Tech tip

Consecutive bind-offs on alternate rows have a tendency to look like a flight of stairs. On a garment without sleeves, it's important to have a smooth-looking bind-off at the armhole opening. To avoid the "stairs" look, try the following: at the end of the row before the bind-off, leave the last stitch unworked. Turn the work.

Without working it, slip the first stitch on the left needle purlwise to the right needle—there are now two stitches on the right needle, the last unworked stitch and the slipped stitch. Pass the first stitch over the second stitch. Work the remaining stitches to be bound off using the traditional bind- off technique, working both stitches before passing them over.
