YOU WILL NEED

Bergere de France Magic+ chunky 50% acrylic, 50% wool (approx 80m per 50g ball)

5[6:7:8:9] x 50g balls 21817 Adriatique (A)

1[1:1:1:1] x 50g ball 24885 Estuaire (B)

1[1:1:1:1] x 50g ball 34723 Grigio (C)

1 pair each 5mm and 5.5mm needles

3 x turquoise toggles (20mm)

Note: Yarn amounts given are based on average requirements and are approximate.

TENSION

16 sts and 22 rows to 10cm over st st using 5.5mm needles.

Use larger or smaller needles if necessary to obtain correct tension.

PATTERN NOTES

Buttonholes

Using a sewing needle, pick up the horizontal strand of the stitch where you want to place the buttonhole, pull it up and attach 2 rows above with a few sts on the WS of work. Repeat with the horizontal strand below the first strand and attach in the same way 2 rows down.

BACK

Using 5mm needles and A cast on 54[58:62:66:70] sts.

Row 1 (RS): K2, *p2, k2* rep from *to*.

Row 2: P2, *k2, p2* rep from *to*.

These 2 rows form 2/2 rib, cont as est until work measures 3cm (1.25in) (6 rows), decreasing 2 sts on the final row for sizes 4 and 6 yrs, increasing 2 sts for size 12 yrs. 52[56:62:66:72] sts.

Change to 5.5mm needles and starting with a knit row cont in st st until work measures 15.5[18.5:21.5:24.5:27.5]cm (6[7.25:8.5:9.5:10.75]in) (33[41:47:53:61] rows) total, ending on a RS row.

Next row (WS): Inc 5 sts evenly across row. 57[61:67:71:77] sts.

Working from the Chart for size being made, cont in the Fairisle patt for 15 rows. Then change to A and work 1 row of purl on WS of work decreasing 5 sts evenly across row. 52[56:62:66:72] sts.

Armholes

Cont in st st and cast off at the beg of every row as folls: 0-0-0-0-3 sts 0-0-0-0-2 times, 2 sts 2-2-4-4-2 times, then 1 st 4-6-4-4-4 times. 44[46:50:54:58] sts.**

Cont without shaping until work measures 38[42:46:50:54]cm (15[16.5:18:19.75:21.25]in) (80[90:98:106:116] rows) total.

Shoulders and neck

Cast off 4[4:5:5:6] sts, work 12[12:13:14:14] sts, cast off the central 12[14:14:16:18] sts for the neck, work rem 16[16:18:19:20] sts. Each side will now be completed separately.

Next row (WS): Cast off 4[4:5:5:6] sts, work to central cast off sts and put rem sts on a stitch holder.

Next row (RS): Cast off 2 sts at neck edge, Iwork to end.

Next row (WS): Cast off 5[5:5:6:6] sts, work to end. Work 1 row straight.

Cast off rem 5[5:6:6:6] sts. With WS facing pick up sts left on the stitch holder.

Cast off 2 sts, work to end.

Next row (RS): Cast off 5[5:5:6:6] sts, work to end. Work 1 row straight.

Cast off rem 5[5:6:6:6] sts.

FRONT

Work as for Back to **.

Cont without shaping until work measures 28[31:34:37:40]cm (11[12.25:13.5:14.5:15.75]in) (58[66:72:78:86] rows) total.

Neck opening

Next row (RS): Work 19[20:22:24:26] sts, cast off the central 6 sts, work to end.

Next row (WS): Work to cast off sts, put rem sts on a stitch holder. Work will now be completed in 2 sections.

Cont on these 19[20:22:24:26] sts for right side of neck until work measures 35[39:43:46:50]cm (13.75[15.5:17:18:19.75]in) (74[84:92:98:108] rows) total. 

Neck

Cast off at the beg of every RS row (neck edge) as foll: 0[3:3:3:4] sts 0[1:1:1:1] times, 2 sts 2[1:1:1:1] times, 1 st 1 [1:1:2:2] times. 

Cont on the rem 14[14:16:17:18] sts until work measures 38[42:46:50:54]cm (15[16.5:18:19.75:21.25]in) (80[90:98:106:116]rows) total.

