SPECIAL TECHNIQUES

CROCHET PROVISIONAL CAST-ON

Make a crochet chain about 4-6 sts longer than the number of sts you wish to cast on. Break yarn and pull through to fasten off. Using main yarn, pick up and knit from the beginning of the chain (rather than from where you have fastened off) the desired number of sts in the bumps on the back of the crochet chain.

JAPANESE SHORT ROWS

Note: While the Japanese short-row method is given in the short-row instructions for shaping the hem, use whichever method you prefer, such as wrap & turn or German short rows, which will not be visible on the RS of the fabric. For the Japanese short-row technique, use a lockable stitch marker or a safety pin (preferably coil-free).

On a knit row, knit to the turning point and fasten your stitch marker around the working yarn. Turn and purl on, ensuring that you pull the yarn tight enough for the marker to sit flush to the needle.

On a purl row, purl to the turning point and fasten your stitch marker around the working yarn. Turn and knit on, ensuring that you pull the yarn tight enough for the marker to sit flush to the needle.

To close the gap you will use the stitch marker to pull up a loop of yarn, which you will work together with the stitch at the turning point. On a knit row, work to the gap, use the marker to pull up the loop and then place your RH needle through the loop and then the stitch and K2tog.

On a purl row, work to the gap, slip the next stitch pwise and then pull up a loop of yarn using the marker and take it over the slipped stitch onto the LH needle. This realigns the stitches to give a neater finish. Purl these two stitches together.
