Baby kimono



This fine cashmere jacket doesn't cost the world - it is so small.

Size: 62, 68 and 74.

Instructions are given for first size. Figures in parentheses refer to larger sizes. When only one figure is given, it applies to all sizes.

Materials: Baruffa "Cashmere" (100% cashmere, approx. 108 m/25 g): 100 (100-150) g in Grigio Chiaro, col 013, and 25 g in Verdazzurro Opaco, col 009; size 4 mm needles; spool knitter.

Seed Stitch: K1, p1; on foll rows, knit all purl sts, purl all knit sts.

Tension: 19 sts and 32 rows = 10 x 10 cm/4" x 4" in seed st.

Back: With Grigio Chiaro, cast on 56 (60-64) sts and work in seed st until back measures 14 (15-16) cm/5 1/2" (6"-6 1/4") = 44 (48-52) rows from cast-on. Place armhole markers at right and left edges. Cont in seed st until back measures 12 (13-14) cm/4 3/4" (5 1/4"-5 1/2") = 38 (42-44) rows from markers.

Shape neck: Bind off center 8 (10-12) sts. Working each side separately, bind off 3 sts at each neck edge once, then 2 sts once. At same time, when working first bind-off at each neck edge, shape shoulders as foll: Work to last 5 sts, turn work, yo, work to neck edge. On next row, work to 5 sts before yo, turn work, yo, work to neck edge. On next row, work across all sts and ktog or ptog each yo and next st, keeping in pat. Bind off remaining 19 (20-21) sts for each shoulder.

Left Front: With Grigio Chiaro, cast on 56 (60-64) sts and work in seed st until left front measures 14 (15-16) cm/5 1/2" (6"-6 1/4") = 44 (48-52) rows from cast-on. Place armhole marker at right edge and at same time, shape front neck edge as foll: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 WS rows, then 2 sts at beg of next 12 (13-14) WS rows, then 1 st at beg of next 5 (6-7) WS rows = 19 (20-21) sts. When front measures same length as back to shoulder, shape shoulder at right edge same as for back. 

Right Front: Work same as for left front, reversing all shaping.

Sleeves: With Verdazzurro Opaco, cast on 42 (44-46) sts. For sleeve cuff, work in seed st until sleeve measures 4 cm/1 1/2" = 14 rows from cast-on. Change to Grigio Chiaro, cont in seed st and shape sleeve as foll: Inc 1 st at beg and end of 7th row from sleeve cuff, then every foll 8th row 3 (4-5) times = 50 (54-58) sts. Cont in seed st until sleeve measures 14 (15-16) cm/5 1/2" (6"- 6 1/4") = 44 (48-52) rows from end of sleeve cuff. Bind off all sts.

l-cord: With Verdazzurro Opaco and spool knitter, make a 150 cm/60" long l-cord. 

Finishing: Pin pieces to measurements and block with damp towels. Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams, leaving a 1 cm/3/8" opening in left side seam, 2 cm/3/4" below armhole marker. Leaving first 40 cm/16" of l-cord unsewn for tying, sew l-cord to right front, back neck and left front edges. Sew on sleeves between markers.
