This long, delicate dress is intended for Baby's special day . Instructions are also given for a shorter, everyday version.

MATERIALS

2 (3) skeins of Softee Baby from Bernat (100% acrylic; 5 oz/140 g) in color 02000 White (2)

Size G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook or size to obtain gauge

2 buttons, 3/8" diameter

2 yds of 3/8"-wide white satin ribbon

7 ribbon flowers with pearls, 1 1/2" diameter (available at most craft and fabric stores)

3 ribbon flowers with pearls, 1" diameter

Tapestry needle 

Sewing needle and matching thread

FRONT BODICE

Ch 39 (41).

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each rem ch-38 (40) sc. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn.

Rows 3-6 (10): Rep row 2.

Shape Armhole

Row 1 (RS): Sl st in first 5 sc, ch 1, sc in same sc and in next 29 (31) sc-30 (32) sc. Turn, leaving rem sc un worked.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn.

Rows 3-14: Rep row 2.

Shape Left-Front Neck and Shoulder

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first 7 (8) sc, sc2tog-8 (9) sc. Turn, leaving rem sts unworked.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first 6 (7) sc, sc2tog-7 (8) sc. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn.

Row 5: Rep row 4. Fasten off. 

Shape Right-Front Neck and Shoulder

Hold piece with RS facing you, sk next 12 sts from left neck and shoulder; join in next st.

Row I (RS): Ch 1, sk first sc, sc in next sc and in each rem sc—8 (9) sc. Turn. 

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sk first sc, sc in next sc and in each rem sc-7 (8) sc. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn.

Row 5: Rep row 4. Fasten off. 

BACK BODICE

Work as for front bodice through row 2 of armhole shaping.

Shape Right-Back Neck and Shoulder

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first 13 (14) sc. Turn, leaving rem sc un worked.

Rows 2-12: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn.

Row 13: Ch 1, sc in first 7 (8) sc, sc2tog-8 (9) sc. Turn, leaving rem sc unworked.

Row 14: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each rem sc-7 (8) sc. Turn.

Rows 15-17: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn. At end of last row, fasten off.

Shape Left-Back Neck and Shoulder

Hold back with RS facing you; join in 5th sc from right-back shoulder.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in each sc-13 (14) sc. Turn.

Rows 2-12: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn.

Row 13: Sl st in first 5 sc, ch 1, sc in next sc and each rem sc—8 (9) sc. Turn.

Row 14: Ch 1, sc in first 6 (7) sc, sc2tog-7 (8) sc. Turn.

Rows 15-17: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn. At end of last row, fasten off.

Hold front and bock bodices with RS tog and sew shoulder and side seams using yarn and tapestry needle.

PLACKETS

Button Placket Hold piece with RS facing you and center edge of left back at top.

Row 1 (RS): join in edge of first row, ch 1, sc in same row ond each rem row-12 sc. 

Rows 2-5: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn. At end of last row, fasten off. 

Buttonhole Placket

Hold piece with RS facing you and center edge of right back at top.

Row 1 (RS): Join in edge of first row at beg of neck shaping, ch 1, sc in some row and in each rem row-12 sc. Turn. 

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first 3 sc, ch 1, sk next sc-buttonhole made; sc in next 4 sc, ch 1, sk next sc-buttonhole made; sc in next 3 sc. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc ond ch-1 sp. Turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Faster off. Sew buttons opposite buttonholes. 

SKIRT

Hold bodice with RS facing you and lower edge at top; join in any unused lp of beg ch on center back.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1; sc in same lp, in each rem lp, and in each seam; join in first sc—78 (82) sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-1 sp on this and following rnds), sk next sc, *dc in next sc, ch 1, sk next sc; rep from * around; join in 3rd ch of beg ch 4-39 (41) ch-1 sps.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same ch, in each dc, and in each ch-1 sp—78 (82) sc; join in first sc.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same sc, in next sc work (dc, ch 1, dc)-V-st made; *sc in next sc, V-st in next sc; rep from * around; join in first sc—39 (41) V-sts.

Rnd 5: Ch 4, dc in same sc, *sc in ch-1 sp of next V-st, V-st in next sc; rep from * around; join in 3rd ch of beg ch 4.

Rnd 6: Sl st in first ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, V-st in next sc, *sc in next V-st, V-st in next sc; rep from * around; join in first sc. 

Rep rnds 5 and 6 until skirt measures about 18", ending on a row 5.

Hold dress with RS facing you and one armhole at top join in any underarm sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in some sc, work V-st in next sc, *sc in next sc, work V-st in next sc; rep from * around; join in first sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 4 (counts as dc and ch-1 sp), dc in same sc, sc in next V-st, *V-st in next sc, sc in next V-st; rep from * around; join in 3rd ch of beg ch 4.

Rnd 4: Sl st in first V-st, ch 1, sc in same sp, V-st in next sc, *sc in next V-st, V-st in next sc; rep from * around; join in first sc.

Rnd 5: Rep rnd 3.

COLLAR

Hold gown with RS of back facing you and button placket at top; join in edge of first st to left of button placket.

Row I: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st across back, in edge of each row of shoulder, in each sc across front, in edge of each row of shoulder, in each sc of back, to first row of buttonhole placket-43 sc. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *V-st in next sc, sc in next sc; rep from * across. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 4, dc in same sc, *sc in next V*st, V-st in next sc; rep from * across. Turn.

Row 4: Rep row 2. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Weave ribbon through ch-1 sps on raw 2 of skirt, beg and ending at center front Tie in bow and allow long tails to hang down skirt. Using sewing needle and thread, sew 1 large flower at front of collar and 3 small flowers on bodice (see photo). Sew 6 large flowers evenly spaced around lower edge of skirt above ruffle.
