Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, 50g in:

Tobacco (shade 98) x 3 (3:4:4:5) balls (M)

White (shade 100) x 1 ball (A)

Black (shade 300) x 1 ball (B)

Orange (shade 92) x 1 ball (C)

3mm (UK 11, US 2-3) and 3.25mm (UK 10, US 3) knitting needles

TENSION

25 sts and 34 rows to 10cm (4in) over st-st, using 3.25mm (UK 10, US 3) needles

What could look cuter than a panda bear motif on a big cosy jumper for a baby? The motif is knitted on both the front and back, with facial features omitted from the reverse and a super-cute pompom tail added!

NOTES

When working from the chart odd numbered (k) rows are read and worked from right to left, even numbered (p) rows are read and worked from left to right.

BACK

With 3mm (UK 11, US 2-3) needles and M, cast on 70 (74:82:86:90) sts.

1st rib row: K2, (p2, k2) to end.

2nd rib row: P2, (k2, p2) to end.

Rep the last 2 rows 3 (3:4:4:5) times and inc 3 (3:1:1:3) sts evenly across last row. 73 (77:83:87:93) sts.

Change to 3.25mm (UK 10, US 3) needles. Beg with a k row, work in st-st. Work 10(12:14:16:18) rows. Omitting nose and eyes and working these sts in A, work in st-st from chart, as follows:

1st row: K20 (22:25:27:30) M, k across 33 sts of 1 st row of chart, k20 (22:25:27:30) M.

2nd row: P20 (22:25:27:30) M, p across 33 sts of 2nd row of chart, p20 (22:25: 27:30) M.

These 2 rows set the position of the chart. Cont in patt from chart, working until back measures 18 (19:21:23: 25)cm, 7 (7 1/2:8 1/4:9:10) in from cast on edge, ending with a wrong side row.

Shape armholes

Cast off 5 (6:7:8:9) sts at beg of next 2 rows. 63 (65:69:71:75) sts. Cont in patt to end of chart, then work in M only, until back measures 26 (28:31:34:37)cm, 10 1/4 (11:12 1/4:13 1/2:14 1/2)in from cast on edge, ending with a p row.

Shape neck

Next row (riqht side): K18 (19:20:21:22), turn and work on these sts only for first side of back neck, leave rem sts on a spare needle. Dec one st at neck edge on next 6 rows. 12 (13:14:15:16) sts. Work 1 row. Cast off.

With right side facing, slip centre 27 (27:29:29:31) sts onto a holder, rejoin yarn to rem sts, k to end. Dec one st at neck edge on next 6 rows. 12 (13:14:15:16) sts. Work 1 row. Cast off.

FRONT

When working from chart, include the nose and the eyes. Work as given for Back until 12 rows fewer have been worked than on Back to shoulder shaping.

Shape front neck

Next row (right side): K22 (23:24:25:26), turn and work on these sts only for first side of back neck, leave rem sts on a spare needle. Dec one st at neck edge on next 10 rows. 12 (13:14:15:16) sts. Work 1 row. Cast off.

With right side facing, slip centre 19 (19:21:21:23) sts on a holder, rejoin yarn to rem sts, k to end. Dec one st at neck edge on next 10 rows. 12 (13:14:15:16) sts. Work 1 row. Cast off.

SLEEVES

With 3mm (UK 11, US 2-3) needles and M, cast on 34 (34:38:38:42) sts.

1st rib row: K2, (p2, k2) to end.

2nd rib row: P2, (k2, p2) to end.

Rep the last 2 rows 3 (3:4:4:5) times and inc 0 (2:0:2:0) sts evenly across last row. 34 (36:38:40:42) sts.

Change to 3.25mm (UK 10, US 3) needles. Beg with a k row, work in st-st. Work 4 rows. Inc row K3, m1, k to last 3 sts, m1, k3. Work 3 rows. Rep the last 4 rows 7 (8:9:11:13) times more and the inc row again. 52 (56:60:66:72) sts.

Cont straight until sleeve measures 15 (17:19: 21:23)cm, 6 (6 3/4:7 1/2:8 1/4:9)in from cast on edge, ending with a p row. Place a marker at each end of last row. Work a further 7 (8: 9:10:12) rows. Cast off.

NECKBAND

Join right shoulder seam. With right side facing, 3mm (UK 11, US 2-3) needles and M, pick up and k11 sts down left front neck, k19 (19:21:21:23) sts from centre front holder, pick up and k11 sts up right front neck, 7 sts down right back neck, k27 (27:29:29:31) sts from back neck holder, then pick up and k7 sts up left back neck. 82 (82:86:86: 90) sts.

1st rib row: P2, (k2, p2) to end.

2nd rib row: K2, (p2, k2) to end.

Rep the last 2 rows 2 (2: 3:3) times and the first row again. Cast off in rib.

MAKING UP

Join left shoulder and neckband seams. Sew sleeves into armholes, with row-ends above markers sewn to sts cast off at underarm. Join sleeve and side seams. With A, make a small pompom and attach to the back for tail.

IT'S IN THE DETAIL

When recreating a chart in knitting, like the panda motif for this jumper, it involves lots of colour changes. When it's time to change each of those colours is the point at which holes can occur. To avoid unsightly gaps in your work, use small amounts of yarn for each colour area and twist yarns at colour change.
