Size 36/38 (40/42, 44/46)

Instructions are given for first size. Figures in parenthesis refer to larger sizes. When only one figure is given, it applies to all sizes.

Materials

650 (700, 750) g of Lana Grossa Portofino (60% cotton, 40% polyamide; 115 m/50 g) in Lilac (col 8).

Size 3.5, 4 and 4.5 mm needles; size 4 mm circular needle, 40 cm long; cable needle [cn].

Rib pattern: K1, p1.

Waffle stitch: Multiple of 3 + 2 selvage sts. Work according to chart 3. Numbers at right edge of chart indicate RS rows; on WS rows, purl all sts and yos. Beg chart pat with st before first arrow, work 3 sts between arrows for pat repeat, end with sts after 2nd arrow. Repeat rows 1 - 4 throughout.

Diamond cable panel: Worked over 21 sts according to chart 1. Numbers at right edge of chart indicate RS rows; on WS rows, work sts as they appear. Repeat rows 1 - 28 throughout.

Fisherman's rib: Odd number of sts. Work according to chart 2. Number at right edge of chart indicates RS row, number at left edge of chart indicates WS row. Repeat rows 1 and 2 throughout.

Note: 1 st and 1 yo are treated as 1 st.

Gauges: On size 4.5 mm needles, 16 sts and 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm in waffle st; 21 sts and 26 rows of diamond cable panel = 9 x 10 cm; 20 sts and 31 rows = 10 x 10 cm in Fisherman's rib.

Instructions

Sweater is worked in one piece across shoulders, beginning at lower edge of front. With size 4 mm needles, cast on 97 (103, 109) sts for front.

Next WS row:

For size 36/38 and 44/46, selvage st, p1, * k1, p1; rep from * to last st, selvage st.

For size 40/42, selvage st, k1, * p1, k1; rep from 4 to last st, selvage st.

Work in rib pat as established for 5 cm, inc 8 sts evenly across last WS row = 105 (111, 117) sts. Note that last WS row of rib pat is shown at bottom of chart 1.

Change to size 4.5 mm needles.

Next RS row: Work row 1 of chart 1, beg with selvage st, work waffle st over next 21 (24, 27) sts [see chart 3], work diamond cable panel over next 21 sts, work in Fisherman's rib over next 19 sts [see chart 2], work diamond cable panel over next 21 sts, work waffle st over next 21 (24, 27) sts [see chart 3], selvage st.

Work in pat as established until front measures 19 (20, 21) cm from cast-on, ending with a WS row.

Shape sides and sleeves: Inc 1 st at beg and end of next RS row, then every foll RS row 5 times. Next, cast on 2 sts at beg of next 14 rows, 3 sts at beg of next 10 rows, 4 sts at beg of next 6 rows, 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 7 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 16 sts at beg of next 2 rows = 255 (261, 267) sts. Work increased sts into waffle st. Cont until front measures 56 (57, 58) cm from cast-on, ending with a WS row.

Shape neck: Bind off center 49 sts on next RS row.

On foll WS row, cast on 49 sts over bound-off sts. Next, work back from shoulders down to lower edge same as for front, matching cast-on and increased sts for side and sleeve shaping of front with bind-offs and decreases.

When back measures 51 (52, 53) cm from shoulders, work in rib pat same as for front for 5 cm, dec 8 sts evenly across first row = 105 (111, 117) sts. Bind off all sts in rib.

Finishing

Pin piece to measurements and block.

Neck band: With size 4 mm circular needle, pick up and knit 94 sts around neck edge, join for working in rnds. Matching the knit sts of the rib pat to the knit sts of Fisherman's rib at center of back and front neck edge, work in rib pat for 18 rnds. Bind off all sts in rib. Fold neck band in half to WS and sew down. With size 3.5 mm needles, pick up and knit 70 sts along left sleeve edge and work in rib pat for 7 rows. Bind off all sts in rib. Repeat along right sleeve edge. Sew side and sleeve seams.
