Border sts:
RS rows: At beg of row, sl the 1st and 2nd sts purlwise with yarn at back of work and pull yarn tightly; at end of row, k the last 2 sts.
WS rows: At beg of row sl the 1st and 2nd sts purlwise with yarn at front of work and pull yarn tightly; at end of row, p the last 2 sts.
Gauges:
Cable Pat with US 10 1/2 (7mm) needles: 21 sts and 19 rows = 4 x 4"/10 x 10 cm.
Rib Pat with US 10 1/2 (7mm) needles: 21 sts and 20 rows (measured unstretched) = 4 x 4"/10 x 10 cm, 17 sts and 20 rows (measured slightly stretched) = 4 x 4"/10 x10 cm.
Back: With US 10 1/2 (7mm) needles, cast on 114 sts and k 1 row on WS. Work in pats as foll: k1 (selvage st), 9 sts Rib Pat (= k1, p2, k2, p2, k2), 42 sts Cable Pat A, 10 sts Rib Pat (beg with k2), 42 sts Cable Pat B, 9 sts Rib Pat (= k2, p2, k2, p2, k1), k1 (selvage st), Cont in pats as established until piece measures 16"/41 cm from beg. For armhole shaping, bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 6 times = 96 sts. Work even until armhole measures 9"/23 cm. For the shoulder shaping bind off 9 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 10 sts at beg of next 4 rows. When piece measures 26"/66cm from beg, bind off rem 38 sts.
Right Front: With US 10 1/2 (7mm) needles cast on 63 sts and k 1 row on WS. Work in pats as foll: 11 sts border pat (= 2 border sts, k1, p2, k2, p2, k2), 42 sts Cable Pat B, 9 sts Rib Pat (beg with k2, end k1) k1 (selvage st). Cont in pats as established until piece measures 13 3/4"/35 cm from beg.
Work lapel as foll: 9 sts border pat, M1 (insert LH needle into horizontal strand between last st worked and next st on needle, k or p st through back lp of strand to inc t st into Rib Pat), k1, SKP, 41 sts Cable Pat B, 9 sts Rib Pat, k1 (selvage st). Cont to inc and dec 1 st as before every 2nd row 13 times more, then work inc only every 2nd row 10 times. At the same time, work armhole and shoulder shaping at side edge (beg of WS rows or end of RS rows) same as back. When piece measures 23"/58 cm from beg, bind off all border/lapel sts and cont on rem sts until same length as back. Bind off.
Left Front: Work to correspond to right front, reversing all shaping and working Cable Pat A. Work 4 buttonholes on the front ribbed border (= yo, k2tog for buttonhole), with the 1 st one at 1 1/4"/3 cm from lower edge and the others spaced approx 4"/10 cm apart.
Sleeves: With US 10 1/2 (7mm) needles, cast on 56 sts and knit 1 row on WS. Then work in pats as foll: k1 (selvage st), k1, 52 sts Cable Pat A = 26 sts from arrow A - B, then 26 sts in reverse, k1, k1 (seivage st). Cont in pats as established until piece measures 4 3/4"/12 cm from beg. For the sleeve shaping inc 1 st each side on next row, then every 6th row 4 times and every 4th row 13 times = 92 sts, working the first 9 incs in Cable Pat, and the rem incs in Rib Pat, beg with k2. Work even until piece measures 21"/53 cm from beg. For the cap shaping, bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every 2nd row 6 times = 74 sts. When piece measures approx 23"/58 cm from beg, bind off.
Right Front Pocket: With US 10 1/2 (7mm) needles, cast on 29 sts and knit 1 row on WS. Work in Cable Pat B over sts 14 - 42. Work even until piece measures approx 6"/15 cm from beg, end with a RS row. Bind off sts knitwise, on WS. Work Left Front Pocket in same way, but work Chart A from sts 1 - 29.
Finishing: Sew shoulder seams. For the collar, with RS facing and circular needle pick up and k sts as foll: 10 sts along last bound-off sts of right front lapel, 10 sts along straight edge of right front, 22 sts along back neck, 10 sts along straight edge of left front and 10 sts along left front lapel = 62 sts. Work in Rib Pat, and on the first row, inc 1 st in each st along back neck = 84 sts. Cont in rib until collar measures 4 3/4"/12 cm. Bind off. Set in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew pockets to fronts at approx 1 1/4"/3 cm from lower edge. Sew on buttons..
