Sizes

Instructions are given for smallest size, with larger sizes in parentheses. When only 1 number is given, it applies to all sizes.

Rowan Kid Classic (worsted weight; 70% lambswool/22% kid mohair/8% polyamide; 153 yds/50g per ball):

8 (8, 9, 10, 11) balls bitter sweet #866

Size 6 (4mm) double-point needles (set of 2)

Gauge

19 sts and 25 rows = 4 inches/10cm in St st with larger needles.

To save time, take time to check gauge.

Special Abbreviations

Slip marker (sm): Slip marker from LH to RH needle.

3 over 3 Right Cross (3/3 RC): Slip next 3 sts to cn and hold in back; k3, k3 from cn.

3 over 3 Left Cross (3/3 LC): Slip next 3 sts to cn and hold in front; k3, k3 from cn.

Make 1 Left (M1L): Insert LH needle from front to back under horizontal strand between last st worked and next st on LH needle; knit through back of resulting loop.

Make 1 Right (M1R): Insert LH needle from back to front under horizontal strand between last st worked and next st on LH needle; knit through front of resulting loop.

Slip, slip, purl (ssp): Slip 2 sts 1 at a time kwise to RH needle; return sts to LH needle in turned position and p2tog-tbl—a left-leaning single dec.

Pattern Stitches

K2, P3 Rib (multiple of 5 sts + 2)

Row 1 (RS): K2, *p3, k2; rep from * to end.

Row 2: P2, *k3, p2; rep from * to end. Rep Rows 1 and 2 for pat.

Cable (38-st panel)

Note: A chart is provided for those preferring to work Cable pat st from a chart.

Rows 1, 3 and 7 (RS): P3, k12, p8, k12, p3.

Row 2 and all WS rows: K3, p12, k8, p12, k3.

Row 5: P3, 3/3 RC, 3/3 LC, p8, 3/3 RC, 3/3 LC, p3.

Row 8: K3, p12, k8, p12, k3.

Rep Rows 1-8 for pat.

Special Technique

l-Cord: Using dpns, cast on 4 sts, do not turn, *slide sts to other end of needle, pull yarn across back, k4; rep from * until cord is desired length. Bind off kwise.

Pattern Notes

Sweater is worked from the bottom up in separate pieces, then seamed. I-Cords are woven through the cables and tied at the bottom.

Decrease at front and back edges as follows: On right-side rows, work k2, ssk at beginning of row and k2tog, k2 at end.

Decrease at armhole, neck and sleeve cap edges as follows: On right-side rows, work k1, k2tog at beginning of row and ssk, k1 at end. On wrong-side rows, work p1, ssp at beginning of row and p2tog, pi at end.

Increase at sleeve edges as follows: On right-side rows, work k2, M1R at beginning of row and M1L, k2 at end.

Back

Ribbing

With larger needles, cast on 112 (122, 132, 142, 152) sts.

Work 22 rows in K2, P3 Rib, ending with a WS row.

Body

Row 1 (RS): Knit dec 12 (12,14,16, 16) sts evenly across—100 (110, 118, 126, 136) sts.

Work 9 rows in St st, ending with a WS row.

Dec 1 st at each end of next row, then [every 12 rows] 5 times—88 (98, 106, 114, 124) sts.

Work even until piece measures 19 inches, ending with a WS row.

Shape Armholes

Bind off 4 (4, 5, 5, 5) sts at beg of next 2 rows—80 (90, 96, 104, 114) sts.

Dec 1 st at each end of next 3 (3, 5, 5, 7) rows, then [every RS row] 2 (3, 3, 5, 5) times—70 (78, 80, 84, 90) sts.

Work even until armholes measure 8 (8, 816, 9, 9) inches, ending with a WS row.

Shape Shoulders

Bind off 7 (8, 8, 9,10) sts at beg of next 2 rows, 7 (8, 9, 10, 10) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Place rem 42 (46, 46, 46, 50) sts on holder for back neck.

Front

Ribbing

With larger needles, cast on 112 (122, 132, 142, 152) sts.

