TENSION

27 sts and 27 rows to 10cm over Astrakhan Stitch on 3mm needles

CHART NOTES

When following the chart, don't work the orange stitches: work to first st before orange st, take yarn to opposite side of work between the needles, slip next st purlwise from the LH needle to the RH needle, return yarn to original side of work (wrapping the st), return slipped st to LH needle without twisting.

Turn work and start next row, leaving any remaining sts unworked. When you come to work back across the wrapped stitches, work the wrap and the stitch together.

STITCH PATTERNS

1x1 RIB

Worked over an odd number of sts:

Row 1 (RS): (K1, P1) to last st, K1.

Row 2 (WS): P1, (K1, P1) to last st.

Worked over an even number of sts:

Row 1 (RS): (K1, P1) to end.

Row 2 (WS): (P1, K1) to end.

ASTRAKHAN STITCH

Rows 1 and 3 (RS): Purl.

Row 2 (WS): K1, *3 sts in 1, P3tog; rep from * to last st, K1.

Row 4: K1, *P3tog, 3 sts in 1; rep from * to last st, K1.

PATTERN NOTE

If you wish to add length to this garment, work extra depth in Astrakhan Stitch before casting off the Back and Front pieces, remembering to work the same number of extra rows for both pieces.

BACK

Using 2.5mm needles cast on 113 (121:133:145) sts.

Work in 1x1 rib for 12 rows, increasing 1 st on last row.

114 (122:134:146) sts.

Work should measure 3cm.

Change to 3mm needles.

Cont in Astrakhan st until work meas 27 (28:28:29) cm from cast-on edge, ending with a WS row.

76 (80:80:82) row's worked in total from cast-on edge.

Cast off all sts.

FRONT

Work as for Back.

Set Back and Front pieces aside until Finishing section.

YOKE

Note: The yoke is worked as a separate piece and then grafted to the Front and Back pieces when finishing.

Measurements are taken along the left hand edge, which is the side with 5 sts in rev st st.

Using 3.5mm needles and waste yarn, cast on 55 sts.

Change to main yarn and follow the Cable pattern from the Chart working the short row shaping as indicated (see Chart Notes).

START OF LEFT ARMHOLE

When work measures 20 1/2 (22 1/2:24 1/2:27) cm, ending with a WS row, place a st marker or a length of waste yarn in the last st to mark the end of the first half of the Back and the start of the left armhole, then cont in the Cable pattern.

END OF LEFT ARMHOLE

When work measures 46 1/2 (50 1/2:56 1/2:63)cm, ending with a WS row, place a st marker or a length of waste yarn in the last st to mark the end of the left armhole and the start of the Front, then cont in the Cable pattern.

START OF RIGHT ARMHOLE

When work measures 87 1/2 (95 1/2:105 1/2:117) cm, ending with a WS row, place a st marker or a length of waste yarn in the last st to mark the end of the Front and the start of the right armhole, then cont in the Cable pattern.

END OF RIGHT ARMHOLE

When work measures 113 1/2 (123 1/2:137.5:153) cm, ending with a WS row, place a st marker or a length of waste yarn in the last st to mark the end of the right armhole and the start of the remaining half of the Back, then cont in the Cable pattern.

END OF BACK

When work measures 134 (146:162:180)cm, ending with a WS row, cast off all sts.

FINISHING

With RS facing and using 3.5mm needles, pick up and knit 57 (63:69:77) sts across each marked armhole, turn work and cast off knitwise on WS.

With RS facing and using 3.5mm needles, pick up and knit 172 (188:209:231) sts around the neck edge, turn work and cast off knitwise on WS.

Block pieces gently, following any yarn care instructions on the ball band.

Join the cast-on and cast-off edges of the yoke, using false grafting (see Special Abbreviations) or back stitch.

Join the top of the Back and the Front to the yoke, placing the seam at centre back.

Sew the side seams of the sweater using mattress stitch or back stitch.

Weave in all ends.
