Measurements

Approximately 76 x 76cm/30 x 30in.

Materials

8 x 50g (85m) balls of Rowan Handknit DK Cotton (100% cotton) in Gooseberry (219) and 2 balls in each of Sugar (303), Flamingo (368), Sea Foam (352) and Delphinium (334).

Size 4.00 crochet hook; a 76 x 76cm cushion pad.

Tension 

Each square measures approximately 15 x 15cm, using 4.00 hook.

Ch, chain; st, stitch; htr, half treble.

Front

Multi-coloured squares

(make 25 in chosen colourways).

1st row: With 4.00 hook and first shade, make 8ch, 1htr in 3rd ch from hook (counts as 1htr), 1htr in each of next 5ch, turn - 6htr.

2nd and 3rd rows: 2ch (does not count as a st throughout instructions), 1htr in each of 6htr, turn.

4th row: 2ch, 1htr in each of next 6htr. Break off first shade. Join in second shade and rotate work clockwise a quarter turn.

5th row: 2ch, work 5htr evenly into row-ends along side edge, 3htr in corner, rotate work clockwise a quarter turn and work 5htr evenly along base edge, turn - 13 sts.

6th row: 2ch, 1htr in each of next 6htr, 3htr in next htr, 1htr in each of next 6htr, turn -15 sts.

7th row: 2ch, 1htr in each of next 7htr, 3htr in next htr, 1htr in each of next 7htr - 17 sts. Break off second shade.

Join in third shade and rotate work clockwise a quarter turn.

8th row: 2ch, work 4htr evenly along next 3 row-ends and 5htr along following 4 row-ends, 3htr in corner, rotate work clockwise a quarter turn and work 5htr along next row and 4htr along next 3 row-ends, turn - 21 sts.

9th row: 2ch, 1htr in each of next 10htr, 3htr in next htr, 1htr in each of next 10htr, turn - 23 sts.

10th row: 2ch, 1htr in each of next 11htr, 3htr in next htr, 1htr in each of next 11htr - 25 sts. Break off third shade.

Join in fourth shade and rotate work clockwise a quarter turn.

11th row: 2ch, work 4htr evenly along next 3 row-ends, 1htr in each of next 8htr, 3htr in next htr, rotate work clockwise a quarter turn and work 1htr in each of next 8htr and 4htr along next 3 row-ends, turn - 27 sts.

12th row: 2ch, 1htr in each of next 13htr, 3htr in next htr, 1htr in each of next 13htr, turn - 29 sts.

13th row: 2ch, 1htr in each of next 14htr, 3htr in next htr, 1htr in each of next 14htr - 31 sts.

Break off fourth shade.

Join in fifth shade and rotate work clockwise a quarter turn.

14th row: 2ch, work 4htr along next 3 row-ends, 1htr in each of next 12htr, 3htr in next htr, rotate work clockwise a quarter turn and work 1htr in each of next 12htr, 4htr along next 3 row-ends, turn - 35 sts.

15th row: 2ch, 1htr in each of next 17htr, 3htr in next htr, 1htr in each of next 17htr, turn -37 sts.

16th row: 2ch, 1htr in each of next 18htr, 3htr in next htr, 1htr in each of next 18htr - 39 sts.

Fasten off and neaten ends.

Using mattress stitch, join together 5 rows each of 5 squares.
