Pattern instructions
You'll need to work up plenty of squares and octagons for this large blanket, but it sure makes for a satisfying project that you can work on a little piece at a time.
Large motif (make 63)
With A, chain 4. Join with sl st to work in the rnd.
Rnd 1: 3 ch (counts as first tr), 15 tr into the ring, join with sl st into the top of the beg 3-ch. 16 tr
Break A.
Rnd 2: Join B in any tr, 3 ch, [1 tr, 1 ch, 2 tr] into the same st, *miss the next tr, [2 tr, 1 ch, 2 tr] into the next tr; rep from * to the last st, miss the next st, sl st into the top of the beg 3-ch. 8 ch-sp
Break B.
Rnd 3: Join C into any ch-sp, 4 ch (counts as 1 tr, 1 ch), tr into the same sp, *4 tr, [1 tr, 1 ch, 1 tr] into the ch-sp; rep from * around to the last 4 sts, 4 tr, sl st into the 3rd ch of the beg 4-ch.
Fasten off and break the yarn. Weave in the ends.
Small motif (make 63)
With D, chain 4. Join with sl st to work in the rnd.
Rnd 1: 2 ch (counts as 1 htr), 11 htr into the ring, join with sl st into the top of the beg 2-ch. 12 htr
Rnd 2: 3 ch (counts as 1 htr, 1 ch), 1 htr into the same st, *2 htr, [1 htr, 1 ch, 1 htr] into the next htr; rep from * to the last 2 sts, 2 htr, sl st into the 2nd ch of the beg 3-ch.
Rnd 3: 2 ch, [1 htr, 1 ch, 1 htr] into the ch-sp, *4 htr, [1 htr, 1 ch, 1 htr] into the ch-sp; rep from * to the last 3 sts, 3 htr, sl st into the top of the beg 3-ch.
Fasten off and break the yarn. Weave in the ends.
Lay out the motifs as shown in the picture. Create 14 rows of 9 motifs by whip¬stitching the edges with A, then join the rows by whip-stitching across.
Border
Join A into the ch-sp on the outside edge of any large motif.
Rnd 1: 1 ch, [1 dc, 1 ch, 1 dc] into the same sp, cont around the blanket, placing 1 dc into each motif edge st and [1 dc, 1 ch, 1 dc] into each large motif edge ch-sp. Join with sl st into the first dc to work in the rnd.
Rnds 2 & 3:1 ch, dc around.
Fasten off and break the yarn.
Finishing: Weave in all the rem ends. Block to the dimensions shown in the schematic.
