This easy to follow pattern is perfect for those new to garment making and is easily adaptable to any size.

MATERIALS

• Truly Hooked Superwash Merino DK, 100% Merino wool, 100g/225m/246yds

Yarn A: Playdoh (multi) x 1-3 skeins depending on size

Yarn B: Magenta (solid) x 1 skein • 5mm hook

• Two stitch markers

YARN ALTERNATIVES

You can use any DK weight yarn to achieve a similar effect. Due to the nature of this pattern, you could also use aran weight (with a 6mm hook) or 4ply (with a 4mm hook).

TENSION

Work 2 shells and 3 rows to measure 7 x 7cm/2 3/4 x 2 3/4in using a 5mm hook or size required to obtain tension.

MEASUREMENTS

This garment is made to measure. You will need to take the following measurements before you begin:

Rise: Measure from the tummy button, down between the legs, and up to the point level with the tummy button on the back. Do this over your child's nappy to ensure a good fit.

Hips: Measure around the widest part of your child's hips when they have a nappy on.

Inside leg: Measure from the groin to ankle on the inside of your child's leg, or higher if making a cropped length.

The measurements table overleaf contains sample measurements to use as a guideline if it is not possible for you to measure the intended wearer.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Foundation treble (ftr): 3ch (counts as 1ftr), yoh, insert into the third chain from hook and pull a loop through, 3 loops on hook, yoh and draw through first loop only to create "1ch", 3 loops on hook, (yoh and pull through 2 loops) twice. Foundation treble crochet stitch completed (2ftr in total including the first 3ch). * Yoh, insert hook into the "1 ch" of the last stitch and pull a loop through, 3 loops on hook, yoh and draw through first loop only to create "1ch", 3 loops on hook, (yoh and pull through 2 loops) twice; rep from * until you have the desired amount of stitches.

PATTERN NOTES

The amount of yarn used will vary depending on the size you make your leggings. Here is a rough guide to how much you are likely to need:

Up to 9m: 100g of yarn A, 20g of yarn B.

Up to 2yrs: 200g of yarn A, 25g of yarn B.

Up to 5yrs: 300g of yarn A, 50g of yarn B.

WAISTBAND

Rnd 1: With yarn B, work chainless foundation treble (see Special Stitches) to the same length as hip measurement and to give an even number of sts. Join with a sl st taking care not to twist the sts.

Rnd 2: [1 rtrf, 1 rtrb] around, join with sl st.

Rnds3 &4: As rnd 2.

Fasten off yarn B.

BODY

Join yarn A and cont as folls: Rnd 1: 1 ch, 1 dc in same st, *miss 2 sts, 5tr in next st (1 shell made), miss 2 sts, 1 dc; rep from * to end, join with sl st.

Note: When you reach the end of the rnd you may need to miss 1 st or maybe 3 sts before you join, which is absolutely fine!

Rnd 2: 2ch, 2tr in same st, *1dc in third tr of shell, 5tr in dc (1 shell made); rep from * to end, work 2tr in same st as 2ch, join with sl st.

Rnd 3: 1ch, dc in same st, *miss 2 sts, 5tr in next st, miss 2 sts, 1 dc in next st; rep from * to end, join with sl st.

Rep mds 2 & 3 until work meas approximately 2.5cm/1in less than the rise measurement.

Working in rows, cont as folls:

Row 1: 2ch, 8tr, turn.

Note: Adjust the number of sts to the size of the child - slender legs may only need 6 sts, chunkier legs may need 10 sts.

Row 2: 2ch, 1tr in ea st, turn. Rows 3 & 4: Rep row 2.

Break yarn leaving a 25cm/ 10in tail.

JOIN THE CROTCH

Lay your work flat with the flap you have just made in the centre at the back. Carefully use a stitch marker to mark the same point on the opposite side, either side of the flap. You will need to make sure the leg holes are the same size - you can do this with a tape measure, by counting the shells, or by folding your work in half. When you are happy with the placement, turn the work inside out and carefully sew the sides together in between your markers, using the tail. Sew into the back loop of the side closest to you, and the front loop of the side further away, to give a neater join.

LEGS

Turn work RS out again, rejoin yarn B in a dc at the centre back of one of the legs.

Rnd 1: 2ch, 2tr in same st, *1dc in third tr of shell, 5tr in dc; rep from * to end, 2tr in the same st as 2ch, join with sl st.

Rnd 2: 1 ch, 1dc in same st, *miss 2 sts, 5tr in next st, miss 2 sts, 1dc in next st; rep from * to end, join with sl st.

Rep mds 1 & 2 until Leg is desired length.

Break yarn A and rejoin yarn B.

CUFF

Rnds 1 & 2:1 ch, 1 htr in ea st around, join with sl st. Fasten off.

Repeat for second Leg.

FINISHING

Weave in all loose ends and gently block.

With yarn A, make a chain long enough to go all the way around the waist one and half times. Fasten off and weave in ends. Carefully thread this through your waistband to make a drawstring for the waist.
