FINISHED SIZE

One size (S-XL).

About 26 1/2" (675 cm) from shoulder to bottom of center front or back, excluding neckband.

YARN

Sportweight (#2 Fine).

Shown here: Sandnes Gam Tove (100% wool; 174 yd [160 m]/50 g): gray #1053, 10 balls.

NEEDLES

Sizes U.S. 6 and 8 (4 and 5 mm): 16" (40 cm) circular (cir).

Size U.S. 8 (5 mm): 32" (80 cm) cir.

Size U.S. 6 (4 mm): set of 5 double-pointed (dpn).

Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS

Markers (1 in a first color to mark beg of rnd, 4 of a second color to mark raglan seam lines, 2 of a third color to mark center sts of front and center back); stitch holders; tapestry needle.

GAUGE

19 sts and 30 mds = 4" (10 cm) in brioche pattern on size U.S. 8 (5 mm) needles.

NOTE

Place raglan and center markers in center st of each set of sts to be marked and move them up as work progresses.

BRIOCHE STITCH

K1, inserting tip of right needle in st below next st on tip of left needle, then slip st off tip of left needle. That stitch will loosen but will be held in place by the brioche st and will not ravel.

BRIOCHE PATTERN (multiple of 3 sts + 2)

RND 1: P2, *k1, p2; rep from * to end.

RND 2: P2, *brioche st, p2; rep from * to end. Repeat Rnds 1 and 2.

BRIOCHE PANEL (panel of 3 sts at raglan and center front and back)

RND 1: K1, p1, k1.

RND 2: Brioche st, p1, brioche st.

Repeat Rnds 1 and 2.

INCREASE A (inc-A)

Work (brioche st, yo, brioche st) in the same st—2 sts inc'd.

INCREASE B (inc-B)

With tip of left needle, lift the strand between the needles from front to back, then purl the lifted loop through the back—1 st inc'd.

Note: The poncho is worked from the top down.

With short smaller cir needle, CO 108 sts. Place marker (pm) and join for working in rnds, being careful not to twist sts.

Work in k2 p2 rib for 3 1/4" (8.5 cm).

Change to larger cir needle and set up patt as follows:

RND 1: P1, pm in this st for raglan, k1 (these are the last 2 of 3 Brioche Panel raglan sts), work 14 sts in brioche patt, k1, p1, pm in this st for center back, k1, work 14 sts in brioche patt, k1, p1, pm in this st for raglan, k1, work 17 sts in brioche patt for sleeve, k1, p1, pm in this st for raglan, k1, work 14 sts in brioche patt, k1, p1, pm in this st for center front, k1, work 14 sts in brioche patt, k1, p1, pm in this st for raglan, k1, 17 sts in brioche patt for sleeve, k1 (this is the first st of 3 Brioche Panel raglan sts).

Work 2 rnds even in established patt, keeping raglan sts and center front and back in Brioche Panel.

RND 4 (INC): *P1, inc-A, work in patt to 1 st before next marked st, inc-A; rep from * around— 24 sts inc'd.

Work 3 rnds even, working new sts into patt and purl each yo on inc rnd.

RND 8 (INC): *P1, inc-B, work in patt to next marked st, inc-B; rep from * around—12 sts inc'd.

RNDS 9-15: Work even in established patt.

Repeat Rnds 4-15 nine more times—468 sts, with 77 sts for each sleeve, 74 sts on each side of center front and back, 12 raglan sts, and 6 center sts.

Note: The new patt st counts can easily be made by counting the new brioche sts out from the marked sts. Change to a longer cir needle when necessary.

Piece should measure about 16 1/2" (42 cm) along center back, excluding neckband.

Working inc at center front and back, and at back and front raglan edges only, rep Rnds 4-15 three more times, then rep Rnds 4-8 once more, and inc at center front and back, and at back and front raglans only (16 sts inc'd each rep of Rnd 4, and 8 sts inc'd each rep of Rnd 8)—564 sts, with 77 sts for each sleeve, 98 sts each side of center front and back, 12 raglan sts, and 6 center sts.

DIVIDE BODY AND SLEEVES

NEXT RND: Work 203 back sts, place next 79 sts on holder for sleeve, work 203 front sts, place rem 79 sts on holder for sleeve—406 sts.

Rep Rnds 10-15 once, then rep Rnds 4-8 once more—418 sts. Piece should measure about 23 3/4" (60.5 cm) along center back, excluding neckband.

Cont even for 1 1/2" (3.8 cm) or until poncho is desired length.

BO loosely, adding a yo after every other brioche st as follows: yo, pass first st overyo and off needle, p1, pass yo over st and off needle.

sleeve cuffs

Return held sts for sleeve to dpn. Pm and join for working in rnds.

NEXT RND: Sl 1, *p2tog, brioche st; rep from * to last 3 sts, p2tog, pm for beg of rnd—53 sts rem.

NEXT RND: K2tog, k1, p2, (k2, p2) to end of rnd—52 sts rem.

Cont in k2, p2 rib until cuff measures 5 1/2" (14 cm) or desired length. BO in rib.

finishing

Weave in ends. Sew underarm seams. Block to finished measurements.