Work 21 rows in K2, P3 Rib, ending with a RS row.

Next row (WS): Continuing in rib as established, work 37 (42,47, 52, 57) sts, pm, work 38 sts, pm, work to end of row.

Body

Set-up row (RS): Knit to first marker and dec 2 (3, 4, 4, 5) sts evenly; sm, work Row 1 of 38-st Cable panel, sm; knit to end of row and dec 2 (3, 4, 4, 5) sts evenly—108 (116, 124, 134, 142) sts.

Work 9 rows even, working sts between markers in Cable pat and all other sts in St st.

Dec 1 st at each end of next row, then [every 12 rows] 5 times—96 (104, 112, 122, 130) sts.

Work even until piece measures 19 inches, ending with a WS row.

Shape Armholes

Bind off 4 (4, 5, 5, 5) sts at beg of next 2 rows—88 (96, 102, 112, 120) sts.

Dec 1 st at each end of next 3 (3, 5, 5, 7) rows, then [every RS row] 2 (3, 3, 5, 5) times—78 (84, 86, 92, 96) sts.

Work even until armholes measure 5 1/2 (5 1/2, 6, 6 1/2, 6 1/2) inches, ending on any WS row except Row 4.

Shape Neck & Shoulders

Division row (RS): Knit to marker; place center 38 sts on holder for front neck; join 2nd ball of yarn and knit to end of row—20 (23, 24, 27, 29) sts each side.

Working both sides at once with separate balls of yarn, dec 1 st at each neck edge [every row] 4 times, then [every RS row] 2 (3, 3,4, 5) times—14 (16, 17, 19, 20) sts each side.

Work even until armholes measure same as back to shoulder.

Shape shoulders as for back.

Sleeves

Ribbing

With larger needles, cast on 52 (52, 57, 57, 57) sts.

Work 8 rows in K2, P3 Rib, ending with a WS row.

Body

Next row (RS): Knit and dec 5 (5, 6, 4, 4) sts evenly across—47 (47, 51, 53, 53) sts. Work 5 rows in St st.

Inc 1 st at each end of next row, then [every 8 rows] 8 times—65 (65, 69, 71, 71) sts.

Work even until piece measures 14 inches, ending with a WS row.

Shape Cap

Bind off 4 (4, 5, 5, 5) sts at beg of next 2 rows—57 (57, 59, 61, 61) sts.

Dec 1 st at each end of next 3 rows, then [every RS row] 11 (11, 12, 13, 13) times, then [every row] 5 times—19 sts. Bind off rem sts.

Finishing

Block pieces to measurements.

Sew right shoulder seam.

Neckband

With RS facing and using larger needle, knit across sts from back-neck holder and inc 0 (1, 1, 1, 2) st(s) evenly; pick up and knit 16 sts along left front neck edge; work in established Cable pat across 38 sts from front neck holder; pick up and knit 16 sts along right front neck edge—112 (117, 117, 117, 122) sts.

Row 1 (WS): K1, *k3, p2; rep from * to last st, k1.

Row 2: P1, *k2, p3; rep from * to last st, p1.

Rep last 2 rows until neckband measures 2 1/2 inches, ending with a RS row.

Bind off all sts loosely in pat.

Assembly

Sew left shoulder and neckband seam. Set in sleeves.

Sew sleeve and side seams.

Weave in ends.

I-Cord Ties

With dpns, make 2 I-Cords each 50 inches long.

Referring to tutorial (see page 84) as a guide throughout, thread an end of the first I-Cord through the "gap" created by last cable worked before neck shaping. Tack in place on WS of front.

Weave I-Cord through the gap on every other cable crossing to hemline.

Thread an end of the 2nd I-Cord through the gap on the opposite Cable panel and tack in place as before.

Weave this I-Cord through every other cable crossing to hemline, crossing the first I-Cord at center of panel.

Tie I-Cords tog at hemline.

Designer's TIP

If making long I-cords is not your favorite thing to do, consider purchasing one of the many I-cord tools on the market. They will certainly make short work of the process.
