YARN Schachenmayr Catania Denim (100% cotton; 137 yd [125 m]/1 3/4 oz [50 g]):

#0172 olive, 3 (4, 4, 5, 5, 6) balls.

NEEDLES Body-size 8 (5 mm): 24-32" circular (cir), depending on size you are making. Neckband—size 7 (4.5 mm): 16" circular (cir).

Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS Markers (m); stitch holders; tapestry needle.

GAUGE 19 sts and 22 rows = 4" in St st on larger needles; 19 sts and 22 rows = 4" in lace patt on larger needles.

NOTES

This tank is worked back and forth in one piece to the underarms, then the front and backs are worked separately.

A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches.

During shaping, if there are not enough stitches to work a decrease with its companion yarnover, work the remaining stitch in stockinette instead.

Body

With larger needle, CO 152 (170, 186, 204, 220, 244) sts. Do not join. Knit 4 rows, ending with a WS row.

NEXT ROW (RS) K4, place marker (pm), work Right Bias Lace patt (see Stitch Guide) over 34 (38, 42, 46, 50, 56) sts (for left back), pm, k76 (86, 94, 104, 112, 124) sts (for front), pm, work Left Bias Lace patt over 34 (38, 42, 46, 50, 56) sts (for right back), pm, k4.

NEXT ROW (WS) K4, si m, purl to last m, sl m, k4. Cont in patt as established until piece measures 11 (11 1/2, 12, 12 1/2, 13, 13 1/2)" from CO, measured at center front, ending with a WS row.

DIVIDE FOR FRONT AND BACKS:

NEXT ROW (RS) Work in patt over 24 (28, 30, 32, 34, 40) sts and place these sts on holder for left back, BO 18 (18, 21, 23, 26, 26) sts, removing m, k68 (78, 84, 94, 100, 112) sts and place these sts on holder for front, BO 18 (18, 21, 23, 26, 26) sts, removing m, work in patt to end—24 (28, 30, 32, 34, 40) sts rem for right back.

Right Back

Work even until armhole measures 5 (5, 5 1/4, 5 3/4, 5 3/4, 5 3/4)", ending with a RS row.

SHAPE NECK: At beg of WS rows, BO 4 sts once, then BO 2 sts 6 (7, 8, 8, 9, 11) times—8 (10,10,12, 12,14) sts rem. Work 1 row even. BO all sts.

Left Back

Return 24 (28, 30, 32, 34, 40) left back sts to needle and, with WS facing, rejoin yarn. Work even until armhole measures 5 (5, 5 1/4, 5 3/4, 5 3/4, 5 3/4)", ending with a WS row.

SHAPE NECK: At beg of RS rows, BO 4 sts once, then BO 2 sts 6 (7, 8, 8, 9, 11) times—8 (10, 10, 12, 12, 14) sts rem. BO all sts.

Front

Return 68 (78, 84, 94, 100, 112) front sts to needle and, with WS facing, rejoin yarn. Purl 1 row.

Finishing

Sew shoulder seams.

NECK EDGING: With smaller needle and RS facing, beg at left shoulder seam, pick up and knit 18 sts along left neck edge, 20 (26, 30, 34, 36, 42) sts along center front neck, 18 sts along right neck edge and 13 (15, 17, 17, 19, 23) sts along right back neck, ending just before 4-st garter border, then overlapping last 4 sts of right back with first 4 sts of left back, pick up and knit 4 sts through both layers, then pick up and knit 13 (15, 17, 17, 19, 23) along left back neck—86 (96, 104, 108, 114, 128) sts total. Pm and join in the rnd. Purl 1 rnd. Knit 1 rnd. Purl 1 rnd. BO all sts.

ARMHOLE EDGING: With smaller needle and RS facing, beg at underarm, pick up and knit 78 (84, 91, 96, 101, 106) sts evenly around armhole edge. Pm and join in the rnd. Purl 1 rnd. Knit 1 rnd. Purl 1 rnd. BO all sts. Weave in ends and block to measurements.
