Measurements

41cm/16in high. 

Materials

1 x 100g (190m) ball of Sirdar Wool Rich Aran (60% wool, 40% acrylic) in each of Shingle (311), Westbury (314), Powder Blue (313), Cream (310) and Purple (315).

Pair of 3 3/4mm (No. 9) knitting needles; washable toy stuffing; 2 buttons; length of ribbon.

Tension

22 stitches and 25 rows, to 10 x 10cm, over pattern, using 3 3/4mm needles.

Yarn amounts are based on average requirements and are therefore approximate. Instructions in square brackets are worked as stated after 2nd bracket.

Legs and body

First leg: With 3 3/4mm needles and Shingle, cast on 41 sts. P 2 rows. Stranding yarn not in use loosely across wrong side over not more than 3 or 4 sts at a time and reading chart from right to left on right side (k) rows and from left to right on wrong side (p) rows, work pattern from chart thus:

1st row: K first st from 1st row of chart, k across 4-st pattern to end. 

2nd row: P across 4-st pattern of 2nd row of chart to last st, p last st. Continue working pattern from chart in this way, work another 7 rows.

Shape instep: Next row: Pattern 18, p2tog, p1, p2togb, pattern 18.

Next row: Pattern 15, cast off next 10 sts, pattern to end - 29 sts. Pattern another 24 rows.

Divide for back and front: Next row: Pattern 7 and leave these 7 sts on a st holder for quarter back, pattern 12 sts and sl these 12 sts onto spare needle for half front, cast off next 4 sts for crotch, pattern to end and leave the last 6 sts on second st holder for quarter of back.

Second leg: With 3 3/4mm needles and Shingle, cast on 41 sts. P 2 rows. Work pattern from chart thus:

1st row: K first st from first row of chart, k across 4-st pattern to end.

2nd row: P across 4-st pattern of 2nd row of chart to last st, p last st. Continue working pattern from chart in this way, work another 7 rows.

Shape instep: Next row: Pattern 18, p2tog, p1, p2togb, pattern 18.

Next row: Pattern 14, cast off next 10 sts, pattern to end - 29 sts. Pattern another 24 rows.

Divide for back and front: Next row: Pattern 7 and leave these 7 sts on a st holder for quarter back, cast off next 4 sts for crotch, pattern 11 sts more and sl these 12 sts onto spare needle for half front, pattern to end and leave the last 6 sts on second st holder for quarter back.

Front: With wrong side facing, slip 12 sts on spare needle from first leg then 12 sts on spare needle from second leg onto 3 3/4mm needles, turn and pattern to last st, inc in last st - 25 sts. Continue in pattern for another 28 rows. Cast off.

Back: With wrong side facing, slip 6 sts on second st holder, then 7 sts on first st holder of second leg onto 3 3/4mm needle, then onto same needle slip 6 sts of second st holder, then 7 sts of first st holder of first leg, turn and inc in first st, pattern 4, work 2tog, pattern 6 across first leg sts, pattern 5, work 2tog, pattern 6 sts across second leg sts - 25 sts. Continue in pattern for another 28 rows. Cast off.

Soles (make 2)

With right side facing, using 3 3/4mm needles and beginning 20cm leaving end of Shingle, pick up and k41 sts along cast on edge of one leg, turn and cast off first 5 sts pwise and break off yarn, then slip next 36 sts, turn and using the 20cm length, cast off first 5 sts kwise - 31 sts. With right side facing, slip first 13 sts onto 3 3/4mm needle, join in Shingle, k6, wrap1,turn.

1st row: P7, wrap1, turn. 

2nd row: K8, wrap1, turn. 

3rd row: P9, wrap1, turn. 

4th row: K8, skpo, wrap1, turn.

5th row: P8, p2tog, wrap1, turn.

Repeat 4th and 5th rows, 10 times more - 9 sts. Cast off. Join together cast-off sts of instep on each leg, then join crotch. Taking 1 st into the seam, join leg seams. With this seam at centre of cast-off sts of sole, sew lower edge of leg to sole. Place mark 6 sts in from each side edge on cast-off edge on back and front. Join back and front together along each side to last 11 rows, then work diagonal seam to markers, leaving edge between markers open and the excess fabric inside the body. Stuff feet, legs and body firmly.

Arms (make 2)

With 3 3/4mm needles and Shingle, cast on 29 sts. 

1st row: K10, wrap1, turn. 

2nd row: P5, wrap1, turn.

3rd row: K6, wrap1, turn. 

4th row: P7, wrap1, turn. 

5th row: K8, wrap1, turn.

6th row: P9, wrap1, turn.

7th row: K10, wrap1, turn.

8th row: P11, wrap1, turn.

9th row: K22, wrap1, turn.

10th row: P5, wrap1, turn.

11th row: K6, wrap1, turn.

12th row: P7, wrap1, turn. 

13th row: K8, wrap1, turn.

14th row: P9, wrap1, turn. 

15th row: K10, wrap1, turn.

16th row: P11, wrap1, turn.

K to end. P 2 rows. Work pattern from chart thus:

1st row: K first st from 1st row of chart, k across 4-st pattern to end.

2nd row: P across 4-st pattern of 2nd row of chart to last st, p last st. Continue working pattern from chart in this way, work another 28 rows. Cast off. Place mark at each side of centre 13 sts on cast-off edge. Fold each arm in half and work seam around cast-on edge and along side to last 14 rows, then work diagonal seam to markers, leaving excess fabric inside arms. Stuff arms, easing stuffing towards top. With seam at back, oversew top edge, place it to side of neck edge and secure in position.

Head (make 2)

With 3 3/4mm needles and Shingle, cast on 33 sts. P 1 row. Work pattern from chart thus:

1st row: K first st from 1st row of chart, k across 4-st pattern to end.

2nd row: P across 4-st pattern of 2nd row of chart to last st, p last st. Continue working pattern from chart in this way, work another 28 rows. Cast off. On back piece, sew darts at centre on top and bottom, making them about 4cm long. Work darts on front piece, making the bottom dart about 3 cm long and top one about 6 cm long. With right side of front and back pieces together and leaving an opening on cast-on edge the same width as neck edge of body, sew around pieces, tapering corners. Turn to right side and stuff firmly. Sew head to body, adding stuffing if necessary.

Ears (make 4)

With 3 3/4mm needles and Shingle, cast on 10 sts. Ss 2 rows. Inc 1 st at each end of next 2 rows. Ss 4 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of next 3 rows. P 1 row. Cast off. Join paired pieces together, leaving cast-on edge open. Oversew this edge and sew on top of head.

To complete

Mark position of eyes on front of head. Take a length of Shingle from seam at back neck through head to first eye position and make a small stitch, return to the point of entry, pull up ends to indent for eye socket and secure in position. Indent second socket in same way. Sew buttons in marked positions. Tie ribbon round neck.
