Cushion - Free Crochet Pattern
The hexagon granny motif was the starting point for this cushion, with puffs and popcorns adding a pretty three-dimensional texture.
MATERIALS
James C Brett Cotton On, 50% cotton/50% acrylic, 50g/145m/158yds
Yarn A: Coral C06 x 1 ball
Yarn B: Grass CO16 x 1 ball
Yarn C: Mint CO12 x 1 ball
Yarn D: Beige CO4 x 1 ball
Yarn E: Blush CO5 x 1 ball
Yarn F: Turquoise CO10 x 1 ball
Yarn G: Cream CO2 x 3 balls

TENSION
Exact tension is not essential for this project.
MEASUREMENTS
Cushion measures approximately 40cm/153/4in square. Each hexagon measures approximately 10cm/4in in diameter, diagonally from corner to corner.
PATTERN NOTES
You can make as many hexagons as you wish to create a larger cushion or blanket, joining them as for this cushion. Use yarns A-F for the hexagons in any combination you wish. Yarn G is used for joining the hexagons together.
SPECIAL STITCHES
Puff: (Yoh, insert hook into st, yoh and pull through a lp, drawing it up to the height of a htr) 4 times, 9 lps on hook, yoh and pull through all lps on hook.
Popcorn: Work 5tr into next st, remove hook from final stitch, insert into first of 5tr, then back through last loop, yoh and pull through everything on hook.
WHOLE HEXAGON MOTIF
Rnd 1: With 4mm hook, work 3ch to count as first tr, [1tr, 3ch, (2tr, 3ch) 5 times] in 3rd ch from hook, join rnd with sl st. Change colour, joining new yarn to any 3ch-sp.
Rnd 2:2ch, (1 puff (see Special Stitches) 2ch, 1 puff, 1ch), in each 3ch-sp around, join rnd with a sl st.
Change colour, joining new yarn to any 2ch-sp.
Rnd 3: 3ch, counts as first tr, work popcorn (see Special Stitches) into bottom of chain, (3ch, work popcorn into next ch-sp, 3ch) to end of rnd, join rnd with sl st.
Fasten off yarn.
Make 50 hexagon motifs in the same way.
HALF HEXAGON MOTIF
Row 1: With 4mm hook and any contrast shade, work 6ch (to count as first tr, 3ch), [(2tr, 3ch) three times, 3ch, 1tr] in 3rd ch from hook, turn.
Change colour, joining new yarn to any 3ch-sp.
Row 2: 5ch, 1 puff, 1 ch into first 3ch-sp, [(1 puff, 2ch, 1 puff, 1ch), in 3ch-sp] twice, 1 puff in last 3ch-sp, 2ch, 1 tr in same 3ch-sp, turn.
Change colour, joining new yarn to any 2ch-sp.
Row 3: 3ch, counts as first tr, work popcorn into bottom of chain, (3ch, work popcorn into next ch-sp, 3ch)to end.
Fasten off yarn.
Make ten half hexagon motifs in the same way.
JOINING MOTIFS
With 4mm hook and yarn G, work a final row around one motif Row 4: Join yarn to any 3ch-sp, 3ch, (2tr, 3ch, 3tr) all into same sp, 3tr in next ch-sp, [(3tr, 3ch, 3tr) in next 3ch-sp, 3tr in next ch-sp] to end, join md with a sl st.
To join the next motif to the first, finished motif, work as for Row 4, joining to the first motif along one side with a sl st after each 3tr-gp.
Arrange motifs as diagram and join each motif to the ones beside it along the final round.
Fold the fabric around the cushion, overlapping slightly at the back, and sew or crochet the sides together. Attach buttons at corresponding points to the tips of the overlapping hexagons and fasten through the natural holes of the hexagons.