Shoulder

Cast off at the beg of every WS row as foll: 4[4:5:5:6] sts 1 [1:2:1:3] times, then 5[5:6:6:0] sts 2[2:1:2:0] times. With WS facing pick up sts left on stitch holder.

Cont on these 19[20:22:24:26] sts for left side of neck until work measures 35[39:43:46:50]cm (13.75[15.5:17:18:19.75]in) (74[84:92:98:108] rows) total.

Cast off at the beg of every WS row (neck edge) as foll: 0[3:3:3:4] sts 0[1:1:1:1] times, 2 sts 2[1:1:1:1] times, 1 st 1 [1:1:2:2] times.

Cont on the rem 14[14:16:17:18] sts until work measures 38[42:46:50:54]cm (15[16.5:18:19.75:21.25]in) (80[90:98:106:116]rows) total.

Shoulder

Cast off at the beg of every RS row as foll: 4[4:5:5:6] sts 1 [1:2:1:3] times, then 5[5:6:6:0] sts 2[2:1:2:0] times.

SLEEVES

Using 5mm needles and col A cast on 30[34:34:38:38] sts. Work in 2/2 rib for 3cm (1.25in) (6 rows) but on the final row for size 4 yrs inc 2 sts, for size 10 yrs dec 2 sts. 32[34:34:36:38] sts.

Change to 5.5mm needles and starting with a knit row cont in st st for 10[8:10:10:10] rows.

Next row (RS - inc): K2, inc 1, work to last 2 sts, inc 1, k2. Rep this inc on every foll 10th[8th:10th:10th:10th] row 1 [4:1:1:2] times, then on every foll 8th[0:8th:8th:8th] row 2[0:4:5:5] times.

At the same time when work measures 16.5[19.5:23.5:27.5:31.5]cm (6.5[7.75:9.25:11:12.5]in) (35[41:51:59:69] rows) total, inc 3 sts evenly across next WS row.

On the 41 [45:47:51:55] sts obtained (3[4:5:6:7] sts have been increased at each edge at this stage), work 15 rows of Fairisle following Chart for size being made, then change to col A and work 1 row of purl on the WS dec 3 sts evenly across row. 40[44:46:50:54] sts.

Shape top of sleeve

Cast off at beg of every row: 0[0:3:3:3] sts 0[0:2:2:2] times, 2 sts 4[4:2:2:4] times, 1 st 12[14:14:14:10] times, 2 sts 4[2:2:4:6] times, 0[3:3:3:3] sts 0[2:2:2:2] times.

Cast off the rem 12 sts. 

NECKBAND AND OPENING BORDERS

Using 5mm needles and col A cast on 70[74:78:82:86] sts.

Row 1 (RS): K1, (k1, p1) 3 times, k1, (p2, k2) 13[14:15:16:17] times, p2, (k1, p1) 3 times, k2.

Row 2: P2, (k1, p1) 3 times, k2, (p2, k2) 13[14:15:16:17] times, p1, (k1, p1) 3 times, p1.

Rep these 2 rows until work measures 10cm (4in).

Next row (RS): Patt 8, turn. Working on this set of sts only, cast on 1 st at inside edge for seam and patt to end. 9 sts.

Cont in rib patt as set until work measures 17[18:19:20:20] cm (6.75[7:7.5:8:8]in) total.

Cast off these 9 sts. Place the next 54[58:62:66:70] sts on a stitch holder for the neckband.

Rejoin yarn to rem 8 sts, cast on 1 st at the inside edge for the seam, patt to end. 9 sts.

Cont in rib patt as set until work measures 17[18:19:20:20] cm (6.75[7:7.5:8:8]in) total. Cast off these 9 sts. 

TO FINISH OFF

Join shoulder seams. Graft the neckband around neck edge using backstitch. Sew the opening borders along the opening edges, sewing the short edges of the borders to the 6 cast-off sts on the Front, placing the left edge (when worn) on too of the right edge. Set the tops of the Sleeves into the armholes. Sew side and Sleeve seams.

On the left border, 4 sts from the edge, make 3 buttonholes without cutting thread (see pattern notes), placing the 1st at 9cm (3.5in) from the start of the neckband, the 2nd 2cm (.75in) from the beg of the opening, the 3rd between the other 2. Sew buttons on to the right border to correspond with buttonholes. Secure and weave in all ends.
