Gauge: In cable patterns, 18 sts & 22 rows = 4"/10cm.

To save time, take time to check gauge.

Abbreviations:

LT - With RH needle behind work, knit 2nd stitch on LH needle through the back loop, leave stitch on needle, then knit first stitch through back loop, slip both sts from needle.

RT - Purl 2nd stitch on LH needle, leave stitch on needle, purl first stitch, slip both stitches from needle.

TECHNICAL TIP: Use your index finger on the RS, and thumb on the WS, to hold the first of the worked stitches (the 2nd stitch on the LH needle) out of the way once it has been worked. On RS, to knit in the back loop of the 1 st stitch on the LH needle, insert RH needle into stitch as if to purl and slide RH needle over the tip of the LH needle, enabling you to knit in the back loop.

BEYOND THE PATTERN: I designed this cardigan as a departure from the traditional style cardigan in that the body is worked as a single piece with no shaping for the armholes other than a 4 stitch gap on eilher side of the back section. There is also a generously sized collar and the sleeves are knitted in a modified dropped shoulder as illustrated in the schematic. The pattern includes 2 mock cable designs, a Braided Mock Cable Rib along each front section and a Mock Cable across the remaining part of the cardigan.

Body

TECHNICAL TIP: When casting on stitches I find it helpful to use markers to mark every 25 or 50 sts. Also, if you find that your cast-on stitches are too loose, try using a smaller size needle for your cast on; or if your stitches tend to be too tight, then use a larger needle.

CO 178 (198, 214, 234, 250) and work 6 rows of Seed stitch.

Row 1 (RS): Work 3 Seed sts, pm, work Row 1 of Braided Mock Cable Rib over next 13 sts, repeat Row 1 of Mock Cable to last 16 sts, work Row 1 of Braided Mock Cable Rib over next 13 sts, pm, then work 3 Seed sts.

Row 2 (WS): Work 3 Seed sts, sm, work Row 2 of Braided Mock Cable rib over next 13 sts, repeat Row 2 of Mock Cable to last 16 sts, work Row 2 of Braided Mock Cable Rib over next 13 sts, sm, then work 3 Seed sts.

Row 3: Work 3 Seed sts, sm, work Row 1 of Braided Mock Cable Rib over next 13 sts, repeat Row 3 of Mock Cable to last 16 sts, work Row 1 of Braided Mock Cable Rib over next 13 sts, sm, then work 3 Seed sts.

Row 4: Work 3 Seed sts, sm, work Row 2 of Braided Mock Cable Rib over next 13 sts, repeat Row 4 of Mock Cable to last 16 sts, work Row 2 of Braided Mock Cable Rib over next 13 sts, sm, then work 3 seed sts.

Cont to rep Rows 1-4 until cardigan meas 17 (17.5, 18, 18.5, 19)", ending with aWSrow.

DESIGNER NOTE - PLACING MARKERS: When measuring your cenler stitches it is wise to measure the 1" opening from the cenler of one p2 rib to the center of the next p2 rib. This will make it easier to attach your sleeves if you have a purl stitch on each side of the armhole opening on the RS and a knit stitch on each side of the armhole opening on the WS.

Measure out and mark the center 14 (15, 17, 19, 21)" and then mark "on each side of those markers.

Next Row: Cont in pat as est to first marker, add another ball of yarn, bind off 4 sts; work across to next marker, add another ball of yarn and bind off another 4 sts. Cont in pat and work all 3 sides even until armhole measures 8 (8.5, 9, 9.5, 10)", ending with a WS row.

Next Row: Work across to opening and CO 4 sts, finish off one ball of yarn and work across to next opening, CO another 4 sts finishing off the next ball of yarn, leaving just one ball of yarn. Work even until cardigan measures 8" above top of armhole opening. Work 6 rows of Seed st and BO off all sts in pat across last row.

Sleeves (Make 2)

CO 60 (60, 64, 64, 68) sts and work 6 rows of Seed st, and on last row inc 8 (8, 8, 10, 10) sts evenly spaced across row.

DESIGNER NOTE - SELVEDGE: When beginning the mock cable pattern starl with a single purl stitch at the beginning and end of each RS row and a single knit stitch at the beginning and end of each WS row. Add your increase stilches between this selvedge stitch and the pattern.

Work Mock Cable pattern adding 1 st each side every 8th row until you have 88 (92, 96, 100, 104) sts.

DESIGNER NOTE - SLEEVE SHAPING: Note the shape of the sleeve in the schematic. Mirrored M1 increases are made at each side every 8th row, i.e. right slanting M1 increases should be used at the rigid selvedge and left slanting M1 increases should be used at the left selvedge.

Work even until sleeve meas 20 (20, 21, 22, 22)", then BO all stitches.

Finishing

Sew sleeve seam and attach to body. Weave in yarn tails and block.
