“THE FAIR Isle design on this top was inspired by Norwegian Selbu patterns,” says Anniken Allis. “It’s worked in the round - be brave and steek it, or play it safe and knit the front and back yoke separately.”

SIZE AND YARN: look after the description

NEEDLES & ACCESSORIES: 1 set 4 mm (UK 8/US 6) circular needles, 80-100 cm long

2 sets 4mm (UK 8/US 6) circular needles, 40cm long

3.5mm (UK 9/US 4/E) crochet hook to secure steek (if applicable)

TENSION: 22 sts and 26 rows to 10cm over st st on 4mm needles

BODY

Using longer 4mm circular needles, holding one strand of each colour tied together with yarn B as the tail, use the long-tail method to cast on 200 (240:280) sts. Join for working in the round, being careful not to twist sts, and place a marker for beginning of round with a second marker after 100 (120:140) sts.

Round 1: Using A only, (K1tbl, P1) to end. This round sets twisted rib. Work twisted rib for 5 cm. Cont in yarn A and work st st (knit every round) until body measures 24 (231/2:24) cm. If you wish to steek your garment, now work

YOKE WITHOUT STEEK

BACK

Place Front sts on hold and work 1 row across Back stsinst st. 100 (120:140) sts. Commence chart and work the 20 st pattern repeat (sts 5 to 24) across the Back only, rep 5 (6:7) times across the row. Work rows 1-39 of chart once. With A only, work 6 (10:12) rows in st st. Place centre 50 (54:56) sts on hold for back neck. Place rem sts on hold for shoulders.

FRONT

With RS facing, rejoin yarn and work 1 row instst. 100 (120:140) sts. Commence chart and work the 20 st pattern repeat across the Front only, rep 5 (6:7) times across the row. Work rows 1-39 of chart once. With A only, work 6 (10:12) rows in st st.

SHAPE LEFT FRONT NECK

Next row (RS): K29 (38:47), turn, place centre 42 (44:46) sts from front neck on hold.

Next row: P1, P2tog, P to end. 1st dec’d.

Next row: K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. 1st dec’d. Rep last 2 rows once more. 25 (34:43) sts. Work straight until Left Front matches Back to shoulders.

SHAPE RIGHT FRONT NECK

Next row (RS): Rejoin yarn at neck edge, K to end. 29 (38:47) sts.

Next row (WS): P to last 3 sts, P2tog tbl, P1. 1st dec’d.

Next row: K1, SSK, K to end. 1 st dec’d. Rep last 2 rows once more. 25 (34:43) sts. Work straight until Right Front matches Back to shoulders. Join the shoulder sts by working a three-needle cast-off on the WS.

YOKE WITH STEEK

Next round: Cable cast on 2 sts, K to side marker, slm, turn so WS is facing and cable cast on 4 sts, pm, turn back to RS and K to end of the round, slm, turn so WS is facing again and cable cast on 2 sts, turn back to RS again and join for working in the round. 208(248:288) sts. The new cast-on sts form the steeks for the armholes.

Next round: Commencing chart from stitch 3, work the next 2 steek sts of chart, pm, work the pattern rep 5 (6:7) times across the front, pm, work the last 4 steek sts, pm, work the pattern rep 5 (6:7) times across the back to marker. Cont as set working rows 1-39 of the chart once. With A only, work 6 (10:12) rounds in st st.

SHAPE FRONT NECK

You will now work in rows as folls:

Next row (RS): K31 (40:49), turn, place 42 (44:46) sts from front neck on hold.

Next row (WS): P1, P2tog, P across left front, back and to last 3 sts before front neck, P2tog tbl, P1. 2 sts dec’d.

Next row: K1, SSK, K to 3 sts before front neck, K2tog, K1. 2 sts dec’d. Rep last 2 rows once more. 158 (196:234) sts on the needle.

Next row: P to steek, cast off 4 steek sts, P to next steek, cast off 4 steek sts, P to end. 150 (188:226) sts. Place 50 (54:56) sts from centre back on hold for back neck. Join the shoulder sts by working a three-needle cast-off on the WS.

FINISHING

Steam block the sweater, paying extra attention to the steek.

SECURING THE STEEK

Using slip stitch crochet and starting from the top, crochet around the steek. Alternatively, machine stitch a seam around the steek. Cut the steek, securing any loose ends which may appear.

ARMHOLE CASING

With B, the shorter 4mm needles and RS facing, starting at the underarm, pick up and K106 (116:124) sts evenly around the armhole edge. Join for working in the round. Knit 4 rounds and place the sts on hold. Working into the same armhole with B and WS facing, starting at the underarm, pick upand K106 (116:124) loops visible on the WS (created by picking up the sts for the RS) around the armhole. Join for working in the round. Knit 4 rounds.

Place the first set of sts back onto a second 4mm needle and hold both needles together. With RS facing, K1 st from front needle together with 1 st from back needle; rep to end of round. Cast off all sts. Repeat for other side.

NECKBAND

With B and RS facing, starting at the left shoulder, pick up and K6 (8:12) sts to front neck, K42 (44:46) sts from front neck, pick up and K6 (8:12) sts to right shoulder, K50 (54:56) sts from back neck. 104 (114:126) sts. Join for working in the round.

Round 1 (RS): Purl.

Round 2: Knit.

Round 3: Purl.

Cast off.

Weave in all loose ends. Block sweater to measurements and following any yarn care instructions on the ball band.
