Rico Creative Soft Wool Aran 75% acrylic, 25% wool (approx 300m per 100g)

3[4:4:4:5] x 100g balls in shade 016

1 pair each 4mm and 5mm needles

2 stitch holders

Note: Yarn amounts given are based on average requirements and are approximate.

TENSION

18 sts and 24 rows to 10cm over st st using 5mm needles.

20 sts and 24 rows to 10cm over broken rib using 5mm needles.

Use larger or smaller needles if necessary to obtain correct tension.

ABBREVIATIONS

C8 = slip next 2 sts to cn and hold at back of work, k2, k2 from cn, slip next 2 sts to cn and hold at front of work, k2, k2 from cn

BACK

With 4mm needles, cast on 89[99:109:119:129] sts.

Set broken rib

Row 1 (RS): P1, (k1, p1) to end.

Row 2: Purl.

These 2 rows form broken rib.

Work 2 more rows.

Set sloping cable patt

Change to 5mm needles.

Row 1 (RS): (P1, k1) 14[16:18:20:22] times, k2tog, p2, k8, p2, k1, m1, k3[5:7:9:11], m1, k1, p2, k8, p2, k2tog tbl, (k1, p1) 14(16:18:20:22] times.

Row 2: P29[33:37:41:45], k2, p8, k2, p7[9:11:13:15], k2, p8, k2, p to end.

Row 3: (P1, k1) 13(15:17:19:21] times, p1, k2tog, p2, k8, p2, k1, m1, k5[7:9:11:13], m1, k1, p2, k8, p2, k2tog tbl, p1, (k1, p1) to end.

Row 4: P28[32:36:40:44], k2, p8, k2, p9[11:13:15:17], k2, p8, k2, p to end.

Row 5: (P1, k1) 13(15:17:19:21] times, k2tog, P2, C8, p2, k1, m1, k7[9:11:13:15], m1, k1, p2, C8, p2, k2tog tbl, patt to end.

Row 6: P27[31:35:39:43], k2, p8, k2, p11 [13:15:17:19], k2, p8, k2, p to end.

Note: On last 6 rows, 1 rep of 6-row cable has been worked. On every RS row centre st st section is increased by 2 sts and broken rib patt is reduced by 1 st at each side. St count remains the same throughout.

Cont in this way, sloping the cables towards side edges by 1 st at each side until row:

(P1, k1) 7(9:11:13:15] times, p1, k2tog, p2, k8, p2, k1, m1, k29[31:33:35:37], ml, k1, p2, k8, p2, k2tog tbl, p1, (k1, p1) 7(9:11:13:15] times has been worked.

Cont in patt as now set, keeping cables, centre st st and broken rib straight until work meas 38cm (15in) at centre, ending after a WS row. Pm at centre of work.

Shape armholes

Loosely cast off 6[6:7:7:8] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 77(87:95:105:113] sts.

Dec 1 st at each end of next 3[5:7:9:9] rows, then on every foil alt row until 65(69:73:77:81] sts rem.

Work straight until work meas

17(18:19:21:22]cm (6 3/4[7:7 1/2:8 1/4:8 3/4]) from marker, ending after a WS row.

Shape shoulders

Loosely cast off 6(6:7:7:7] sts at beg of next 4 rows. 41(45:45:49:53] sts.

Loosely cast off 6[7:6:7:8] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 29(31:33:35:37] sts.

Slip rem sts to a holder and set aside.

FRONT

Work as Back until Front meas 16(18:20:22:24] rows fewer than Back up to shoulder shaping, ending after a WS row.

Shape neck

Next row: Work across 26(27:28:29:30] sts, turn.

Cont on this group of sts only for left half of neck.

Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 5 rows, then on 3 foll alt rows. 18(19:20:21:22] sts.

Work 4(6:8:10:12] rows straight, ending at armhole edge.

Shape shoulder

Cast off 6[6:7:7:7] sts at beg of next and foll alt row.

Work 1 row straight. 

Cast off rem 6[7:6:7:8] sts.

With RS facing, si centre 13(15:17:19:21] sts to a holder and leave.

Rejoin yarn neatly to rem 26(27:28:29:30] sts and work to end of row.

Complete as left half of neck, working 1 more row straight before shaping shoulder.

SLEEVES (MAKE 2)

With 4mm needles cast on 39(39:43:43:47] sts.

Row 1 (RS): K2, (p1, k1) to last st, k1.

Row 2: K1, (p1, k1) to end.

Rep these 2 rows until rib meas 6cm (2 1/4in) from beg, ending after row 2 and inc 1 st at centre of last row. 40(40:44:44:48] sts.

Set cable patt

Change to 5mm needles.

Row 1 (RS): (P1, k1) 2[2:3:3:4] times, p2, (k8, p2) 3 times, (k1, p1) to end.

Row 2: P4[4:6:6:8], k2, (p8, k2) 3 times, k2, p4[4:6:6:8].

Rows 3-4: As rows 1-2.

Row 5: (P1, k1) 2[2:3:3:4] times, p2, (C8, p2) 3 times, (k1, p1) to end.

Row 6: As row 2.

These 6 rows set patt.

Cont in patt, shaping Sleeve by inc 1 st at each end of next row, then on every foll 6[6:4:4:4]th row until there are 54(56:52:70:80] sts, then on every foll 6th row until there are 64(68:74:80:86] sts, working extra sts into broken rib.

Cont straight until Sleeve meas 44cm (17 1/2in), ending after a WS row.

Shape top

Loosely cast off 6[6:7:7:8] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 52(56:60:66:70] sts.

Dec 1 st at each end of next row and every foll alt row until 22(24:28:32:34] sts rem, then on every row until 16(18:22:26:28] sts rem. Cast off loosely.

NECKBAND

Join left shoulder. With 4mm needles and RS facing, k29[31:33:35:37] sts from Back neck holder inc 6 sts evenly, pick up and k18(19:21:22:24] sts evenly down left side of Front neck, k13[15:17:19:21] sts on Front neck holder inc 4 sts evenly, pick up and k19(20:22:23:25] sts evenly up right side of Front neck. 89(95:103:109:117] sts.

Change to 5mm needles.

Beg with a p row, work 6 rows in st st. Change to 4mm needles and work a further 6 rows in st st.

Cast off loosely.

TO FINISH

Join right shoulder and Neckband.

Sew in Sleeve tops.

Join side and Sleeve seams.
