MATERIALS

Bulky Merino by Koigu Wool Designs, 3 1/2oz/100g hanks, each approx 93yd/85m (wool)

6 hanks in #1112 peach paint

One size 11 (8mm) circular needle, 40"/100cm long OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

One size 10 1/2 (6.5mm) circular needle, 16"/40cm long

Split ring stitch markers, stitch holders

One 1 3/8-inch (34mm) button style #46219 by La Mode

MEASUREMENTS

Lower edge 59"/150.5cm 

Back length 19"/48cm 

GAUGE 12 sts and 16 rows to 4"/10cm over chart pat st using size 11 (8mm) needle.

TAKE TIME TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

SLOPED BIND-OFF

1. * One row before the next bind-off row, work to the last st of the row. Do NOT work this st. Turn work.

2. Wyib, sl first st from left needle purlwise.

3. Pass unworked st of previous row over the slipped st. The first st is bound off. Cont to bind off desired number of sts for that row. Work to end of row. Rep from * until bind-off is complete.

SLOPED GAST-ON

(Not used for the initial cast on of pieces, but for all the other cast-ons after initial cast-on row.) On row preceding cast-on row, sl the last st wyib on RS and wyif on WS. Turn work and using cable cast-on, cast on the required number of sts at the beg of the row.

BODY

Beg at lower edge with larger circular needle, cast on 179 sts.

Row 1 (RS) Knit.

Row 2 Purl.

Row 3 (RS) K1, [p1, k1] 21 times; (p1, k2, p1)for the side rib, pm; [k1, p1] 42 times, k1, (p1, k2, p1) for the side rib; [p1, k1] 21 times, k1.

Row 4 Work even in established rib to 2 sts before marker, k2tog removing marker, rib to end—178 sts.

Beg body chart pat

Row 1 (RS) K1 (selvage st), work the 14- st rep for 3 reps, (p1, k2, p1) for the side rib, work the 14-st rep for 6 reps, (p1, k2, p1) for side rib, p2tog, then beg with st 2, work to the end of the rep line, then work the 14-st rep for 2 more reps, AT THE SAME TIME, work a kfb in the 2nd to the last st at end of row, then k1 (selvage st)—178 sts. The pat st has been set up and adjusted (to cont with the rib) and 1 St st selvage st is worked at beg and end of every row.

Row 2 P1 (selvage st), work row 2 of the 14-st rep for 3 reps, (k1, p2, k1) for side rib, work the 14-st rep for6 reps, (k1, p2, k1 )for side rib, work the 14-st rep for 3 reps, p1 (selvage st). Work rows 3-18 of body chart (with established side ribs) once, then work rows 1-18 once more.

Beg sleeve slit opening

Note Work the bind-offs and cast-ons using the sloped method.

Row 1 (RS) Work 25 sts, join a 2nd ball of yarn, bind off 3 sts; work to last 25 sts, join 3rd ball of yarn and cast on 3 sts, work to end. Work the 3 segments with 3 balls of yarn all at same time.

Row 2 Work segment 1; on segment 2, bind off 3 sts, work to end of segment 2; on segment 3, cast on 3 sts, work to end.

Rows 3-12 Rep (rows 1 and 2) 5 times more.

Row 13 (RS) Work row 13 of pat to end of the segment, then to trim the sleeve slit, * using smaller circular needle, pick up and k 40 sts evenly along the newly formed slit, turn and bind off these picked up sts knitwise*, work to the 2nd sleeve slit, rep between **s to trim the sleeve slit, work to end of row.

Row 14 Work to end of row across all sts, joining the 3 segments to work in one piece as before.

Shape shoulder

Dec row 1 (chart row 15) (RS) *Work to 1 st before the 4-st side rib, p2tog tbl, k2, p2tog; rep from * once more, work to end—4 sts dec'd.

Dec row 2 (chart row 16) (WS) *Work to 1 st before the 4-st side rib, k2tog, p2, SKP; rep from * once more—4 sts dec'd.

Dec rows 3 and 4 Rep dec rows 1 and 2 foil chart rows 17 and 18.

Dec rows 5-14 Rep dec rows 1 and 2 foll chart rows 1-10. There are 122 sts at end of chart row 14 with 29 sts in each front and 56 sts in the back between the 2 side ribs.

Shape neck

Note The neck shaping, worked by binding off at the beg of each RS or WS row, will take place simultaneously with the continuing shoulder shaping.

Using the sloped bind-off, bind off 5 sts at beg of the next 2 rows, 3 sts at beg of the next 2 rows, 2 sts at beg of the next 4 rows, AT SAME TIME, work dec rows 1 and 2 over the next 5 rows, then cont to shape as foll:

Dec row 3 (WS) "Work to 2 sts before the 4-st side rib, k3tog, p2, SK2P; rep from * once more—8 sts dec'd. 

Dec row 4 (RS) Rep dec row 1—4 sts dec'd. 

Dec rows 5-10 Rep (dec rows 3 and 4) 3 times more—30 sts rem at end of row 10. Cut yarn.

FINISHING

Neck trim

Next row (RS) With smaller circular needle, pick up and k 17 sts from right front, then k across the sts on needle by [k4, k2tog] 5 times, pick up and k 17 sts from left front neck—59 sts. Knit 1 row, purll row. Bind off knitwise.

Left front trim

With smaller circular needle, omitting the neck trim, pick up and k 46 sts (working into the center of the st only so that only V& of the st, not the whole selvage st, is worked into along the left front edge}. Knit 1 row. Bind off purlwise.

Tab

With smaller needle, cast on 9 sts.

Row 1 (RS) K to last st, sl 1 wyib.

Row 2 K to last st, sl 1 wyif.

Rows 3 and 4 Rep rows 1 and 2.

Buttonhole row K3, bind off 3 sts, k to last st, sl 1 wyib.

Next row K to buttonhole, cast on 3 sts, k to last st, sl 1 wyif.

Knit 8 rows more. SI sts to a st holder.

Right front trim

First, pm at 4"/10cm from the top edge and place a 2nd marker at 2 1.2"/6.5cm from the first. Then with smaller circular needle, pick up and k 25 sts to the first marker, then pick up and k 9 sts simultaneously from the front edge and from the 9-st tab held at back (to "lock in" the tab to the front), then pick up and k 12 sts to end of front. K 1 row. Bind off purlwise. Sew on button at 1 3/4"/4.5cm from center left front to line up with the tab. Reinforce the slit trims with the attached yarns before weaving in the ends.

TIP: The buttonhole tab is knit separately and sewn on; position it anywhere you want to. Make one or two additional tabs if desired.
