck: Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 7 rows - 25 (27) (29) (31) sts. Pattern 6 (8) (10) (12) rows. Cast off.

Sleeves (both alike)

2nd row: K1, p2, [k1, p1, k1, p2] twice, [k6 (8) (10) (12), p2, k1, p1, k1, p2, k1, p1, k1, p2] twice, k1. These 2 rows form pattern. Pattern another 8 rows. Working extra sts into pattern as they occur, inc 1 st at each end of next row and 11 (13) (15) (17) following 8th (7th) (6th) (6th) rows - 74 (82) (90) (98) sts. Pattern another 9 (8) (15) (9) rows.

Neckband

Join right shoulder seam. To make up

Join left shoulder and neckband seam. Fold neckband in half to wrong side and slip stitch in place. Set in sleeves, then join side and sleeve seams.
