Materials

★ 2 [2:3] x 50 g balls of Rowan Felted Tweed in Whisper 141

★ E4 (3.50 mm) and G6 (4.00 mm) crochet hooks

★ 3 buttons

Gauge

19 stitches and 12 1/2 rows to 4 in. (10 cm) measured over halt double crochet fabric using G6 (4.00 mm) hook.

Change hook size if necessary to obtain this gauge.

BACK AND FRONTS

(worked in one piece to armholes)

 With G6 (4.00 mm) hook, make 112 [124:136] ch.

Foundation row (RS): 1 hdc into 3rd ch from hook, 1 hdc into each ch to end, turn. 111 [123:135] sts.

Cont in hdc fabric as follows:-

1st row: 2 ch (counts as first hdc), 1 hdc into hdc at base of 2 ch, 1 hdc into each hdc to end, skipping 2 ch at beg of previous row, turn. 111 [123:135] sts.

This row forms hdc fabric.

Work in hdc fabric for 0 [0:2] rows, ending after a WS row.

For a girl

Next row (RS): Patt 2 sts, 1 ch, skip 1 hdc [to make a buttonhole - work 1 hdc into this ch sp on next row), patt to end.

For a boy

Next row (RS): Patt to last 3 sts, 1 ch, skip 1 hdc (to make a buttonhole - work 1 hdc into this ch sp on next row), patt 2 sts.

For a girl or a boy

SHAPE BACK NECK

Join shoulder seams.

MAIN EDGING

With RS facing and using E4 (3.50 mm) hook, attach yarn to foundation ch edge directly below one armhole, 1 ch (does NOT count as st), work 1 round of sc evenly around entire hem, front opening and neck edges, working 3 sc into corner points and ending with ss to first sc, do NOT turn.

Now work 1 round of crab st (sc worked from left to right, instead of right to left) around entire outer edge, ending with ss to first sc. Fasten off.

ARMHOLE EDGING

With RS facing and using E4 (3.50 mm) hook, attach yarn to base of armhole, 1 ch (does NOT count as st), work 1 round of sc evenly around armhole edge, ending with ss to first sc, do NOT turn. Now work 1 round of crab st (sc worked from left to right, instead of right to left) around armhole edge, ending with ss to first sc. Fasten off.

Sew on buttons.
