SIZES

To fit: UK ladies shoe size 5 to 6 (adjustable).

Ankle: Approx 23cm (9in)

Cuff to heel: Approx 7.5cm (3in) (adjustable)

Foot: Approx 26cm (10.25in)

YOU WILL NEED 

Artesano Definition Sock Yarn 75% Merino wool, 25% nylon (400m per 100g)

1 x 100g hank in Inferno 0042 

1 set of four 3.25mm double pointed knitting needles

2 stitch markers 

Note: Yarn amounts given are based on average requirements and are approximate.

TENSION

28 sts x 36 rows to 10cm (4in) square over st st using 3.25mm needles.

Use larger or smaller needles if necessary to obtain correct tension.

ABBREVIATIONS

kfb = knit into the front and back of the next st (1 st increase)

s4k = slip 4 sts knit wise (one at a time) and knit these 4 sts together through back loop

PATTERN NOTE

The socks are worked from the toe up. Sts are cast on for one side of the toe, then more sts are picked up and cast on into the original cast-on sts to form the other side of the toe. These are then joined to work in the round.

Using 3.25mm dpns, cast on 12 sts.

Next row (WS): Purl. Using a new needle, pick up and knit another 12 sts into the original 12 cast-on sts (24 sts). Place stitch marker to indicate beg/end of each round.

Toe

Work toe in mds on 2 needles only.

Rnd 1: K1, kfb, k7, kfb, k2, place stitch marker, k1, kfb, k7, kfb, k2 (28 sts). 

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3: K1, kfb, knit to 3 sts before marker, kfb, k2, sm, k1, kfb, knit to 3 sts before marker, sm, kfb, k2. 

Rnd 4: Knit.

The last 2 rnds set toe increases, repeat these 2 mds, (slipping both markers) until there are 56 sts.

Foot

Due to the stitch pattern, the stitch count will change. Only count the number of sts before or after rows 1 and 2 have been worked.

Left foot only

Rnd 1: P1, k2, yo, k2tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, ssk, yo, k2, (p1, k1) 5 times, p2tog, sm, knit to end (57 sts). 

Rnd 2: P1, k17, (p1, k1) 5 times, p1, sm, knit to end. 

Rnd 3: P1, k3, yo, k4tog, yo, k3, yo, s4k, yo, k3, (p1, k1) 5 times, p1, sm, knit to end (55 sts).

Rnd 4, 6 and 8: P1, k15, (p1, k1) 5 times, p1, sm, knit to end. 

Rnd 5: P1, k3, k2tog, yo, k5, yo, ssk, k3, (p1, k1) 5 times, p1, sm, knit to end.

Rnd 7: P1, k2, k2tog, yo, k7, yo, ssk, k2, (p1, k1) 5 times, p1, sm, knit to end. 

Rnd 9: P1, k1, k2tog, yo, k9, yo, ssk, k1, (p1, k1) 5 times, p1, sm, knit to end. 

Rnd 10: P1, k15, (p1, k1) 5 times, p1, sm, knit to end. 

Rnds 1 to 10 form patt but replace p2tog in rnd 1 with p1 for further repeats. Work these 10 rnds four times more.

Right foot only

Rnd 1: (P1, k1) 5 times, p1 (k2, yo, k2tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, ssk, yo, k2, p2tog, sm, knit to end (57 sts). 

Rnd 2: (P1, k1) 5 times, p1, k17, p1, sm, knit to end. 

Rnd 3: (P1, k1) 5 times, p1, k3, yo, k4tog, yo, k3, yo, s4k, yo, k3, p1, sm, knit to end (55 sts). 

Rnd 4, 6 and 8: (P1, k1) 5 times, p1, k15, p1, sm, knit to end. 

Rnd 5: (P1, k1) 5 times, p1, k3, k2tog, yo, k5, yo, ssk, k3, p1, sm, knit to end. 

Rnd 7: (P1, k1) 5 times, p1, k2, k2tog, yo, k7, yo, ssk, k2, p1, sm, knit to end. 

Rnd 9: (P1, k1) 5 times, p1, k1, k2tog, yo, k9, yo, ssk, k1, p1, sm, knit to end.

Rnd 10: (P1, k1) 5 times, p1, k15, p1, sm, knit to end. 

Rnds 1 to 10 form patt but replace p2tog in rnd 1 with p1 for further repeats. Work these 10 rnds four times more.

Both socks

Gusset

Note: Remember to work correct pattern appropriate for foot.

Gusset rnd 1: Work left or right pattern rnd 1 to next stitch marker (across top of foot), sm, k1, kfb, knit to 3 sts before end of rnd, kfb, k2 (59 sts). 

Gusset rnd 2: Work left or right pattern rnd 2 to next stitch marker (across top of foot), sm, knit to end.

These 2 rnds set cable pattern across top of foot.

Rep cable patt while working incs as set above until there are 75 sts on needles (working all 10 rnds of patt for appropriate foot twice) 

AND end last gusset round at 2nd stitch marker (Row 10 of patt worked across top of foot only) (75 sts).

Heel shaping

Next rnd: Knit 14 sts onto one needle, with a new needle ssk, k18, turn (19 sts). You will now work straight on these 19 sts only, leaving rem 14 sts for heel on next needle. 

Row 1 (WS): P2tog, purl to end.

Row 2: Ssk, knit to end.

Repeat these 2 rows until 8 sts remain and RS facing for next row. 

Next row: Sl 1, knit to end. Pick up and knit 11 sts over heel decreases just made.

Turn, sl 1 and purl across sts picked up and 8 sts remaining for heel. Now pick up and purl 11 sts down other side of heel decreases (30 sts). 

Row 1: *Sl 1 knit-wise, k1; rep from * to last 2 sts, k1, sl 1, sl 1 from next needle and and knit the 2 slipped sts together tbl. 

Row 2: Sl 1 purl-wise, purl to last st, sl 1, sl 1 from next needle and purl the 2 slipped sts together.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until all the sts have been used up and there are 30 sts across heel and the original 27 sts across top of foot, ending with row 1 (57 sts).

Cuff

Left foot only

Rnd 1: P1, k2, yo, k2tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, ssk, yo, k2, (p1, k1) 5 times, p1, sm, (k1, p1) 14 times, k2tog (56 sts). 

Rnd 2: P1, k17, (p1, k1) 5 times, p1, sm, (k1, p1) 14 times, k1. 

Rnd 3: P1, k3, yo, k4tog, yo, k3, yo, s4k, yo, k3, (p1, k1) 5 times, p1, sm, (k1, p1) 14 times, k1 (54 sts).

Work in rib as folls:

Rib rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end. Repeat rib rnd 1 until rib measures 2.5cm (lin). Cast off in rib. 

TO FINISH OFF

Fasten off any loose ends and press/block as instructed on ball band.
