MATERIALS

Rowan Yarns Cotton Glace fine (sport) weight cotton yarn (1 3/4 oz/126 yds/50g per ball (2)):

8 [9, 10] balls #864 greengage

Sizes D/3/3.25mm and I/9/5.5mm crochet hooks or size needed to obtain gauge

Stitch marker

Tapestry needle

Wooden beads with large holes: 4 (optional)

GAUGE

Size I hook: 2 shells plus 2 sc = 4 inches; 8 rows = 4 inches

PATTERN NOTES

Garment is made in 2 pieces worked side to side from the center to the wrist and is intended to be oversized. Choose size based on bust measurement.

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Chain-6 at beginning of row counts as first single crochet and chain-5 unless otherwise stated.

Chain-2 and double crochet at end of row counts as last chain-5 space unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCHES

First foundation single crochet (first foundation sc): Ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo, pull up a lp, yo, pull through 1 lp on hook (see illustration A—ch-1 completed), yo, pull through both lps on hook (see illustrations B and C—sc completed). 

Next foundation single crochet (next foundation sc): [Insert hook in last ch-1 made (see illustration A), yo, pull up a lp, yo, pull through 1 lp on hook (see illustration B—ch-1 completed), yo, pull through both lps on hook (see illustrations C and D—sc completed)] as indicated in instructions.

Shell: 7 dc in indicated sp.

COVER-UP

Side Make 2.

Foundation row (RS): With size I hook, work first foundation sc (see Special Stitches), work 143 [167, 191] next foundation sc (see Special Stitches), turn. (144 [168, 192] sc)

Rows 1 & 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 6 (see Pattern Notes), sk first 3 sc, sc in next sc, *ch 5, sk next 3 sc, sc in next sc, rep from * across, turn. (37 [43, 49] sc, 36 [42, 48] ch-5 sps)

Row 4 (RS): Ch 5, sc in first ch-5 sp, *shell (see Special Stitches) in next ch-5 sp, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp, rep from * across to last 2 ch-5 sps, shell in next ch-5 sp, sc in last ch-5 sp, ch 2, dc (see Pattern Notes) in first ch of beg ch-6, turn. Place marker for RS. (12 [14, 16] shells, 13 [15, 17] ch-5 sps)

Row 5: Ch 6, sc in 2nd dc of first shell, ch 5, sk next 3 dc, sc in 6th dc of same shell, ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp, *ch 5, sc in 2nd dc of next shell, ch 5, sk next 3 dc, sc in 6th dc of same shell, ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp, rep from * across, turn. (36 [42, 48] ch-5 sps)

Rep rows 4 and 5 until piece measures 18 [21, 25] inches from beg, ending with row 1. Fasten off.

Finishing

Wet-block Sides to finished measurements. With RS of foundation rows held tog, sew center front 8 [11, 14] inches from bottom edge (front) and center back 10 [13, 16] inches from bottom edge (back), leaving rem sts unsewn for neck opening. Try on Cover-Up and adjust neck opening as needed before fastening off.

Cord Make 2.

With size D hook, work as many chs as needed for 21-inch Cord or double the desired length. Working in top lps, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off. Weave in ends and give Cord a slight tug to straighten.

Optional: Thread ends of Cord through beads and knot the ends.

Thread Cord through sps on front and back outer edges approximately 7 inches from bottom edge. Tie to close.

Optional Armholes

Option 1: Match front to back at side edges. Measure 5 inches from side edge. Sew seam from the bottom edge up, leaving 9 [9 1/2, 10] inches or desired length open for armhole. Rep on other side.

Option 2: Tack front to back at side seams 9 [9 1/2, 10] inches below shoulder to create armhole, leaving remainder of side open.

Rep on other side. Embellish with buttons at tacking, if desired.
