Knitted socks

THESE WHIMSICAL socks are definitely meant to be flaunted! Designed by Charles D. Gandy for yarn company Schachenmayr Regia, they use self-striping sock yarn and are sized for children and adults. They’re made by creating ‘holes’ as you work the sock; once the sock is completed, stitches are picked up around these holes and a tube is knitted on then rolled back, using small balls of solid colour wound off from the main ball of yarn. If you want to go really crazy, you can unroll the rings to make tentacle-like projections around your leg!

SIZE: Foot circumference: 15 (171/2:20:221/2:25) cm

NEEDLES & ACCESSORIES

Set 2.25mm (UK 13/US 1) double-pointed needles (DPNs)

TENSION

32 sts to 10cm over st st on 2.25mm needles

SOCK

LEG

Cast on 48 (56:64:72:80) sts.

Distribute sts onto DPNs as follows:

Needle 1: 12 (14:16:18:20) sts.

Needle 2: 24 (28:32:36:40) sts.

Needle 3: 12 (14:16:18:20) sts.

Join for working in the round, being careful not to twist the sts.

Knit 16 rounds, and begin working chart for size. All rnds/rows are shown. The holes are shaded grey; each hole is 4 sts wide and 5 rnds high.

Work st st panels in rows between the holes, then cont again in rnds to next hole rnd. Work each hole as foll:

1st hole rnd: start with 1 RS row and K to first hole. Cast off 4 for first hole, K to next hole, turn and work 4 rows st st just across these sts between the holes, start with P1 WS row and end with K1RS row. *Strand yarn across not too firmly just up to first st of next hole, cast off 4 for this hole, K to next hole, turn and working in 1 st st work 4 rows just across those sts between these holes, start with P1 WS row, and end with K1 RS row. Rep from *. After casting off for last hole of this rnd, work 4 rows st st across rem sts on needle 4 and across sts to first hole on needle 1. In foil rnd cast on 4 across each hole. Work 12 rnds st st, then work next holes as described.

Continue to work chart until complete. Piece should meas approx. 151/2 (181/2:21:231/2:25) cm from cast-on, ending with the last st on needle 2.
