Gauge

16 stitches and 12 rows to 4 in. (10 cm) measured over pattern using H8 (5.00 mm) hook.

Change hook size if necessary to obtain this gauge.

Back and fronts

(worked in one piece to armholes)

With H8 (5.00 mm) hook and A, make 101 [109:117] ch.

Foundation row (RS): 1 sc into 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc into each of next 3 ch, *1 dc into each of next 4 ch, 1 sc into each of next 4 ch, rep from * to end, turn. 100 [108:116] sts.

Join in B and cont in patt as follows:

1st row: Using B, 3 ch (counts as first dc), skip sc at base of 3 ch, 1 dc into each of next 3 sc, *1 sc into each of next 4 dc, 1 dc into each of next 4 sc, rep from * to end, turn.

2nd row: Using B, 3 ch (counts as first dc), skip dc at base of 3 ch, 1 dc into each of next 3 dc, *1 sc into each of next 4 sc, 1 dc into each of next 4 dc, rep from * to end, working dc at end of last rep into top of 3 ch at beg of previous row, turn.

3rd row: Using A, 1 ch (does NOT count as st), 1 sc into each of first 4 dc, *1 dc into each of next 4 sc, 1 sc into each of next 4 dc, rep from * to end, working last sc into top of 3 ch at beg of previous row, turn.

4th row: Using A, 1 ch (does NOT count as st), 1 sc into each of first 4 sc, *1 dc into each of next 4 dc, 1 sc into each of next 4 sc, rep from * to end, turn. These 4 rows form patt.

Cont in patt until work measures 12 1/2 [15 1/2:16 1/2] in. (32 [39:42] cm), ending after a WS row.

SHAPE RIGHT FRONT

Next row: Patt 22 [24:26] sts and turn, leaving rem sts unworked.

Work on this set of 22 [24:26] sts only for Right Front.

Cont in patt until armhole measures 5 1/2 [6:6 1/4] in. (14 [15:16] cm), ending after a WS row.

SHAPE SHOULDER

Place marker 10 [11:12] sts in from armhole edge to denote neck edge of shoulder seam. Do NOT fasten off but slip st onto a safety pin. Do NOT break off yarn - these balls of yarn will be used for Hood.

SHAPE BACK

Return to last complete row worked before shaping Right Front, skip next 8 sts, rejoin yarn to next st, work foundation ch on this st, then patt a further 39 [43:47] sts and turn, leaving rem sts un worked.

Work on this set of 40 [44:48] sts only for Back.

Cont in patt until Back matches Right Front to shoulder, ending after a WS row. Fasten off, placing markers either side of center 20 [22:24] sts to denote back neck.

SHAPE LEFT FRONT

Return to last complete row worked before shaping Right Front and Back, skip next 8 sts, rejoin yarn to next st, work foundation ch on this st, then patt to end, turn.

Work on this set of 22 [24:26] sts only for Left Front.

Cont in patt until Left Front matches Back and Right Front to shoulder, ending after a WS row.

Fasten off, placing marker 10 [11:12] sts in from armhole edge to denote neck edge of shoulder seam.

Sleeves

With H8 (5.00 mm) hook and A, make 25 [27:29] ch.

Foundation row (RS): 1 sc into 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc into each of next 1 [2:31 ch, *1 dc into each of next 4 ch, 1 sc into each of next 4 ch, rep from * to last 6 [7:8] ch, 1 dc into each of next 4 ch, 1 sc into each of last 2 [3:4] ch, turn. 24 [26:28] sts.

Join in B and cont in patt as follows:

1st row: Using B, 3 ch (counts as first dc), skip sc at base of 3 ch, 1 dc into each of next 1 [2:3] sc, *1 sc into each of next 4 dc, 1 dc into each of next 4 sc, rep from * to last 6 [7:8] sts, 1 sc into each of next 4 dc, 1 dc into each of next 2 [3:4] sc, turn.

This row sets position of patt as given for Back and Fronts.

Cont in patt as now set, shaping sides by inc 1 st at each end of next 3 [1:1] rows, then on foll 7 [9:9] alt rows, then on 0 [1:2] foll 4th rows, taking inc sts into patt. 44 [48:52] sts.

Note: When working increases, inc 1 st by working twice into first and last sts of rows, keeping patt correct. If st to be increased is a sc, at beg of row work 1 ch (as turning ch), then work 1 sc into first st, patt again into this st -1 st increased - and across until last st of row has been worked, then work 1 sc into same place as last st -1 st increased. If st to be increased is a dc, at beg of row work 3 ch (to count as first dc), then patt again into st at base of 3 ch - 1 st increased, patt across row until last st of row has been worked, then work 1 dc into same place as last st -1 st increased.

Cont even until Sleeve measures 8 1/4 [10 3/4:12 1/4] in. (21 [27:31] cm), ending after a WS row. Fasten off.

Place markers along row-end edges 1 in. (2.5 cm) down from top of last row to denote base of armholes.

Hood

Join shoulder seams.

With RS facing, using H8 (5.00 mm) hook and appropriate color yarn, pick up yarn set to one side for Hood and work around neck edge as follows:

1st row (RS): Patt across 12 [13:14] sts of Right Front, keeping patt correct as set by Right Front sts, patt across 20 [22:24] back neck sts as follows: 1 st into each of first 2 [1:0] sts, 2 sts into each of next 16 [20:24] sts, 1 st into each of last 2 [1:0] sts, then patt across 12 [13:14] sts of Left Front, turn. 60 [68:76] sts.

Cont in patt until Hood measures 8 [8 1/4:8 3/4] in. (20 [21:22] cm), ending after a WS row.

Fold Hood in half with RS together and join top seam by working 1 row of dc through top of both sets of sts.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Join Sleeve seams below markers. Matching sleeve markers to center of 8 sts left free at underarm and center of top of last row of Sleeves to shoulder seams, sew Sleeves into armholes.

MAIN EDGING

With RS facing, using G6 (4.00 mm) hook and A, attach yarn to foundation ch edge directly below one armhole, 1 ch (does NOT count as st), work 1 round of sc evenly around entire hem, front opening and hood edges, working 3 sc into hem corner points and ending with ss to first sc, turn.

Next round: 1 ch (does NOT count as st), 1 sc into each sc to end, working 3 sc into hem corner points and ending with ss to first sc, turn.

Rep last round twice more.

Fasten off.

CUFF EDGING

Work as for Main Edging, rejoining yarn at base of Sleeve seam.

Attach buttons 1/4 in. (3 cm) in from appropriate front (left for a girl, or right for a boy), placing lowest button 9 in. (23 cm) up from lower edge, top button 4 in. (10 cm) below start of Hood, and rem button evenly spaced between. Overlap fronts by 2h in. (6.5 cm) and fasten coat by pushing buttons through fabric of other front.
