Instructions are given for smallest size, with larger sizes in parentheses. When only 1 number is given, it applies to all sizes.

16 1/2 sts and 23 rows = 4 inches/10cm in Cable & Eyelet pat, using larger needles, after dropping sts (blocked).
Note: The ladder from each dropped st is counted as a st when measuring gauge.
To save time, take time to check gauge.
3 over 2 Left Cross (3/2 LC): Sl 3 sts to cn and hold in front; k2, k3 from cn.
Cable & Eyelet (multiple of 11 sts)
Note: A chart is provided for those preferring to work Cable & Eyelet pat st from a chart.
Row 1 (RS): *K1, k2tog, yo, k3, 3/2 LC; rep from * to end.
Row 2 and all WS rows: *P6, p2tog, yo, p3; rep from * to end.
Rows 3, 5 and 7: *K1, k2tog, yo, k8; rep from * to end.
Row 8: Rep Row 2.
Rep Rows 1-8 for pat.
2x2 Rib (multiple of 4 sts)
All rnds: *K2, p2; rep from * to end.
Body of shrug is worked back and forth in 1 piece. Stitches are dropped on the bind-off row, then unraveled down to the cast-on row. Stitches are picked up for the collar and cuffs and worked in the round.
With larger needles, cast on 57 (68, 68, 79, 79) sts.
Purl 1 row.
Row 1 (RS): K1 (edge st, keep in St st), work Cable & Eyelet pat to last st, k1 (edge st, keep in St st).
Work even until you have completed 23 (25, 27, 29, 31) vertical reps of Cable & Eyelet pat; piece should measure approx 28 1/4 (30 3/4, 33 1/4, 35 3/4, 38 1/4) inches.
Bind-off row (RS): K1, *drop 1 st, bind off 4 sts, drop 1 st, bind off 6 sts; rep from * to last st, bind off 1 st. Fasten off. Unravel dropped sts back to cast-on edge.
Block to measurements.
With RS facing, fold piece in half lengthwise. Sew side seams for 6 (6 3/4, 7 1/2, 8 1/4, 9) inches in from each end, leaving 20 (21 1/4, 22 1/2, 23 3/4, 25 1/4) inches unsewn in center.
With RS facing, using smaller circular needle and beg at 1 side seam, pick up and knit 1 st per row [approx 224 (240, 244, 256, 264) sts] around open center edge of body; pm for beg of rnd and join.
Note: Exact st count isn't essential, but must be a multiple of 4 sts.
Work in 2x2 Rib for 4 3/4 inches. Bind off all sts loosely in pat.
With RS facing, using dpns and beg at side seam, pick up and knit 1 st per st along bind-off row, skipping ladders from dropped sts; pm for beg of rnd and join.
Work in 2x2 Rib for 4 3/4 inches. Bind off all sts loosely in pat. Rep for opposite edge. Weave in ends.
